WATCH: Hatchie – ‘Stay With Me’

“I’m a sucker for crying-in-the-club tracks” says Australia’s Hatchie – and we’re happy to sob under the strobe lights to her catchy new single ‘Stay With Me’. The electronic-pop gem is taken from her highly anticipated debut album Keepsake, which is set for release on June 21st via Heavenly.

Hatchie (aka Harriette Pilbeam) explains how ‘Stay With Me’ came to be: “[The song] was written as a writing exercise in an effort to step away from my usual style into something more fun and dancey. We originally wrote it with someone else in mind, but realized it was the perfect fit for my album as I wanted to expand into a different sound. It became one of my favourite songs on the record”.

On her upcoming album, Hatchie has blended and explored new textures – from industrial to new wave to dance-pop. Despite not being a sentimental person, Hatchie says the record is “a keepsake in itself” – an aural memory of moments and experiences translated with her shining, upbeat energy.

LISTEN: Hockeysmith – ‘Never Knowing’

Self described as “Kylie on acid”, Cornish electronic Producer Hockeysmith has shared her new track ‘Never Knowning’ taken from compilation album EEL.COMP1. Released via new label EEL – which was set up by Annie Hockeysmith (Hockeysmith) & Lukasz Kucharski (omoo) – the collection is designed to celebrate artists connected to the new Cornish underground scene, and is set for release on 18th April.

Following on from the release of her EP Tears At My Age earlier this year via Ex-Local, Hockeysmith is now turning her attention firmly to the talent in her hometown. EEL intends to broaden the scope of listeners to the Falmouth electronic music scene through their independent label that lays homageto the history of Cornwall’s rave scene, and the likes of Aphex Twin, John Peel and Luke Vibert.

EEL recordings takes its name firstly from Earth, from Cornwall. The second ‘E’ stands for eel, for the eely, slimy, grimy electronic music. The ‘L’ is for Loop, the repetitive cylinder of sounds and for the loopy musicians soon to be on the label. It’s an exciting new venture, and one we’re sure will be prosperous for Hockeysmith and her talented friends.

Track Of The Day: Grizzly Coast – ‘Half-Light Boy’

“Will you shine for them, like I shined for you?” asks Grizzly Coast on her bitter sweet new single ‘Half-Light Boy’. The track is a “sobering realization that not every person you encounter will have the same heart as you”.

It’s not all doom and gloom though! Grizzly Coasts’ buoyant guitar and gentle yet sturdy vocals are a reminder that “someone else’s lack of care for you is often due to something lacking in them – it is never an expression of what you deserve”.

Written when she was walking home from a grocery store as a compromise for a confrontation she knew she would never bother to actually have, the story behind ‘Half-Light Boy’ will resonate with anyone who’s felt like like they’re shining the spotlight on someone else, whilst simultaneously living in their shadow.

LISTEN: Grace Lightman – ‘Zero Impact’

A careful yet catchy electronic curation; London-based electronic pop artist Grace Lightman explores what it’s like to have ‘Zero Impact’ on her new single, out now on Handsome Dad Records.

Describing her own sound as “one part ABBA, two parts Twin Peaks” through her gentle vocals and mixture of poppy and gritty synth textures, Lightman has created an electronic pop gem. She collaborated on the new single with longtime mentor and co-writer, Patrick J Pearson as well as Ben Baptie (previously mixed & engineered; Moses Sumney, Young Fathers, Puma Blue, Lady Gaga) who produced the single.

Speaking about ‘Zero Impact’, Lightman explains: “[the song] is about trying to exist in the world without disturbing those around you, almost like an apparition. Treading on eggshells while essentially trying to fit seamlessly into humanity. Just thought I would present that musically in a more attention seeking way.”
