WATCH: Petrol Girls – ‘Survivor’

Inspired by the growing movement against sexual violence, PETROL GIRLS have shared their riotous new single ‘Survivor’. It’s another much-needed anthem from a band who are dedicated to shouting back against the damage of patriarchal oppression.

Produced by the band’s vocalist Ren Aldridge, the accompanying video for ‘Survivor’ is a collaboration between Andrew Northrop and painter Mariah Pearl. Ren explains: “The way that Mariah’s paintings play with the surface of the canvas gives me a really strong feeling of a clandestine power that refuses to be captured or identified. For me, this reflects whisper networks and the erupting movement against sexual violence. It’s like the tree roots that push up through the tarmac.”

Ren and her band mates’ passion for social justice has led to PETROL GIRLS being signed to UK-based independent label Hassle Records, and the band will head off on tour this month to share new track ‘Survivor’ with their fans.

WATCH: HOST – ‘Goodbye’

After spending the past year writing, recording and producing music alone, Irish artist HOST has shared her debut single ‘Goodbye’. It’s a song about “putting your heart and soul into a shit relationship that inevitably falls apart,” which is something most of us unfortunate souls have endured.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, HOST’s electronic pop hooks make ‘Goodbye’ a charming, up-tempo listen. The accompanying video is a mash of glitter, wine and raw emotion which you can re-enact in your bedroom any time you need to shrug off the feelings of inadequacy left by a lover who doesn’t deserve you.

Track Of The Day: Hilary Woods – ‘Inhaler’

A pensive, delicate track about her struggles with homesickness, Dublin-based musician & performance artist Hilary Woods has shared her new single ‘Inhaler’. The track is taken from her upcoming debut solo album Colt, which is set for release via Sacred Bones Records on 8th June.

“‘Inhaler’ is a response to a relenting absence that was constantly present,” Woods explains about her new single. “It’s a song about homesickness, longing; an attempt to find new ways of being in the wake of separation.” She explores these emotions through electronic and classical sounds, with her tentative, mysterious vocals floating calmly above these elements.

Woods directed the accompanying music video for ‘Inhaler’ herself, working alongside cinematographer and long-time collaborator Joshua Wright and dancer/choreographer Justine Cooper. With her multi-talented approach to creating art and extensive musical experience (including playing as a member of JJ72), Hilary Woods should definitely be on your musical radar.

LISTEN: Evil Bone – ‘In Vain’

‘In Vain’ is the debut single from elusive newcomer Evil Bone, and it’s a blur of hushed lyrics and hazy reverb that’ll ease your anxious mind. The track premiered on Louder Than War earlier this week and is now available to stream on Spotify.

Evil Bone combines instrumentation and vocals – inspired by modern psych-guitar music, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Tame Impala & Anderson Paak – “to marry the colourful sounds and soulful vibes that these styles of music respectfully portray.” But it’s not just about forming these dreamy soundscapes, Evil Bone’s words are of equal importance.

Speaking about ‘In Vain’, Evil Bone explains:

“In order for me to convey what I want people to take from this record, my choice of words are of high importance to me. Music alone has the ability evoke feeling, but to truly paint the picture O wanted to, I’ve chosen topics that are close to my heart. For this particularly piece, the topic is anxiety, something that I have struggled with for many years, something that has burdened my soul and held me back from being completely who I would like to be.

Anxiety disorder can take over your day to day life, by your side at all times. It holds you hostage – you begin to wonder what life is like on the outside. Wouldn’t it be great to be free!? …or would it? Maybe this is it now. Like a former lover that won’t leave you be, sometimes you get sucked back in before you even realise it. It makes your head spin, but maybe that’s not entirely a bad thing? your own warped view of the world. More often than not, however, it is both mentally and physically crippling, and though you may try to fight it, your efforts to extinguish these feelings are often in vain.”
