Track Of The Day: Angie McMahon – ‘Slow Mover’

A sophisticated new look at modern love, ‘Slow Mover’ is the new single from Aussie artist Angie McMahon.

Angie’s deeply striking voice forms the essence of the track. In a style similar to Angel Olsen and Margaret Glaspy, Angie’s thick, powerful vocal serenades the steady guitar of the song; the instrumental mirroring the title itself.

The chorus’ hook lyric “Try set me on fire” carries a sense of turbulence, and the ragged yet steady instrumental enveloping Angie’s lyrics both echoes and opposes this. The song clearly showcases themes of anticipation, apprehension, and deliberation, wrapped up in a cyclical, poetic representation of modern love.

Produced by John Castle (Vance Joy, The Bamboos), the emotive, connected nature of the track is smoothly exhibited by the track’s tight writing and structure.

Track Of The Day: RedRooms – ‘Our Hearts Beat As One’

RedRooms are a four piece band from Manchester influenced by the likes of Siouxie and The Banshees, Echo and The Bunnymen, Killing Joke and Cocteau Twins. The group are currently busy recording their new album, but they’ve found the time to share their latest blues-infused single ‘Our Hearts Beat As One’.

“The track is about feeling alone in a world where you feel like you’re the only one who cares about anything,” explains RedRooms vocalist Natalie. “It’s about not wanting to bring children into that kind of world, it’s about going through the motions of living in that world whilst you slowly stop caring yourself.”

RedRooms have plans to tour the UK early next year, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates on their Facebook page.

Track Of The Day: Gold Baby – ‘Feed It’

Gold Baby is a brand new indie-rock band based in East London, formed by singer-songwriter, Siân Alex, and her friends Sam (from GIHE faves Long Teeth), Andrew, and Ian. Their first track ‘Feed It’ is out today, and we’re super excited to hear it. If you like fresh vocals, interesting lyrics, and cool guitars that you can shake a leg to, then you will love this.

Kicking off with a catchy hook to get you in the mood, you instantly know that you’re about to be taken on an exciting rollercoaster ride. The excitement builds with Siân’s sumptuous vocals, packing a powerful emotional punch, with the lyrics unfolding as the scuzzy guitars carry it along.

It’s a happy/sad song, with Siân defiantly singing to us about those introspective times in life, where we feed it (“the little voice of misery”). As the guitar lifts up between verses, a feeling of sunny empowerment is fuelled, and you’re left feeling happy to have discovered this promising new band; anticipating more from them to ‘feed’ your musical appetite.

WATCH: Dream Nails – ‘Tourist’

To celebrate the release of their new Dare To Care EP, GIHE faves Dream Nails have shared a brand new video for their latest single ‘Tourist’.

A racing, punk-fuelled offering, packing a punch with its seething, fist-clenching force, ‘Tourist’ was written about emotionally predatory men who are drawn to women when they’re vulnerable. Propelled by guitarist Anya’s truly infectious riffs, pounding beats and front woman Janey’s buoyant energy and impassioned vocals, it’s another sparkling, energy-filled offering from the band.

Charting a girls’ day out to the seaside with a retro tinge, the video sees the band having fun at Margate seafront, dancing on the promenade and generally giving zero fucks to what anyone might think. Filmed and directed by an all female crew, it highlights the band’s ethos of ‘fries before guys’, and oozes all the joy-filled, empowering charm from our favourite Feminist Punk Witches.

‘Tourist’ is yet another example of why we need Dream Nails in our lives; at times like this, we need bands like them more than ever – a group willing to combine activism and music to form a unifying force against the patriarchy. A band who continue to inspire and motivate girls everywhere to get to the front and make our voices heard.
