#ThrowbackThursday: GIHE w/ Girls Rock London 28.11.19

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, we’re unable to make it in to the Hoxton Radio studio to broadcast our weekly live new music show from 7-9pm. Instead, we’re sharing previous show recordings as #ThrowbackThursday sessions, so you can still enjoy 2 hours of new music & chats with some of our favourite artists & allies each week.

Today, we’ve picked our November 2019 show with the wonderful Alex & Jodi from Girls Rock London. They joined Kate and guest-host Beth White live in the studio to chat about the amazing work they do with the global organisation, which encourages girls and young women to create the music they want to hear. You can find out more about the initiative at www.girlsrocklondon.com

Track Of The Day: DOLLS – ‘Eggshells’

A catchy slice of garage rock that coolly admits “Everything is messed up”, Dolls have shared their latest single ‘Eggshells’. Lifted from their upcoming EP of the same name, the record (released via Mondo/Death Waltz) will be available on limited edition multi-coloured & etched vinyl as part of the Love Record Stores event on 20th June.

After sharing their debut EP Pop The Bubble in 2018, vocalist & guitarist Jade and drummer Bel have been busy writing new material and working with Producer Margo Broom (Hermitage Studio Works) to create more of their energetic guitar tunes. Filled with buoyant riffs, crashing percussion and strong vocals, ‘Eggshells’ is the first offering from the new EP.

Eggshells is about the struggles that we have faced in our 20’s” explains Jade about the band’s new record. “Losing friends, creepy men, the strive for perfectionism and day-to-day anxiety. We have written about what we feel is really important as we get older. Musically, we have evolved with this EP and although the gritty garage rock is still there we’ve broadened our sound with synths, percussion and multiple vocal layers.”

LISTEN: Noise Noir – ‘Deep Blue Sea’

A a riff-heavy, grunge infused reflection on the destructive nature of depression and anxiety; Noise Noir have shared their latest single, ‘Deep Blue Sea’. Released via We Can Do It Records, the track’s gritty guitars, brooding bass lines and commanding vocals attempt to dismantle the stigma around mental health.

Formed of Kelly Chard (vocals), Anthony Hill (guitar), Elis Sarv (bass), and Luis Bezzi (drums), Noise Noir blend riotous riffs, crashing percussion and charged lyrics to create their unruly sounds, and new single ‘Deep Blue Sea’ is model example of this. The track was recorded by Matt Noades at Rubber Factory Studios and mixed by Tobias May (Sleeper, Yonaka, CLT DRP).

‘Deep Blue Sea’ is about “The feeling of depression, anxiety and how much it affects your everyday tasks.” explains vocalist Kelly Chard. “I feel like a lot of people don’t understand how easily and sometimes quite drastically it can change your emotions. It can feel like your own mind is against you and stops you from doing something as simple as getting ready or going to the shops.

There’s a lot of imagery in the song likening depression and anxiety to drowning and being drawn in by the devil. The chorus is a struggle with wanting to break free but being dragged back down again. I know a lot of people struggle with mental health issues and I want this song to be an anthem for them. Going through all this is extremely difficult and it makes you a stronger person; even if others might perceive it as weakness.”

Track Of The Day: Mourn – ‘Call You Back’

An edgy, relatable exploration of the anxieties around answering the phone; MOURN have shared their latest single, ‘Call You Back’. Released via Captured Tracks, the band have managed to turn their feelings of unease into an instantly gratifying, cathartic guitar tune.

Boldly opening with the repeated lyric “I’d rather die”, the Catalan three-piece are quick to communicate their dread about a seemingly easy task, but then confess on a more personal note: “before letting you know how I feel about you.” MOURN are adept at tapping into universal insecurities, providing a personal angle, and deconstructing them through indie guitar hooks and powerful vocals.

Since the release of their 2019 album, Sorpresa Familia, MOURN have undergone a lineup change (drummer Antonio Postius left the band), and severed ties with their former Spanish label. It’s fair to say the band have done a lot of growing up, and this is reflected in their current single. “I admire you, and it’s hard to realise that you might be wrong” the band admit on ‘Call You Back’, rooting their lyricism in a more mature reality.

The accompanying video for ‘Call You Back’ was (ironically) shot on the band’s smart phones, as they were unable to create the music video they had planned due to Spain’s current lockdown. The result is an inventive, witty set of visuals that communicate the band’s desire to escape their anxieties. Watch the video below, and follow MOURN on Facebook & Spotify for more updates.
