WATCH: Joanna and The Dropouts – ‘Sold Your Soul’

An homage to old school horror in both style and substance, ‘Sold Your Soul‘ gives the classic tale of a deal with the devil a distinct Joanna and The Dropouts twist. 

The track kicks off with throbbing bass and quick drums to set the mood, perfectly matching the softly lit cocktail bar where the video takes place. A catchy upbeat guitar riff and resounding keyboard hooks create the kind of spooky vibes that suggest the most glamorous vampire you’ve ever seen will loom out of the shadows and offer you something irresistible. Building with driving, urgent beats, a sense of danger is generated, hinting at the trap you’re being lured into.

The opening lines evoke the age-old tale instantly: “You sold your soul for a cheap thrill”. The verses warn of the pitfalls of such an agreement, of the curse that comes hidden with the temptation the devil offers. But the chorus inevitably circles back to “Shaking heads with the devil / Gonna get me some trouble”. The final line of the chorus hammers home the message of the song, that taking the easy option, when rewards are not earned but come at an awful price, can never match a life experienced authentically – “Really living is the steepest risk”.

‘Sold Your Soul’ plays with an iconic story, and makes a lot of stylistic choices that you’d expect to go with it. The bar bathed in red light, the decorative plants that draw attention to the thorns on beautiful roses. But Joanna and The Dropouts infuse the song with so much of their own personality that it still feels original, despite the clear nods to their influences. It is incredibly easy to be drawn into all the fun the band are evidently having with both the track and video.

Track Of The Day: Murman – ‘Falling Down’

Since forming back in 2018 via a Gumtree Ad, London-Brighton band Murman are now a refined four piece who’ve shared stages with the likes of Lucia and the Best Boys and Porridge Radio at esteemed venues such as The Scala and Camden Assembly. Now, following the success of recent singles ‘Baptism’ and ‘Achilles’, they have shared an infectious new offering.

Propelled by swirling, scuzzy hooks and an anthemic, emotion-filled drive, ‘Falling Down‘ oozes a gritty energy in the vein of rock greats such as Bruce Springsteen and The Killers, with an added unique colourful pizazz and impassioned swooning vocals. If you’re in need of an instantly catchy, joyously jangly slice of Americana-tinged garage-rock, then look no further… ‘Falling Down’ offers a perfectly danceable antidote to all of life’s worries. Of the track, the band explain:

“It’s one of those songs that just sticks with you and you keep hearing in your head. We feel incredibly privileged to have collaborated with extraordinarily talented people like Josh Hayward (The Horrors) who worked with us in the studio, Garmo Mandica who mixed and produced the song, and Swedish vocalist Wiktoria who is featured on backing vocals on the track... I’m a big fan of Blondie – I remember hearing ‘Dreaming’ for the first time and it was like a kick to the gut. I wanted ‘Falling Down’ to have that same impact.”

Guest (video) Blog: ARXX

Covid 19 and the necessary restrictions surrounding it have brought about a number of cancellations of music events, including what would have been Get In Her Ears’ very first festival. It would have taken place on Saturday, 18th July, and was set to be a pretty special day, filled with some of our favourite female and non binary artists. Fingers crossed we can finally make it happen next year…

One of the bands set to play was total faves ARXX. The Brighton duo have been wowing us for some time now and, with their raging ferocious energy and unmatched raw power, they’ve blown us away live at The Finsbury on more than one occasion. We just can’t get enough of their immense, empowering anthems, and had been really looking forward to hosting them again.

In the absence of our festival, and any gigs, at the moment, Hanni and Clara from ARXX have recorded a special video, just for us – all about their favourite albums and the music that’s been getting them through lockdown. Have a watch!
