FIVE FAVOURITES: Cwfen

Forged by tenacious friendship and a shared passion for creating dense-yet-dynamic sounds, Glasgow-based heavy band Cwfen (pronounced ‘Coven’) have recently shared their debut full length album, Sorrows.

Released via New Heavy Sounds, it’s a record that “builds, burns, collapses and resurrects” – a potent amalgamation of their simultaneously doom-laden, diaphanous noise that the four-piece are preparing to perform live across the UK on their upcoming tour supporting L.A. “doomgaze” trio Faetooth.

We think one of the best ways to get to know a band is by asking what music inspired them to write in the first place. We caught up with Cwfen’s lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Agnes Alder to ask about her “Five Favourites” – and she picked five tracks by an eclectic range of artists who have inspired her songwriting techniques.

1. PJ Harvey – ‘Rid of Me’
Of course, it starts with Polly Jean. That intro, how it hangs in the air just a beat too long, daring you. Then her voice, understated but razor-sharp, with those strange, confrontational lyrics. They feel like a promise scratched in broken glass. The breathing, the raw vulnerability, the sudden jarring falsetto before the whole thing detonates into that chorus. It’s a glorious, twisted mess that should collapse under its own weight, but instead it coalesces into something furious and powerful. The sheer audacity of a woman writing something this defiantly fucked up was so interesting to me. I didn’t think women got to write songs like this. She was standing there with her guitar, like some sort of wild goddess, telling you how she was about to become your beautiful, unavoidable problem. I wanted to be even a tenth as cool as her. Still do.

2. Melvins – ‘At the Stake’
This song changed my brain and planted the seed for Cwfen. I remember the exact moment, driving home through this long, flat stretch on the way to Fife, the dusk settling in, the sky dark and bruised. Then thunder cracked, lightning whipped across the sky and this song began. It was like someone put on a film. The storm, the landscape, the history of all the women persecuted as witches in this part of the country. It all became this enormous swell of feeling. That moment etched itself into me. Every time I hear those opening chords, I’m back in that storm. It made me realise I wanted to make music that told a story, that grabbed people by the gut and didn’t let go. It’s a simple song, but it hits you right in the middle. That’s the brutal beauty of it.

3. King Woman – ‘Hem’
I haven’t heard a King Woman track that I don’t love, but this is the one I reach for most. It’s the oppressive quiet; that thick, airless atmosphere that settles like a shroud. And the misery of it – and I mean that in the most loving way. Kris Esfandiari’s voice is otherworldly. Ethereal, melancholy, but this powerful anchor in everything that’s swirling around it. The whole thing is a slow, elegant descent into the dark. It’s claustrophobic but it’s not hopeless. There’s a vulnerability there, a kind of quiet reckoning. I imagine it as the sound of confronting your demons in the loneliest hours and finding strange beauty in the pain. It’s the heavy blanket you pull over yourself when nothing else will do. Their songs do this better than anyone’s.

4. Thorr’s Hammer – ‘Norge’
This track made me fall in love with doom. That funeral-dirge quality, giving way to sheer, elemental brutality. I just loved it from the moment I heard it and thought Runhild was just so bloody cool. It made me realise I wanted to learn to scream. I always think listening to it feels like a summoning. Like someone dragging ancient, indifferent spirits out from the stones. It’s monolithic. Unhurried. Unrelenting. It showed me what bleak beauty could sound like and I wanted to bottle some of that for myself.

5. Lingua Ignota – ‘Do You Doubt Me Traitor’
Gosh, how do I try and explain how this one makes me feel. It’s sort of what I imagine listening to an exorcism might be like. That deceptive fragility at the start, the slow build, then the absolute torrent of rage and sound. Raw. Ferocious. Absolutely disintegrating into the unhinged. The way she rolls every word around in her mouth, cradled deliberately or spat out like a curse. I once had it on in the car and had to turn it off because my passenger was having such a visceral reaction to it. That’s how potent it is.

