Introducing Interview: Melissa Bel

With four recorded albums and numerous performances around the globe – including a BBC Introducing session – already under her belt, Toronto-born artist Melissa Bel has now shared her utterly infectious and gloriously uplifting new single, ‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’.

We caught up with Melissa to find out more…

Hi Melissa Bel, welcome to Get In Her Ears! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hello! I’m a singer/songwriter originally from Toronto, but have been living in Devon since February 2016. I’ve been pursuing a music career for about ten years now and have released four albums over that time. My latest record, In the Light, was released in Nov. 2016.

How did you start creating music?
I started singing almost as soon as I could talk, and then I wrote my first song (which was actually more of a rap called ‘Believe In Yourself’…) when I was eight after seeing a TV show about songwriting. I basically wrote a bunch of words on pieces of paper, put them on the floor and rearranged them until I was happy with my lyrics. I started learning guitar when I was fourteen because I wanted to write more songs and be able to play along. My Dad is a bass player so I’d asked him to teach me the bass, but he suggested I learn guitar so that I could better accompany myself.

Your new video for ‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’ is out now – can you tell us what it’s all about?
‘Big Boys Don’t Cry’ is a break-up song with a sense of humour. It’s about the kind of break-up that sucks at the time, but you know is for the best. I wanted the video to have a light-hearted, upbeat vibe like the song, which is why we gave the ex-boyfriend character a very small role and focused on themes of positivity and self-confidence. We filmed it on a teeny tiny budget right in Exeter, and almost everyone you see in the video is one of my friends and/or bandmates!

You’ve been compared to the likes of Meghan Trainor and Taylor Swift, but who would you say are your main musical influences?
My influences range from The Beatles to John Mayer, to Joss Stone to Patsy Cline, and I think that’s why my music has never been one specific genre that’s easy to classify. I love pop and soul, which is the main direction we had in mind when making In the Light, but you still get bits of blues, like in the song ‘Sobered Up’, and a real singer/songwriter vibe in the the title track.

How is your local music scene? Do you go to see lots of live music?
Exeter is relatively small but has lots of gigs to offer, and like most music scenes it’s very close-knit and most of the musicians know each other. There really is a ton of talent here and I love the fact that I’ve met so many people who are making amazing, original music. It’s been very welcoming to me coming in as an outsider, and a great place to get my start in the UK. I probably don’t go see as much live music as I should (despite being a musician, I’m not much of a night owl), but I go to my friends’ gigs whenever I can.

And what can fans expect from your live shows?
I usually perform solo, so depending on the gig you’ll get just me and my guitar playing acoustic versions of my originals, covers, or a mix of both. Solo gigs are where my singer/songwriter side really comes out. I love shows where I get to tell the audience the stories behind the songs because I feel like sometimes you can connect as well in those moments as you can while singing. When I’m lucky, I get to play with a full band, which means a more upbeat show in general, and we can play the songs like they sound on the album.

As we’re a new music focused site, are there any new/upcoming bands or artists you’d recommend we check out?
Yes! Check out Brooke Palsson and Mike Todd – both Toronto-based – and Clara Bond who is also based here in Devon. All incredible singer/songwriters.

And how do you feel the music industry is for new artists at the moment – would you say it’s difficult to get noticed?
In my experience it has definitely been difficult to get noticed on a large scale. I think independent artists have a lot of useful resources at their disposal these days, but social media is a bit of a double-edged sword. It’s great because there is the potential to be seen and heard by tons of people, but there’s also so much content out there that’s it’s really hard to cut through the noise.

Finally, what does the rest of 2017 have in store for Melissa Bel?
The rest of the year will be spent playing live as well as getting the ball rolling for a small UK tour in early 2018. And I’m going back to Toronto for two sweet weeks off over Christmas! But I’ll be back in England for New Years Eve to perform at Lime Wood Hotel in Lyndhurst.

Huge thanks to Melissa for answering our questions!

Introducing Interview: Slothrust

Having met at music college in New York, L.A based Slothrust released their third album earlier this year, and have just supported Manchester Orchestra on a number of UK dates.

