Track Of The Day: Sit Down – ‘Mothership’

Inspired by their love of sci-fi & Route 66: Brighton-based duo Sit Down have shared a video for their single ‘Mothership’. Filmed entirely on VHS by the band during an American road-trip, the visuals show the pair frequenting highways and diners as their thunderous single plays on in the background.

The video has been released alongside the the exciting announcement that they will play Reading and Leeds Festivals this year for BBC Introducing. Taken from their recent debut EP Cheap Luxe, ‘Mothership’ is a blur of aliens and autonomy, as drumming front woman Katie Oldham explains: “There’s an undeniably feminist message behind it, like there is with the majority of our songs. It’s mostly about growing into womanhood, but also just loving the idea of this huge all-powerful alien queen invading earth to save us from horrible men.”

The band are keen to keep things DIY too, as Guitarist Greg Burns adds: “The decision to film ‘Mothership’ on VHS was not just purely for the aesthetic, it also embodies exactly what we stand for with Cheap Luxe, the namesake of our EP. To us, Cheap Luxe is embracing the crude, ramshackle reality of life in a world so obsessed with projecting perfection. It’s about this real, gritty rawness that’s so much more fun than taking yourself seriously. Doing everything DIY is important to us, and there was something so magic about working so hard to go on this once in a lifetime adventure and film this thing, which we could only then afford to do on an old camcorder we got for a few quid at a car boot sale. It’s perfect.”

Track Of The Day: Ghum – ‘I’m The Storm’

After wowing us on numerous occasions with their immersive live performance (most recently at Indietracks Festival), and following last single ‘TV’, GIHE faves Ghum are back with brand new video for bewitching new single ‘I’m The Storm’.

Building the tension with throbbing bass-lines and whirring Cure-reminiscent hooks as the magnetising charisma of Laura Guerrero Lora’s vocals soar, ‘I’m The Storm’ oozes a swirling captivating haze. With their immersive gothic energy, the band’s sparkling haunting sounds float into the ears with a majestic grace, sending shivers down the spine. Once again, Ghum’s sweeping dark-pop proves they’re a band who deserve to be heard.

Of the track, guitarist Jojo Khor explains:

“‘I’m The Storm’ speaks about the difficulties of being in a relationship and not being able to give what your partner wants. It talks about the silent internal suffering you experience before breaking up with someone, the calm before the storm.”

Get In Her Ears Live @ The Finsbury w/ Thunder On The Left, 10.08.18

Following a host of super amazing bands playing for us recently – including LIINES, Witch Fever, The Magnettes, H.Grimace, The Menstrual Cramps and The Empty Page  – we were back at The Finsbury on Friday for another jam-packed night of the best new music.

Immediately blowing us away, recent favourites Scrounge deliver their intense and utterly captivating sounds to kick off the night. As front woman Lucy’s immense vocals rage alongside whirring, scuzzy hooks and Luke’s thrashing beats, they continue to prove themselves to be one of the most exciting bands around.

 

Next up, Leeds’ Nervous Twitch uplift and inspire with their vibrant and energy-fuelled punk-pop offerings. With a colourful wit and sunny sparkle, it’s impossible not to be left feeling a joyous sense of empowerment at their instantly catchy creations.

Penultimate band of the night, Brighton’s ARXX, blast into our ears and dazzle our ears with all the seething, glitter-filled energy you could ever ask for. With the immense of power Hannah’s gritty vocals and raging riffs alongside Clara’s high-octane thrashing beats, their mighty grunge-fuelled offerings take our breath away once again.

Finally, headliners Thunder On The Left deliver a memorable, angst-driven set. Bounding across the stage with a riotous energy, front woman Carla blasts out a torrent of blazing vocals as frenzied hooks race alongside pummelling beats. A perfect outpouring of fiery emotion and refreshing honesty, the trio leave us ready – fists clenched – to take on anything with their infectious, ferocious power.

HUGE thanks to the four incredible bands who played for us on Friday, it was a dream of a night. And we’re already getting excited about next month’s gig on 14th September with Wendy Rae Fowler headlining!

Track Of The Day: SEX CELLS – ‘Hell Is Where The Heart Is’

Dystopian visuals and moody synths permeate SEX CELLS debut single ‘Hell Is Where The Heart Is’. Described as “a mixture of Suicide, Psychic TV, and Art House sensibilities” SEX CELLS – aka Matt Kilda and Willow Vincent – fuse visual art and vicarious noise to create challenging new sounds.

The London-based synth duo will release ‘Hell Is Where The Heart Is’ as a double A-Side release, which will be available digitally & on limited edition 7″ vinyl on their own label, Pretty Ugly Records. Under the guidance of Raf.E and produced by Dave M. Allen (The Cure, Yassassin), the two songs will be accompanied by a series of surrealist artworks made by the band.

Formed in down-and-out circumstances, SEX CELLS were originally hobbyist promoters who ran monthly nights of live music and visual projections for experimental noise acts. After being ripped off in a house rental scam, the duo turned their anger in to music in a Peckham rehearsal room, documenting their desperation with a synth and house drum kit.

Since then, SEX CELLS have shared stages with bands such as Meatraffle, Madonnatron, The Rhythm Method, and HMLTD. They’ll be back on stage tonight (Aug 9th) at The Finsbury supporting noise-pop merchants TAYNE (Free gig: event details here).
