WATCH: pink suits – ‘A Comprehensive Breakdown of How Trickle-Down Economics Works’

Ahead of the release of their upcoming second album, Dystopian Hellscape, on 1st April, Margate duo pink suits have shared a compelling new single. The ambitiously titled ‘A Comprehensive Breakdown Of How Trickle-down Economics Works‘ promises to condense a volatile debate that economists have examined at great length into the (impressively, impossibly brief length) of a single track.

Trickle-down economics is the idea that it is beneficial to all of society to offer tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals and businesses in the world, allowing them to keep more money in their own accounts rather than the government re-distributing it to meet the needs of wider society. The logic behind this is that the hyper-rich will use that wealth of their own volition to stimulate the economy through their own purchases as well as developing businesses that provide jobs to working class people, as well as supporting social causes out of the goodness of their own hearts.

In a world where everyone has a fixed maximum capacity on the amount of money and assets they can have, this would make some element of sense, as they would be forced to redistribute those resources somehow anyway. However, in the real world, where the wealthy are not only allowed but actively encouraged, rewarded and honoured for hoarding more resources than they could ever possibly need, this simply isn’t the case. Studies conducted over many decades show that there is no correlation between more wealth and higher economic output and that the opposite is significantly more likely as the gap between rich and poor widens at increasingly alarming rates. When poor people have money, they have no choice but to spend it on the essentials that keep them alive and stimulate the economy. When rich people have money, they are free to let it gather dust indefinitely, rendering huge amounts of global resources with zero economic value.

In writing a song that is just four seconds long, pink Suits have refused to engage with arguments from ideologues who ignore basic facts of reality. They have refused to repeat easily accessible, readily available information. They have made a statement that if you’re not prepared to do your own homework, it’s not their job to educate you. If you want to look like a clown jabbering on about something you demonstrably know nothing about, then you are more than welcome to, but you are not entitled to their time or attention and you should consider yourself grateful that they dignified your argument with these four sweet, simple seconds.

Watch the epic accompanying video and read more about what pink suits have to say about the track below:

Video Premiere: pink suits – ‘Refuse The Rules’

If you’re at all familiar with pink suits, you’ll recognise their unique energy in every element of their new music video for ‘Refuse The Rules‘, the first taste we’ve had of their upcoming second album, Dystopian Hellscape. The whole video drips with their signature style and unapologetic passion.

The video takes place entirely within a two cubicle toilet, wallpapered with newspaper pages. The logos of The S*n and Metro (owned by The Daily Mail Group) leap out at you. An article about gender self-ID “fears” is placed right in the centre of the shot. Before the music even begins, you’re presented with instant commentary about the quality of contemporary journalism – rampant media bias and the painfully uncritical approach to publishing political agendas in the modern press.

‘Refuse The Rules’ is not a long or complicated song. It hones in on its point perfectly. Boiling down the tiresomely endless hours of identity debate into a concise song that barely breaks 100 seconds in length, it is short and sharp, instantly cementing pink suits as expert creators of today’s punk anthems.

With just the opening line – “Our existence doesn’t threaten your existence” – the song immediately highlights the most draining elements of the whole debate. It calls out the hypocrisy of anyone actively threatening another person over their identity, which wouldn’t have any impact at all on other people’s lives if they didn’t choose to stick their oar in. At a time when human lives are under threat every day from war / climate change / poverty / homelessness, even in the wealthiest countries on the planet, this track points out just how ridiculous it is to waste your energy being bigoted.

The delivery of every line is sharp and urgent, a scream that evokes all the pain, frustration and fear underlying the song’s message, roared over a foundation of aggressive drums and shrieking guitar riffs. The track is packed with earworms that capture the rage effortlessly.

Despite the darkness that necessitates this kind of commentary, ‘Refuse The Rules’ is ultimately uplifting in its defiance – “We refuse the rules. We refuse to bow.” It’s a rejection of conformity and of the hypocrisy of those who manage to conveniently ignore all the real problems in this dystopian hellscape of the modern world to take issue with another human being’s self expression. It’s a riotous call to action for anyone who needs a little extra motivation to embrace their true selves.

Completely created by pink suits themselves, this new video captures the raging energy of ‘Refuse The Rules’ perfectly. Watch, for the first time, here:

Produced by Halo Halo studio in Margate, ‘Refuse The Rules’ is out now, ahead of pink suits’ second album – Dystopian Hellscape – which is set for release in Spring 2024. But keep you ears and eyes peeled for more teasers in the meantime!

Get In Her Ears Live at The Shacklewell Arms w/ The Menstrual Cramps, 06.05.2022

On Friday, we were back at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston with the most epic of line-ups. The Menstrual Cramps, pink suits and Queen Cult treated us to an immense few hours of live music. Huge thanks to them all, and to all the lovely folk who came out to support them and fill the venue… We’re still feeling all the feels, and are extremely grateful to everyone who made it such a beautiful night.

First up, Cheshire up and coming band Queen Cult kick things off with a wonderfully entertaining set. With a swirling infectious energy and quirky charisma, they immerse us in their fiercely impassioned offerings raging against the patriarchy; cementing themselves firmly as definite ones to watch on the new music scene.

Next up, Margate based pink suits deliver an immense and truly poignant set. From the wonderfully witty ‘Are You Gay Yet?’ to the all-too-resonant seething splendour of politcally-charged anthems such as ‘Fake Great Britain’ and ‘Anarchist Wisdom’, the incredible duo just seem to magnificently capture the burning anger, frustration and sadness that so many of us are feeling right now, whist bringing us together with an empowering sense of unity.

Headlining the night, we’re extremely honoured to have Bristol’s The Menstrual Cramps deliver their first London gig in over two and a half years. Covering topics ranging from political unrest and violence against women to more celebratory anthems in favour of pleasuring ourselves, the band’s shiny new line-up blast out raging offerings new and old with a ferocious energy and joyous, chaotic force. With their immense, impassioned drive and utterly necessary message of coming together against the right wing hellscape that this country is becoming, they simultaneously unite the crowd in a cathartic explosion of angst-driven power and elated euphoria. Shouting along to ‘Cull The Tories’ has never felt more urgent.

Huge love and thanks again to all three bands who played for us on Friday, and to everyone who came out to share the music and good vibes. We’re returning to The Victoria on 24th June with Slagheap, Nervous Twitch and The Famous Daxx – get your tickets on DICE now!
