Track Of The Day: LIERS – ‘Universal Female’

A torrent of alternative sound designed to shake your ear drums and get your feet stomping, Dublin-based LIERS have shared their debut single ‘Universal Female’. Formed of vocalist Liz Seaver, Ed Scanlan (Lead guitarist), Stephen Farrell (Bassist) and Ronan O’Hanlon (Drummer), LIERS are inspired by the sound of 90’s bands like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins and PJ Harvey.

The band will be celebrating the release of their debut single by joining Sub Motion to open for post-grunge rockers Fangclub at Whelan’s in Dublin on Thursday April 26th. With the support of Polite Society (Fangclub, Long Tail, Vulpynes) and an EP release lined up on Headwire Records later this year, 2018 is set to be a big year for LIERS.

Track Of The Day: Witch Fever – ‘Toothless’

Having blown us away with their live show at The Finsbury back in January, and received acclaim for their immense last single ‘Carpet Asphyxiation’, Manchester’s Witch Fever are back to blast into our ears with another raging offering.

Propelled by thrashing riffs and pummelling beats, ‘Toothless’ immediately hits you with its intense, ferocious energy. Oozing the seething, snarling power of front-woman Amy’s vocals, it’s another explosive slice of raw, grunge-fuelled rock that once again proves Witch Fever to be a unique, formidable force to be reckoned with.

(*Strobe Warning*)

‘Toothless’ is out now via Black Bleach Records.

ALBUM: Tess Roby – ‘Beacon’

If you are looking for a soundtrack for your fresh Spring evenings, Montreal-based Tess Roby’s debut album Beacon will envelop you in dreamy waves of poetic synthpop. Accompanied by her brother Eliot Roby on guitar, the album is an homage to their father (who died in 2015). Recorded with the drum machines and synthesizers she found in her father’s recording studio, the album evokes the intimacy of family in the beautiful dawn and mist of Tess’s voice.

Kicking off the album with a laidback pop start, ‘Given Signs’ opens out into sparkling guitar hooks, offering belief and hope – “holding onto to given signs, everything you saw in me.” The two singles ‘Catalyst’ and ‘Ballad 5’ are melancholic and reflective, bringing love to the surface in an ethereal arrangement where every single sound has a meaning in hypnotic repetition.

Elsewhere, whispers, memories, and pain are explored. Experiments with found sounds consolidate the overall cinematic effects; in the wind song used in ‘Air above Mirage’, for example, and the chiming Zen-like effects in the funereal ‘Tripling’ – “When I feel nothing is when I am most present.”

Featuring eight tracks of lucid dream pop, the album inhabits the liminal spaces between light and dark, memory and experience. Each song is a carefully crafted cinematic piece, echoing with classic sounds you think you may have heard before – perhaps because it is brimming with latent melodies from classic ’60s to ’80s pop (echoes of the Exorcist soundtrack even!) brought back to life. A debut with depth; listen to the songs and let them bathe you in hypnotic hues of melody and visuals.

Beacon, the upcoming album from Tess Roby, is out 4th May via Italians Do It Better.

Track Of The Day: WHITE RING – ‘Leprosy’

Creators of contagious and corrupting sounds, industrial/alternative outfit WHITE RING have returned after an eight year absence with new single ‘Leprosy’ and it’s “steeped in existential dread”.

It’s the first song the band wrote for their upcoming album Gate Of Grief, which is set to be released on 22nd June via Rocket Girl Records. This was the first time we really wanted to start exploring aggression in our music,” founding member Bryan Kurkimilis explains about ‘Leprosy’. Through Adina Viarengo’s decayed, watery vocals and throbbing industrial beats, the duo have achieved aggression incarnate.

Gate Of Grief follows WHITE RING’s benchmark EP, Black Earth That Made Me, which sold out almost instantly eight years ago, earning them a cult following across the globe. One of the most acclaimed proponents of the “Witch House” movement, WHITE RING will continue to bewitch their crowds when touring the UK in May with God Is An Astronaut.
