WATCH: HIDE – ‘Raw Dream’

Brutal beats, abrasive synths and cutting vocals infiltrate HIDE‘s latest single ‘Raw Dream’, taken from their upcoming album Hell is Here, which is set for release on 23rd August via Dais Records.

Based in Chicago, HIDE are comprised of fine artist Gabel and percussionist Seth Sher. They describe their new single as “an anthem for the rise of the disenfranchised – a long overdue and joyous recalibration of an imbalance of power”. The track is accompanied by a video shot by Eon Mora, and edited by Christopher Michael Hefner and the band.

HIDE are renowned for their electric live performances, and dedication to channeling the voices of those who have been downtrodden, abused, or ignored. Their 2016 EP Black Flame was dedicated to the memory of Reyhana Jabbari – a 27 year old Iranian woman who was hung for allegedly killing someone who tried to rape her. Their 2017 debut album Castration Anxiety addresses issues of power dynamics and representation. Now, with ‘Raw Dream’ and their upcoming second album, the pair continue to transform vulnerability in to more powerful, distracting industrial tunes.

Track Of The Day: Palm Haze – ‘Floating’

Hazy, reverb-heavy guitars and drifting vocals permeate ‘Floating’, the new single from Vancouver-via-Brazil shoegaze duo Palm Haze. The track is taken from their upcoming album Rêve Bleu, which is set for release on 30th August via YHS Records.

Whilst Anna Wagner (vocals/bass) and Lucas Inacio’s (guitar/producer) music is clearly influenced by the likes of My Bloody Valentine, the duo also blend elements of alt-rock and trip-hop to create their luscious, swirling soundscapes. Their 2017 EP Tangy Dream was rated as DKFM’s third best shoegaze album, and their new record looks set to be a hit with fans and critics alike.

The band describe Rêve Bleu as “another story told by the unconscious”, and singles ‘Almost Soon’ and ‘Floating’ have already tapped in to the beauty in Palm Haze’s chaotic hive mind. Lucas explains further: “While Tangy Dream feels very tangible and achievable, Rêve Bleu will bring up chaotic emotions and thoughts, taking you much further from reality and closer to the wonders of uncertainty. Where could you go? What could you do? It’s a fantasy you fall on accidentally, revealing risky and forbidden paths. It’s the kind of dream you’re afraid of, but also tempted towards.”

Track Of The Day: Foxgluvv – ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’

A sparkling, sultry tune inspired by the 1985 film of the same name: fabulous “hungover-pop” artist Foxgluvv has shared her latest single ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’. It’s the first song to be released from her upcoming debut EP I Never Felt Hollywood, which is set to be released later this year.

As a DIY artist who champions queer music, it’s no surprise that Foxgluvv self-directed the accompanying video to ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’. Speaking about her new track, Foxgluvv explains: “[It] represents the love and admiration I so desperately wanted growing up, as most teenagers can relate to. Being queer, I never saw my ideal relationship portrayed on TV or in films. I was left with a sense of longing and intrigue towards my sexuality and I found myself questioning whether or not I would ever be in a happy, fulfilling relationship. I wanted to write a song that managed to grasp those feelings of uncertainty underneath, whilst masquerading as a typical love song on the first listen”.

Along with Producer Scott Colcombe, Foxgluvv crafts lo-fi, but sensational electronic pop tunes that are memorable for their catchy beats and their emotional content. ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ is another example of her natural ability to create intriguing and entertaining music that navigates the difficulty of queer relationships, and her longing for love whilst coming to terms with her true identity.
