Track Of The Day: Chromatics – ‘Blue Girl’

Renowned for their sultry synth-pop tunes and sharply produced sounds, Chromatics have released hazy new track ‘Blue Girl’ in to our midst, and it’s as dreamy and delicate as its title.

The track is taken from the band’s upcoming album Dear Tommy, which will be released in Autumn 2018. Directed by Chromatics themselves, the accompanying video for ‘Blue Girl’ is as cool and distant as the track’s opening lyrics: “Blue girl / Don’t hate the world / Your friends will never understand”.

LIVE: Indian Queens – Meltdown Festival 2018, London 15.06.18

After watching Hackney trio Indian Queens perform to a packed out Purcell Room at The Southbank Centre last night, we have only one ambition: to become as skilled a guitarist as Jennifer O’Neill. The band were hand-picked by The Cure’s Robert Smith to play his exceptionally well curated 2018 Meltdown Festival, and after their mesmeric, sharply executed performance, it’s easy to see why.

Together, vocalist & guitarist Jennifer, bassist Katherine and drummer Matt create thoughtful, atmospheric sounds reminiscent of bands like Warpaint and Radiohead. Performing against a backdrop of kaleidoscopic visuals – which were a fusion of live footage and urban buildings – Indian Queens played a captivating set, featuring brand new single ‘Pretty Little Thing’, released via Cool Thing Records on the day of the show.

Bare-foot bassist Katherine was animated throughout, delivering her moody bass lines with stylish aplomb, whilst drummer Matt was the driving force behind it all – even after he dropped a stick, he recovered the rhythm seamlessly. Jennifer’s vocals were as magnetic as her guitar riffs, effortlessly anchoring the performance of singles ‘Save Yourself’ and ‘Get No Rest’. She confessed mid-way through that the band had accidentally left their set-lists in the dressing room, but the trio moved from song to song with such ease and precision, this oversight was barely noticeable. Their set closed with a standing ovation, which was unsurprising, but entirely deserved.

They were the secret openers for our March gig at The Finsbury earlier this year, and b) buy a ticket to their headline show at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen in October here. They’re a must-see for those who appreciate hypnotic, alternative guitar tunes.

Track Of The Day: EVVOL – ‘Release Me’

Electronic duo Evvol have teamed up with fellow Berlin-based, American filmmaker Matt Lambert to create erotic visuals for their new single ‘Release Me’. The video tackles the under-representation of queer females in mainstream media and censorship of female bodies, providing a docu-style insight into the lives of a group of queer women in Berlin.

“Queer women should be equally as strong and loud as gay boys,” says Director Matt. “They should be powerful in their sexuality and not hidden in the way some people perceive queer women to be.” “Exactly”, agrees co-director Julie Chance (Evvol). “On a personal level, my main problem with different types of media is I don’t see people like myself represented on screen, and I think it’s really important to address this.”

‘Release Me’ was shared as a double single with second track ‘Oceania’ via !K7 Records at the beginning of June. It follows the pair’s critically acclaimed debut album Eternalism (2015), and their 2016 EP release, Physical L.U.V. Like many artist’s today, Evvol spent most of their time post-2016 feeling “overwhelmed by the social upheaval in the world,” so they embarked on other creative endeavours, before returning with a fresh perspective and four new songs.

“These songs were written looking inwardly at how we cope when faced with challenges,” say the band. ‘Release Me’ and ‘Oceania’ will be closely followed by ‘Song for the Broken Hearted (Rollin’)’ and ‘New Old’, and we’re excited to hear more of their arty electronica.

PREMIERE: La Lune – ‘Love/Sick’

Brighton song-writer La Lune has released her ear-melting new single ‘Love/Sick’, which you can listen to below. We’ve been keeping track of this elusive newcomer since she shared her debut EP Bliss with us in February, and her latest offering is equally as dreamy.

La Lune’s material is mainly autobiographical, but on ‘Love/Sick’ she approached songwriting from a different angle. “I was giving a friend of mine some advice, as they were having relationship-troubles,” La Lune explains. “They said to me, ‘we’ve got a lot to undo’ and that phrase really stuck with me and inspired the chorus of the song (we often joke that I should give them lyric credits). I think ‘Love/Sick’ sounds a bit different to what I’ve released before, which was my intention. I wanted the subject matter to be kind of sad, but to juxtapose this with a relatively upbeat song. I really like it when songs do that.”

Inspired by the likes of The Japanese House, Lorde, James Blake & Bon Iver, La Lune has been creating her own music for just over a year. ‘Love/Sick’ marks a more “summery” direction for the songwriter, but her sharp production skills ensure she’s still creating her trademark understated, cleanly produced sounds.
