Track Of The Day: Something Leather – ‘Disappear On Me’

After catching them live at We Can Do It’s single launch for Big & The Fat a few weeks ago, we’ve had the sounds of Brighton-based Something Leather swirling round our skulls. Their dark, trippy alternative tunes have kept us in a sultry haze, fuelled by their jagged keys and brooding bass lines.

The band recently released their single ‘Disappear On Me’ and have shared an accompanying video, which shows them having a good(?) time at a party, cut with shots of them performing the track live. It’s an anti-party anthem that ricochets between loud and quiet, up and down, mad and melancholy – just like us on a hangover…

Something Leather return to London on 10th June to play the Leech All-Dayer at Sebright Arms, featuring A Void, Guru, Gaygirl, Hexmaze and more acts to be announced (RSVP here).

EP: Sit Down – ‘Cheap Luxe’

Describing themselves as “halfway between Jack Black and Jack White,” Brighton duo Sit Down are a DIY force to be reckoned with. Formed in 2016 after temporarily living in New York City, guitarist & vocalist Greg Burns and drummer & vocalist Katie Oldham honed their punk ethos and admiration for strong rebellious women and created their knockout debut EP, Cheap Luxe.

Labelled by the band as “the lovechild of sin and substance,” the EP was self-produced between two bedrooms and released online at the end of March. Listeners will be cracking their knuckles in preparation for opening track ‘Mothership’, which provides a defiant, alien-invasion-inspired introduction to an onslaught of seething, seductive sound. Getting revenge sounds brutal and beautiful on second track ‘Bloodlust’, on which Katie leads the vocals and Greg welds more of his manic, menacing riffs.

The devious ‘Honeysucker’ rips through shortly after, demanding listeners attention with its primal drumming, filthy riffs and Greg & Katie’s dual vocals colliding in blood-lusting fashion. Closing track ‘Cheap Luxe’ is a searing, sassy attack on materialism with visceral reverb and pounding percussion that’ll have listeners reveling in the idea that the real high life is “living cheap as fuck!”

There’s no force on earth that will make you sit still – or indeed Sit Down – to this Goliath-sounding debut EP. Get up, get moving and get sweaty to Cheap Luxe. Fans of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Kills & Deap Vally will definitely approve.

EP: ARXX – ‘Daughters Of Daughters’

Keeping the spirit of ’90s Riot Grrrl alive and well in the 21st century, ARXX are an exciting, energetic, garage punk duo from Brighton. Although only playing together since March 2017, when singer/guitarist Hannah Pidduck joined forces with drummer Clara Townsend, they have a big sound that packs a definitive punch with heart and soul. Debut EP Daughters Of Daughters showcases an eclectic range of sounds with subject matter ranging from toxic relationships, to cats, feminism, and addiction.

Throughout the EP there is a raw, unapologetic honesty. Opening track ‘Moments At A Time’ kicks off to the pummelling sound of thrashing guitar and drums, channelling female aggression, just because it can and should – “I’ll break your bones before I break the rules, I don’t really need you, I just don’t want to be alone”, whilst ‘Intervention’ explores misogyny – “this world is still a man’s world, and it still ain’t enough for a woman or a girl.”

 

Moments where we hear the full range of emotion and power in Hannah’s vocals occur when the music slows down, as on ‘Stuck on You’ and ‘The Cat Song’ – two searing, heartbreakingly catchy love songs (the cat’s miaow!). Finally, closing tracks ‘Tired of you’ and ‘Masters of Device’ deal with toxic relationships, fusing together energy and anger in an emotional powerhouse that you can thrash out to whatever way you want, in the kitchen or out of it!

Thirty minutes of listening, and a lifetime to love this band.

Track Of The Day: Anushka – ‘Hitman’

A breezy “offbeat pop song” about the type of guy who thinks he’s “God’s gift”, Brighton duo Anushka have shared their latest single ‘Hitman’. Formed of Max Wheeler and Victoria Port, Anushka combine soul, house, jazz and hip hop to create sounds their upbeat and smooth new sounds.

“The track is about that one guy at school or uni, at work, or in your circle who thinks they’re something special – but really they’re not saying much at all,” Anushka explain about the single. “We’ve all met those ones. We’ve all dated those ones. This is a song for those ones.”

The band’s forthcoming EP will be announced soon and they’ll be touring in March and April with further dates to be announced.
