LIVE (Photos): Liverpool Sound City 2018

If you weren’t out on a beach/in a pub garden trying to catch as many rays as possible in the untimely good weather last weekend, you may have been enjoying some of the best new music live at Liverpool Sound City.

Our Jon Mo certainly was, and was able to capture some of our favourites on camera.

The lush, folk-inspired beauty of Irish artist Maria Kelly.

GIHE faves HAWK with their poignant, shimmering creations.

The always wonderful, riotous energy of Queen Zee.

The atmospheric power of Sheffield band Bang Bang Romeo.

The catchy, energy-fuelled rock of GIHE faves Berries.

The jangly indie-pop of Peaness.

Stealing Sheep celebrated the centenary of suffrage with a surreal performance art piece inspired by the movement.

Track Of The Day: Ishani – ‘Insomnia’

Following powerful releases such as ‘Don’t Stop The Fight’, which centred on the horrific social effects of rape, Ishani has returned to immerse our ears in her captivating sounds with new single ‘Insomnia’.

An ode to the one in three of us who suffer with the condition, ‘Insomnia’ flows with Ishani’s soulful vocals set alongside glitchy beats and ethereal, whirring hooks. With shades of the likes of Massive Attack or Grimes, it oozes an exquisite, ambient musicality, creating a truly spellbinding and instantly infectious majestic soundscape.

Of the track, Ishani explains:

“[It’s] a love song to all of those sleepless people up all night, trapped in their sheets…”

Track Of The Day: ILL – ‘ILL SONG’

A manic cacophony of post-punk & prog noise, Manchester’s ILL have shared new single ‘ILL SONG’ ahead of the release of their debut album, We Are ILL, tomorrow on May 11th via Box Records.

Recorded over 18 months in the crumbling mills of Ancoats, Manchester, the band channelled their furious love of pop punk into a record that challenges not just the ears, but the stigma surrounding mental health issues; the politics of identity and gender, capitalism and misogyny. Their single ‘ILL Song’ is a surreal, humorous blend of this activism, with a healthy dose of fun thrown in too.

We Are ILL will be released on limited edition transparent blue vinyl, gatefold CD and as a digital audio download on May 11th. The release is accompanied by a launch show at Sebright Arms on the same date, with support from LibraLibra and The Ethical Debating Society, hosted by Club The Mammoth (RSVP here).

Watch the video for ‘ILL Song’ below and follow the band on Facebook for more updates.

LIVE (Photos): Wye Oak @ Deaf Institute, Manchester, 04.05.18

After sitting in traffic chaos for hours and seriously contemplating having to scratch the gig, Wye Oak arrive at Manchester’s Deaf Institute in time to throw the gear on stage, do the world’s fastest sound check and then play an utterly storming set. Though drawing heavily on brand new album The Louder I Call The Faster It Runs might have been a risk, the crowd are 101% on side, all the way to the back of the room.

Mike Hughes was there to catch it all on camera…