It gave me the same shock as the first time I heard Diamanda Galás doing The Litanies of Satan. It’s more black metal than most black metal and it has directly influenced how I perform. The feral, unchained part of me on stage owes a lot to this, and finding a way to tap into that part of yourself where you lose all control. And those harmonies at the end are divine, like some sort of twisted Greek Chorus. They have this unsettling, sacred-but-desecrated energy. I wanted to try and do something similar, treating the vocal arrangement as choral rather than lead and backing on Sorrows. This track is a masterclass in catharsis. It’s awe-inspiring in the truest sense of the word.

FIVE FAVOURITES: bedbug

Developing from a lo-fi bedroom-pop solo project into a fully fledged indie rock band, LA based group bedbug shared their fourth album, pack your bags, the sun is growing, via Boston label Disposable America earlier this year.

Along with bandmates Owen Harrelson, Minerva Rodriguez, Meilyn Huq and Drew Cunningham, non-binary front-person Dylan Gamez Citron fleshed out bedbug’s new sound in the studio, and the result is an infectious blend of indie guitar riffs, confessional lyricism and surrealist storytelling, which marks their most “ambitious” work to date.

Having previously supported the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Grouper, Lomelda, Snail Mail, Strange Ranger, yourarmsaremycocoon and Frog, with their new fully fledged sound, bedbug are sure to capture the ears of a new set of fans.

We caught up with Dylan to ask about their “Five Favourites” – five tracks that have inspired their songwriting techniques. 1. Julia Brown – ‘Bloom’
This list is as much a list of my favorite songs as it is equivalently a list of my biggest inspirations when songwriting. So, it only makes sense to start here. This track is the closing track off of an album I can only describe as a modern opus, An Abundance of Strawberries. When I discovered this album (and consequently this song), I was slowly assembling an arsenal of songwriting and production elements that I felt would fit together and that I personally loved. Acoustic guitars, drum machines, synths, cassette warmth, vocals that aren’t overwhelming. Then I found this album. Honestly, at the time I couldn’t believe it existed, like it was just a perfect culmination of my favorite musical stuff. I still feel that way! And this final song sticks the landing like none other. Perfect track!

2. Modest Mouse – ‘Edit the Sad Parts’
I love discovering music, but in many ways I’m a victim of my own sentimentality. Most of the tracks on this list are high school discoveries. This track was my go-to reply to the all-to-common question “what is your favorite song” in high school. And yet, if you were to ask me why, I’m not sure I could explain it! Modest Mouse is still my favorite band (I have the tattoo to prove it), but I love dozens of their songs. It doesn’t have the best riffs (that would go to ‘Broke’ or ‘Talking Shit About A Pretty Sunset’) or lyrics (that’s ‘Bankrupt on Selling’). But I do think it’s the perfect snapshot of what I’d consider a perfect band. To me, this is the most “Modest Mouse” sounding song at all. Slightly emo, scrappy, full of youthful energy, it’s the perfect song to blast out of the car window on a visit to your hometown.

3. Cap’n Jazz – ‘Ooh Do I Love You’ (Acoustic)
When I was in high school, I discovered 90’s indie rock greats like Pavement, Built to Spill and Guided By Voices. My mind was blown (obviously). And then a few years passed. Nothing was scratching the same itch! Modern emo felt too whiny (though I still loved it at the time), indie rock was too produced and bombastic. Hardcore/punk was too angsty and angry for me. I wasn’t really pissed off, mostly anxious and lonely! Indie music in general was grandiose and trying really really hard. Stark contrast to the 90’s era. Fans of Cap’n Jazz can tell where I’m headed with this. A band of high school students, a single poorly recorded anthology record. Bursting with heart, full of beautiful imperfections and esoteric lyricism. And that’s all laid bare on the acoustic version of ‘Ooh Do I Love You’. Why couldn’t all emo be like this?

4. The Radio Dept – ‘Lost and Found’
Something I’m currently realizing, as I type is that every single one of these songs is an album closer. I’m not sure that’s a coincidence. Closer tracks fill the role of the final chapter of a good book, tying up loose ends and making the artist’s intent clearer. I love full albums, and the first Radio Dept album is one of my favorites of all time. I think this is the most beautiful track on it. I can’t think of another track that layers instrumentation to create such a gorgeous soundscape. The lyrics are sad but hopeful, lonely and sentimental. It’s really one of the most therapeutic songs for me.