With their unique brand of energy-fuelled scuzz rock, the band are now back with a mega exciting new release – a covers EP featuring the band’s take on tracks by Al Green, Black Sabbath and none other than Britney Spears.

We caught up with Leah from the band to find out more…

Hi Slothrust, welcome to Get In Her Ears! Can you tell us a bit about the band?
We like to have a good time, and we leave it all on the stage.

How did you initially all get together and start creating music?
We met in college and played together in a bunch of blues and jazz bands. We vibed well creatively, and so we started playing original music as well.

Your new EP Show Me How You Want It To Be is out very soon – can you tell us what it’s all about? Are there any themes running throughout the EP?
The EP consists of songs of different genres that we thought would be fun to do interpretations of. More or less the only theme is that we dig all the songs and have fun playing them and putting our own spin on it.

And you’ve recently shared an awesome cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Baby One More Time’ – what inspired you to do this?
Well, we love Britney Spears and ’90s pop and RnB. Kyle learned the bass line perfectly on his own, so we figured we might as well fill it out. It’s a favourite to play live.

You’ve been compared to the likes of Deerhunter, but who would you say are your main musical influences?

We all like lots of different types of music, but some artists I enjoy are Fiona Apple, John Fahey, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Fats Waller and Erykah Badu.

How is your local music scene? Do you go to see lots of live music?
We used to live in New York, where there are tons of shows every night. We played out a lot and I went to plenty of shows. Many of my friends there are in a band. Now we live in LA, and are on the road a lot, so I like to favor quiet time these days unless there is a really special musician coming to town. Which there often are, so, I suppose yes – I still go to a decent amount of live shows.

And what can fans expect from your live shows?
An honest performance.

As we’re a new music focused site, are there any new/upcoming bands or artists you’d recommend we check out?
I really like the new Big Thief record. I also dig Noname – she played at Lollapalooza with us this year and she is an amazing rapper.

And how do you feel the music industry is for new bands at the moment – would you say it’s difficult to get noticed?
Yes, it’s a really difficult industry to make a living in as an artist. It is very competitive and artists are overworked and underpaid. There isn’t any government funding in the United States for it, and I think that leads to a lot of struggle for musicians that manifests in a bunch of different ways. That being said, if you love something enough, you keep doing it. And we all truly love to play music.

Finally, what does the rest of 2017 have in store for Slothrust?
We are finishing up the music for our next record, which we will start recording next year. We are very excited to put some new material out into the world!

Huge thanks to Slothrust for answering our questions! Show Me How You Want It To Be is out 10th November, pre-order it here

Introducing Interview: Emily Magpie

Having wowed crowds at Green Man Festival and Sofar Sounds sessions, as well as us at Get In Her Ears when she came in – boombox in tow – to be the loveliest of guests on our radio show earlier this year, Bristol-based artist Emily Magpie is now set to release her sophomore EP.

Filled with all the dreamy, electro-folk sounds you could ever possibly need, The Witching Hour is a collection of utterly spellbinding offerings filled with sweeping soundscapes and a captivating ethereal splendour.

Having just shared sparkling new single ‘Leave It To Fate’, we caught up with Emily to find out more…

Hi Emily! Welcome to Get In Her Ears! Can you tell us a little bit about your new project?
I started this project a couple of years ago, just me and my ukulele, and knew I wanted to create a bigger sound and explore electronic elements, as in the eclectic array of music I listen to, as I’m very inspired by electronic music production. So, I started exploring, and my sound came from there.

What initially inspired you to start creating music?
I was travelling around quite a lot and had been writing poetry and singing previously, so started to form songs. It just felt like something I needed to do to express myself. I spend a lot of time day-dreaming and reflecting on the world and my life, so it’s a space for me to do that and see if other people connect with it.

We’re loving the new single ‘Leave It To Fate’ – what’s it all about?
Thank you! I wrote it when I went travelling solo in South America last year. I felt like I was walking away from a lot in my life that I liked – it was kind of weird timing and I thought “What the fuck am I doing?”, so I wanted to write a song to encourage myself to be brave and tread a path less trodden.

