Track Of The Day: Anteros – ‘Bonnie’

A staple of their live set from their very first shows, ‘Bonnie’ has proven to be an instant crowd-pleaser among Anteros’ loyal following. The track is a call to arms for women and girls, asking them to stop competing against each other and unite in the face of adversity and intense media scrutiny.

“We wrote ‘Bonnie’ about the pressures of being a girl in a world of people who never seem to be happy with what they have,” explains Anteros’ frontwoman Laura Hayden. “It’s time to break away from that, to love and accept ourselves. To stop comparing ourselves to each other and work together. ‘Bonnie’ is our tribute to girls.” Produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman, Bloc Party), the band’s new track is a polished, defiant effort to unite the girls that Laura speaks about.

Track Of The Day: Indian Queens – ‘I Get No Rest’

If you’re looking for the soundtrack to a “late dark night in London”, then Hackney trio Indian Queens‘ latest single ‘I Get No Rest’ is the perfect choice. Written during the midst of a massive political shift (Brexit, the general election) and in the wake of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire, it’s the band’s response to the inescapable feeling that – as vocalist & guitarist Jennifer O’Neill put its – “rich ‘important’ people were taking the piss out most of our lives.”

You’ll be hooked on Jennifer’s clear, strong vocals which dominate the track and chanting the standout lyric “Free, as long as you obey” in unison with her. The song’s steady percussion and moody bass lines create a seductively jaded atmosphere, proving Indian Queens have the potential to produce original, ominous and meaningful sounds.

The band will be playing a headline show at St Pancras Old Church on November 29th (event details here) so make sure you grab a ticket and head down to see them live.

ALBUM: REWS – ‘Pyro’

Like the phoenix that rises from the ashes of its own flames, rock duo REWS take the remnants of loves old and new and turn them into tunes that blaze with fun and furious style. Their debut album Pyro, released via Marshall Records, brims with an incredibly dark an delightful energy and it’s setting our cells alight in all the right ways.

The record opens with a rockier reversion of the joyful ‘Let It Roll’, showcasing guitarist Shauna & drummer Collette’s divine dual vocals against a backdrop if gritty guitar. It bleeds perfectly in to ‘Rip Up My Heart’, a heavy lament to the heartache caused by a failed relationship – and a musical remedy for it too.

‘Violins’ is an apathetic but energetic track with a chorus which demonstrates Shauna’s ability to hit the higher notes as well as unleashing hair-raising screams with her powerful lungs. It precedes recent single ‘Shine’, which is glittery and gloriously heavy (like the accompanying music video) and a clear highlight on the record. ‘Death Yawn’ – written about a weird guy who kept staring at Shauna at a hostel during breakfast – is a poppier offering, but it’s drenched in REWS’ trademark infectious melodies and dancing beats.

‘Miss You In The Dark’ is the anthem every girl should listen to post-breakup, with standout percussion from Collette and more of Shauna’s powerhouse vocals which dominate the record. ‘Your Tears’ is a superb follow-up, and it’s a track that refuses to acknowledge “the boy who cried wolf” with it’s swaggering guitar and thrashing drums.

‘We Explode’ leaves its mark, with it’s scorching chorus and lyrics that drip with desire, whilst penultimate track ‘Shake Shake’ will have you shimmying away the bad memories. ‘Running Up Against The Wall’ closes the record, with melodic keys and a sense of uncertainty that listeners will easily relate to. Pyro is proof that the REWS girls take everything in their stride, and they should take great pride in this record which perfectly showcases their musical potential.

Track Of The Day: Ms Mohammed – ‘Alibi’

Ms Mohammed (aka Dana Jade) is not one to suffer fools gladly. As both a musician and an activist, she confronts xenophobia and Islamophobia head-on to challenge pre-conceptions about race, gender and sexuality. Born in Trinidad and of South Asian descent, her guitar-wielding persona is equal parts exotic Goddess and entrancing vampire.

Her new track ‘Alibi’, taken from her recent EP of the same name, is full of thumping, exotic dhol drums, surrounded by fuzzy, bluesy guitars, all of which lead the listener down velvet and gold-lined corridors to Ms. Mohammed’s lair – a prospect which is simultaneously thrilling and terrifying.

As a champion of religious and cultural tolerance and supporter of LGBT rights, Ms Mohammed is challenging prejudice through her music – and we are 100% behind her endeavours to promote tolerance, acceptance and freedom of expression.

Follow Ms Mohammed on Facebook, and join the Clitrock movement on Twitter too.
