Get In Her Ears Live @ The Finsbury w/ Peach Club, 12.10.18

Following a host of super amazing bands playing for us recently – including Wendy Rae Fowler, Witch Fever, The Magnettes, The Empty Page, The Menstrual Cramps and Thunder On The Left  – we were back at The Finsbury on Friday for another jam-packed night of the best new music, and to celebrate exactly two years of hosting gigs at the venue!

Kicking off the celebrations is the brooding grunge-infused power of Concrete Bones. Alongside luscious sweeping vocals, they deliver fuzzy reverb-strewn riffs and pummelling beats, oozing a dark, gritty power, and marking themselves out as definite ones to watch.

Next up, The Muffinheads take to the stage, instantly blasting out their immense, raging force. Having really honed their sound since first playing for us in March last year, the Essex band ooze their ferocious, fiery energy as frenzied riffs and tremendous beats race alongside the seething growl of front-woman Bex. And, with Bex even coming off stage to have a little dance with next band Pussyliquor, it’s a totally engrossing head-banger of a set.

Penultimate band of the night, Pussyliquor, bring their pure, uncensored female rage with a wild, punk-fuelled passion. Immediately filling the venue with the heaving bodies of an army of moshing fans, their intense riotous power, tongue-in-cheek wit and empowering messages of equality are delivered with a fierce energy and searing, colossal force.

Norwich band Peach Club close the night with a total dream of a headline set. With a raw ferocity, thrashing hooks and driving beats, they channel their anger at the patriarchy into a wonderful outpouring of raucous energy, and spot-on, exceptionally poignant lyrics. Telling us the story behind each of the tracks (from the disgusting ‘boys in bands’ who take advantage of young girls, to the patronising way they – as females in a band – are treated by men in the industry), vocalist Katie’s raw, impassioned power brings to mind the engaging spirit of Riot Grrrl pioneer Kathleen Hanna, as the band’s seething force and racing sense of urgency are just the motivation we need to speak out and be heard at a time when we need to more than ever.

HUGE thanks to the four wonderful bands who played for us on Friday! As it’s our birthday month, we actually have another gig on 26th October at The Five Bells with Cryptic Street headlining, and our next gig at The Finsbury is 9th November with Brighton duo Sit Down. See you there!

Get In Her Ears Live @ The Finsbury w/ Wendy Rae Fowler, 14.09.18

Following a host of super amazing bands playing for us recently – including LIINES, Witch Fever, The Magnettes, H.Grimace, The Menstrual Cramps and Thunder On The Left  – we were back at The Finsbury on Friday for another jam-packed night of the best new music.

Kicking things off, the absolutely stunning Caswell returns to play for us – full band in tow – after captivating us all last year. As her silky smooth, luscious vocals soar alongside deep pulsating beats and twinkling soundscapes, she charms the crowd with the uplifting, sparkling splendour of her catchy creations.

Next up, utterly immense duo Belle Scar take to the stage. Delivering her sweeping, majestic offerings, Geeta casts her spell over us all an instant. As the intense power of her spectacular vocals ooze a beguiling grandeur alongside innovative, mind blowing hooks, she shimmers and shines with a unique grace.

Penultimate band of the night, the many members of After London, treat the jam-packed venue to their anthemic alt-rock with an infectious, uninhibited energy. As front woman Francesca’s gritty, soulful vocals cascade over swirling riffs, the band draw us all into their high-octane creations, cementing themselves as definite ones to watch.

Finally, Wendy Rae Fowler and her band (including GIHE fave Jemma Freeman) take to the stage, immediately capturing our attention with a completely immersive presence and innovative soundscape. As Fowler’s deep, resonant vocals soar with a spellbinding power, whirring hooks and tribal beats create a captivating, cinematic atmosphere, filling the room with a sense of wonder; a soul-grabbing, breath-taking set that I’m truly honoured to have hosted.

Massive thanks to all the artist who played for us on Friday – it really was an amazing night of live music, and we’re so grateful to have you all play for us!

Get In Her Ears Live @ The Finsbury w/ Thunder On The Left, 10.08.18

Following a host of super amazing bands playing for us recently – including LIINES, Witch Fever, The Magnettes, H.Grimace, The Menstrual Cramps and The Empty Page  – we were back at The Finsbury on Friday for another jam-packed night of the best new music.

Immediately blowing us away, recent favourites Scrounge deliver their intense and utterly captivating sounds to kick off the night. As front woman Lucy’s immense vocals rage alongside whirring, scuzzy hooks and Luke’s thrashing beats, they continue to prove themselves to be one of the most exciting bands around.

 

Next up, Leeds’ Nervous Twitch uplift and inspire with their vibrant and energy-fuelled punk-pop offerings. With a colourful wit and sunny sparkle, it’s impossible not to be left feeling a joyous sense of empowerment at their instantly catchy creations.

Penultimate band of the night, Brighton’s ARXX, blast into our ears and dazzle our ears with all the seething, glitter-filled energy you could ever ask for. With the immense of power Hannah’s gritty vocals and raging riffs alongside Clara’s high-octane thrashing beats, their mighty grunge-fuelled offerings take our breath away once again.

Finally, headliners Thunder On The Left deliver a memorable, angst-driven set. Bounding across the stage with a riotous energy, front woman Carla blasts out a torrent of blazing vocals as frenzied hooks race alongside pummelling beats. A perfect outpouring of fiery emotion and refreshing honesty, the trio leave us ready – fists clenched – to take on anything with their infectious, ferocious power.

HUGE thanks to the four incredible bands who played for us on Friday, it was a dream of a night. And we’re already getting excited about next month’s gig on 14th September with Wendy Rae Fowler headlining!

Get In Her Ears Live @ Notting Hill Arts Club w/ Black Gold Buffalo 01.08.18

Whilst we love the Riot Grrrl inspired line-ups we curate for our monthly residency at The Finsbury Pub, we wanted to find a platform to promote some of our favourite artists who incorporate electronics into their performances too. For our debut gig at West London’s Notting Hill Arts Club, we chose Black Gold Buffalo to headline, with support from the beautiful AyOwA and Bamboo Smoke.

The task of opening events fell to South Londoners Lou & Tom, aka Bamboo Smoke. Accompanied by their drummer, the pair seduced their crowd with their sultry vocals, smooth bass lines and ambient guitar sounds.

Penultimate act AyOwA wooed the crowd with their dark electronica and intoxicating energy. The band’s singles ‘Sommer’, ‘Rus’ and ‘Alt Det Du Ku’ were particular highlights, with Hannah’s beautiful vocals – performed in their native Danish – pulling listeners into their dreamlike creations.

Headliners Black Gold Buffalo performed a powerful set of pop-noir gems. The band released their debut self-titled album earlier this year (read our review here), so we were excited to hear their songs in the flesh. Singles ‘Magnets’, ‘Lay It Down’ and ‘Pearls Deep’ (which we regularly spin on our GIHEs radio shows) were mesmerising, whilst album tracks ‘Body Of Verity’ and ‘Penkenna’ showcased front woman Keziah Stillwell’s vocal abilities perfectly.
