Track Of The Day: 45ACIDBABIES – ‘Mommy’s Favourite 1’

Following the success of last year’s ‘3 (Walk With Me)’, and having shared a stage with the likes of Sleigh Bells and Blood Red Shoes, Dutch garage punks 45ACIDBABIES have now returned with a buoyant new single.

Propelled by a vibrant, playful energy, ‘Mommy’s Favourite 1′ races with swirling layers of sound creating an instantly infectious, danceable cacophony. As scuzzy, electro-driven hooks race alongside the soaring sultry power of Sophia De Geus’ vocals, a psychedelic haze ripples, creating an anthemic slice of indie-pop reminiscent of the likes of PINS. Futuristic, yet with hints of ’80s-infused nostalgia, it’s an uplifting sonic fusion, injecting a much needed colourful groove into our ears. Of the track, the band explain:

“… (it’s) about an Odysee sirene island like situation that refers to the situation we’re all in right now. The COVID-19 life we’re living. It’s sang by ‘the mother’ who kidnaps lost people in the streets and takes them home to submerge them into a hypnotising party that will make you feel like you’ve escaped the real depressing life for a moment. Everything seems all fun and games. The perfect night. But then you find out you can never leave.”

Mommy’s Favourite 1‘ is out now.

Track Of The Day: deep tan – ‘camelot’

Following the bewitching sounds of last year’s poignant ‘deep fake’ and with acclaim from the likes of So Young, NME, The Quietus and BBC 6Music, Hackney-based trio deep tan have now announced the release of their debut EP.

Taken from the EP, the band have now shared new single ‘camelot’. Propelled by the majestic whirr of sparse hooks and throbbing beats, it builds with a quirky hypnotic splendour and fizzing tension, with shades of the playful jangle-fuzz of the likes of Stereo Total. Conjuring memories of heavy nights out in dingy music venues that we’re all missing so much right now, as swooning vocals glide across the angular soundscape, ‘camelot’ creates an eerily infectious offering; another truly captivating sonic cacophony from the post-punk trio that will leave you longing for more of their exquisite stirring allure.

Of the track, the band explain:

‘camelot’ is an unashamed tribute to ‘the sesh’. a group of people have just been evicted with only 48hrs notice, leading them to have one last rager in order to forget about the stress of not finding a new home with such short notice. coming in at less than two minutes, the frenetic energy of the track sets the scene for total obliteration…

‘camelot’ is accompanied by a home-made video – a ‘visualisation of 21st June’ featuring footage from parties, weddings and raves. Watch now!

‘camelot’ is out now, listen on Spotify. And deep tan’s debut EP, creeping speedwells, is set for release on 4th June.

Track Of The Day: Gemma Cullingford – ‘Wide Boys’

Known as one half of GIHE faves Sink Ya Teeth, musician and songwriter Gemma Cullingford has now shared the video for her first solo single. Ahead of the release of a debut album this summer, during the band’s downtime throughout the pandemic Gemma has been working on creations of a more personal nature, and it’s just what our ears need right now.

Propelled by throbbing tribal beats and infectious bass, ‘Wide Boys’ reflects on the need for us to wake up and take back control from those in power. Driven by a racing energy and interweaving immense hooks, including a fiercely flowing flute solo, it’s an instantly catchy, funk-fuelled slice of electro-tinged disco pop. Retaining some of the danceable groove that we’ve come to know and love from Sink Ya Teeth, ‘Wide Boys’ maintains its own unique majestic musicality and sweeping empowering zest. Stirring in sentiment, yet uplifting in sound, Gemma Cullingford has created a colourful call to arms for these desperate times. Of the track, Gemma explains:

It’s a message to the average man and woman on the street, many of whom it seems have been brainwashed by both those in power and by the far right. It’s saying that every single one of us are being controlled as part of a big, sinister game. This is a response to my own awakening to that…

Combining colourful, retro-tinged footage of the forces we need to fight against with Gemma performing the track, watch the poignant new video for ‘Wide Boys’ now:

‘Wide Boys’, alongside double A-side ‘104’, is out on 5th March via Outré. Both tracks will be available digitally and 7″. Gemma Cullingford’s debut solo album Let Me Speak is set for release this summer.