You’ve been compared to the likes of This Is The Kit, but who would you say are your main musical influences?
Thanks again, I love their music, it really connects with me. All sorts, hence why my sound is eclectic I guess! I love good songwriting – emotive beautiful stuff like Ibeyi, Bon Iver, Lykke Li, but then I’m a huge fan of electronic music too. At the moment I’m really into Tom Misch, Maggie Rogers, FKJ and Sylvan Esso.

How is your local music scene? Do you go to see lots of live music?
There’s a great scene in Bristol! It’s a hub, I see music most weeks. Being a musician, you get to meet and see lots of other people making great stuff at gigs you play at, but I regularly go to watch new bands too.

And what can fans expect from your live shows?
I’ve been working my arse off with a new live set up; got a loop pedal and launch pad, and it’s ready to go! So, I’ve been enjoying playing with that on stage now. I love playing live – I like connecting with the audience, which normally translates as me chatting shit in-between songs. I need to learn how to be cooler…

As we’re a new music focused site, are there any other new/upcoming bands or artists you’d suggest we check out?
Just went to see Nugget last week – she’s a brilliant dreamy Bristol artist. Also Jausme is awesome!

And how do you feel the music industry is for new artists at the moment – would you say it’s difficult to get noticed?
I feel I’ve been pretty lucky really, but then my focus isn’t really on that. I think just get your head down, create from your heart, be a good person and go with the flow.

Finally, what does the rest of 2017 have in store for Emily Magpie?
Now my live set up is sorted I’m booking up gigs to get it out there, and keen to get touring lots next year. And The Witching Hour EP is out later this month!

Huge thanks to Emily for answering our questions!

The Witching Hour, the upcoming EP from Emily Magpie, is out 24th November.

Introducing Interview: Kid Cupid

Having already received support from the likes of BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, GIHE favourite Kid Cupid are back to win your ears over with a brand new single.

Oozing euphoric layers of sound alongside Laura Shaw’s soulful vocals, ‘Easy’ is a truly blissful slice of electro-pop; a dreamy sonic delight that’ll leave you longing for more.

We caught up with the band to find out more…

Hi Kid Cupid! Welcome to Get In Her Ears! Can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Sure, we’re Laura, James, Ian and John and we’re an alt-pop band based in South London.

How did you initially all get together and start creating music?
Laura and James met on a TV set, both worked in TV production pre music.  James was in a band and they asked Laura to sing on a track. Ian was a close friend of Laura’s boyfriend and then we found John on a Gumtree Ad believe it or not.

We’re loving the new single ‘Easy’ – what’s it all about?
‘Easy’ delves into themes of addiction, I don’t think we’ve been so specific on a theme before. It’s something that we have experienced in some way or another.

You’ve been compared to the likes of Oh Wonder, but who would you say are your main musical influences?
We draw influence from loads of different places – anything from electronica to jazz to punk. I think the Oh Wonder comparison gets brought up a lot because of the vocals in our live show – John and Laura do a lot of harmonies together, which always seems to get audience attention. John’s really into falsetto singing, and Laura has more of a low, husky voice – so the harmonies are inverted in comparison to what you’d normally expect.

How is your local music scene? Do you go to see lots of live music?
The music scene in London is amazing, we try and see as much as possible and it’s always great playing with so many great bands.

And what can fans expect from your live shows?
We have a very bassy sound, and we all stand in a line. The line formation came about from playing on a tiny stage, but the audience seemed to love it so we’ve kept it ever since!

As we’re a new music focused site, are there any other new/upcoming bands or artists you’d suggest we check out?
We just supported Fours and Avec Sans, both are amazing!

And how do you feel the music industry is for new artists at the moment – would you say it’s difficult to get noticed?
Yes and no, it feels impossible at times as it’s so over-saturated but with so many ways to get your music out there these days you just have to be a bit clever to stand out! If you really believe in the music and work hard hopefully good things will come.

Finally, what does the rest of 2017 have in store for Kid Cupid?
Weirdly for us, lots of acoustic stripped back shows and sessions which is really cool to try something different. We have a music video coming out for ‘Easy’ and hopefully some exciting announcements.

Huge thanks to Kid Cupid for answering our questions!

‘Easy’, the new single from Kid Cupid, is out now.
