Track Of The Day: EVVOL – ‘Release Me’

Electronic duo Evvol have teamed up with fellow Berlin-based, American filmmaker Matt Lambert to create erotic visuals for their new single ‘Release Me’. The video tackles the under-representation of queer females in mainstream media and censorship of female bodies, providing a docu-style insight into the lives of a group of queer women in Berlin.

“Queer women should be equally as strong and loud as gay boys,” says Director Matt. “They should be powerful in their sexuality and not hidden in the way some people perceive queer women to be.” “Exactly”, agrees co-director Julie Chance (Evvol). “On a personal level, my main problem with different types of media is I don’t see people like myself represented on screen, and I think it’s really important to address this.”

‘Release Me’ was shared as a double single with second track ‘Oceania’ via !K7 Records at the beginning of June. It follows the pair’s critically acclaimed debut album Eternalism (2015), and their 2016 EP release, Physical L.U.V. Like many artist’s today, Evvol spent most of their time post-2016 feeling “overwhelmed by the social upheaval in the world,” so they embarked on other creative endeavours, before returning with a fresh perspective and four new songs.

“These songs were written looking inwardly at how we cope when faced with challenges,” say the band. ‘Release Me’ and ‘Oceania’ will be closely followed by ‘Song for the Broken Hearted (Rollin’)’ and ‘New Old’, and we’re excited to hear more of their arty electronica.

Track Of The Day: Miss Eaves – ‘Bush For The Push’

Having previously fallen in love with Miss Eaves‘ fun-filled, empowering anthems like ‘Thunder Thighs’ and ‘Hump Day’, we’re extremely excited to find out that she’s now set to release a (amazingly titled) new EP Me AF in August.

Our first taste of the new EP comes in the form of ‘Bush For The Push’- another vibrant celebration of self love. With her trademark disco-punk energy, reminiscent of queen Peaches, it’s an empowering and wonderfully entertaining call to be free to have the bush you want – “It’s your body, so have a little fun…”

As well as showcasing her skill for creating immensely infectious, patriarchy-bashing tunes, ‘Bush For The Push’ also gives an insight into Miss Eaves’ love of crafts as a group of women rock her funky handmade ‘merkins’ as she blasts out her liberating message: “Who cares, just dance, let it go!”

Basically, we LOVE everything Miss Eaves does and all she stands for, encouraging us to celebrate and take pride our body, whatever shape or size it may be. Thank you, Miss Eaves, for your wonderful lessons in self-love.

Me AF is out 3rd August. Catch Miss Eaves live:

21st July – Larmer Tree Festival, Salisbury
24th July – Soup Kitchen, Manchester
26th July – DIY Space For London, London
27th July – Dark Horse Moseley, Birmingham

LISTEN: Indian Queens – ‘Pretty Little Thing’

Equal parts driving and delicate, the ever cool Indian Queens have shared their new track ‘Pretty Little Thing’ and it’s as attractive to the ears as its namesake suggests. Released via Cool Thing Records today (June 15th), the single is an infectious blur of hypnotic vocals and shoe gaze guitar sounds.

“’Pretty Little’ Thing started as a childhood memory,” explains guitarist and vocalist Jennifer O’Neill. “My Nan and Grandads’s garden always sounded of birds and far off planes travelling to nicer places. It was a warm feeling and I didn’t want to be anywhere else.” These nostalgic undertones makes ‘Pretty Little Thing’ chime with warmth and understated joy. Jennifer also designed the artwork for the single (pictured below), making this release particularly personal.

Indian Queens are set to play at Southbank’s Meltdown Festival – curated by the inimitable Robert Smith – tonight (15th June) and we can’t wait to seem them live again. Listen to ‘Pretty Little Thing’ below, and follow Indian Queens on Facebook for more updates.

Grab your tickets for Indian Queens’ headline show at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen (12.10.18) here.

Track Of The Day: MIKEY – ‘Love Levitation’

“I make my own rules and break everybody elses,” sings MIKEY in their altruistic voice on new track ‘Love Levitation’. Taken from their recent EP, Paths, the Berlin-based nightlife icon explores themes of “intimacy, embodying both genders and living in fear of being stigmatised by society” on their latest record, and it’s a powerful collection of electronic-based pride and defiance.

MIKEY’s performance history is extensive. From small acoustic sets in Australia, to performing with Sink the Pink and creating unique looks that led to a design commission from Rihanna. House music duo Basement Jaxx even invited MIKEY in to the studio for collaboration ‘Walk the Dog’ and MIKEY has recently featured in a film for Depeche Mode’s Global Spirit Tour, directed by Anton Corbijn.

With their list of accolades forever growing, it’s no wonder MIKEY is seeking a love that “must transcend conformity” on ‘Love Levitation’ – as they champion this in both their lifestyle and their lyrics. After supporting Hercules & The Love Affair in Europe last year, MIKEY will be back on the road this summer.