5. Brave Little Abacus – ‘Orange Blue With Stripes’
This song is really lightning in a bottle to me. The songwriting process for that whole record feels elusive and mysterious, like the songs emerged fully formed out of the ether. How in the world is there lyrical interplay between the vocals and pre-recorded samples from Malcolm in the Middle? Do the repeating lyrical motifs mean anything? Typically, I’m not one to overanalyze a metaphor, I certainly have my fair share of abstraction in lyricism. However, something about the writing on this record begs to be interpreted. And I hope it never is! The mystery is so much more fun. And all of those unresolved melodies and lyrics culminate in ‘Orange, Blue With Stripes’. It was a really special song to me as a teenager, and only became more special at my final show in Boston before I moved. Thanks, Adam.

FIVE FAVOURITES: Cuffed Up

“I have a bachelor’s degree in guitar performance but really I’ve just wanted to write songs and play in rock bands,” explains Cuffed Up‘s vocalist and guitarist Sapphire Jewell. “I had a sad realization this year that I’ve never had guitar role models. To think I’ve been playing guitar for 14 years now and I’ve never been taught anything on guitar by a woman…not even on YouTube or anywhere online. I wish I could’ve had more badass female guitarists to look up to, I think I’d be a better guitarist if I did.” Jewell doesn’t let a lack of representation hold her back though. She fronts LA alt-rock band Cuffed Up with genuine tenacity, stepping into the musical spotlight trying to fill the gaps she’s painfully aware of.

1. Foals – ‘Two Steps, Twice’
First of all, I love Foals and I love their debut album Antidotes. This song is so insanely fun to listen to. It just bops. It’s mathy, poppy and heavy all in one track. How is that even possible?! I think it was one of the first songs I’d recognized as being perfectly crafted to be played live. There’s so much room to change the arrangement and build it out as a banger live track. Now, whenever I write something new I think about the live aspect of it and what it could do in a live setting that’s elevated or different from the recorded version. Even now, 12 years after Antidotes was released, Foals close their shows with this song because it still rips. I gotta have a song like that someday.

2. Nick Drake – ‘River Man’
I’ve loved this song for many years now. It flows so smoothly despite being in an odd 5/4 time signature. I am enamoured by the chilling chord changes, the way his voice sounds like a breeze passing through a quiet town and the strings that just melt me away. It’s so mysterious and fleeting. This song is hauntingly beautiful. Maybe this isn’t a desirable sensation, but it makes me feel old and almost wise for those few minutes. Nothing has ever moved me in that way before. I think more people should know Nick Drake and this song.

3. Grizzly Bear – ‘Yet Again’
Okay, so no one has the right to make such a perfect guitar tone! Especially not in the first four chords?!? God damn this song is unreal. Literally every time this song starts I’m just like “this is IT.” The best part?! It feels new every time I hear it. How can that be? It’s one of those songs that I wish I’d written. I’m not sure I could pinpoint exactly what it is that’s so perfect about this song, but Grizzly Bear sure knows how to layer and produce marvellous music and this is my favourite of theirs.

4. Beach House – ‘Zebra’
This song and this band take me back to the better parts of my life in high school. I didn’t have many friends who were passionate about music, really just one, and we both loved Beach House. Most of my friends didn’t pay much attention to what they listened to but my friend Deric and I would share music with each other. That was really special. Whenever I think of Beach House I think of him. ‘Zebra’ was one of my favourites of older Beach House. They have a zillion amazing songs and they all remind me of the good times during those hellish years of high school.

5. Miike Snow – ‘Genghis Khan’
So this song RIPS and the music video is BRILLIANT. The song stands on it’s own but the video just seals the deal and now it’s unforgettable. It grooves so hard and makes me feel all giddy. This song and its video are untouchable. It’s too good. It’s too fun. I love it way too much. I can’t explain further, it’s one of those you gotta see and hear for yourself. You’d be a fool not to thoroughly enjoy the might and power of Miike Snow’s ‘Genghis Khan’!
