PLAYLIST: January 2026

It’s our first Playlist of 2026! We’ve put together another eclectic mix of new music for your listening pleasure; featuring punk anthems, indie bangers, electronic musings, experimental sounds & shoegazey, dream-pop tunes. Scroll through our recommendations below!

In order to best support the female, LGBTQIA+ and non-binary artists that we love here at GIHE, we’ve moved away from using Spotify as our main playlist platform. We now have an account on TIDAL, so please follow us on there! You’ll see that we’ve copied all of our previous GIHE playlists over to TIDAL too. We’ve also included YouTube/bandcamp links for all of the tracks below, so there’s plenty of ways for you to get your new music fix.

YAKKIE – ‘He Sleeps Alone’
One of my Ones To Watch for 2026, mega super-group of faves Yakkie are set to release their debut album, Kill The Cop Inside Your Head, next month and I couldn’t be happier. I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a release for a long time. I just feel like it’s now more important than ever to have bands like them, not afraid to speak up for what’s right and use their platform as a real force for change, and since first seeing them live back in 2023, I’ve been desperate for more of all the rage, joy and unity that they offer. Ahead of the album’s release on 13th February, the band have shared an epic “anti fuck boy anthem” in the form of ‘He Sleeps Alone’ and I just cannot get enough of its fierce, seething energy and immense Pearl Jam reminiscent grunge-fuelled hooks.

congratulations – ‘Dr. Doctor’
Brighton art-punks congratulations blend chaotic tempos, intensely danceable beats and a foghorn sample on their latest single ‘Dr. Doctor’. Described as a song for “everyone trapped inside their own head, spiralling and catastrophising,” the track is a cacophonous, cathartic reflection on neurotic thought processes. It’s taken from congratulations’ upcoming debut album, Join Hands, which is set for release on 13th February via Bella Union.

The Empty Page – ‘Death On Our Side’
A band who’ve played live for us more than once and continue to impress with their dark, shoegaze-tinged offerings, Manchester’s The Empty Page have previously covered topics ranging from climate emergency to house cats. Now, with their latest single that follows from their 2024 album, Imploding, they lament the woes of a generation of people with no pension plan other than to die before they need to rely on one. As ‘Death On Our Side’ ripples with a swirling reverb-strewn splendour, it offers a timely impassioned reflection on the stark reality of life in present day Britain. (ML)

Whitelands – ‘Blank Space’
It was such a bright start to the year having London-based shoegazers Whitelands in the studio with us on our January Soho Radio show (listen back here). Etienne, Jagun and Vanessa spoke to us about the deeply personal nature of the songwriting on their second record, Sunlight Echoes, set for release on 30th January via Sonic Cathedral. This track ‘Blank Space’ is a poignant reflection on grief and memory, buoyed by a seamless blend of soaring and melodic riffs. It’s further proof that Whitelands have expanded and developed their already distinctive sound on this new record. I can’t wait to have the vinyl in my collection. (KC)

deary – ‘Seabird’
I saw London-based deary perform at Sonic Cathedral’s 20th anniversary gig back in 2024, alongside fellow shoegaze icons Whitelands and Slowdive. I was really impressed by guitarist & vocalist Dottie’s diaphanous voice and the band’s lush, fluctuating melodies; both of which permeate their latest single ‘Seabird’. It’s lifted from deary’s upcoming debut album, Birding, which is set for release on 3rd April via Bella Union. (KC)

VERO – ‘100 Calls’
I am SO happy that Stockholm trio VERO are back with new music! ‘100 Calls’ is the follow up to their previous single ‘Calico’, both of which feature on the band’s upcoming second album, Razor Tongue, set for release on 20th March via PNKSLM Recordings. Their brooding, grunge-inspired riffs and sardonic vocals remind me a little bit of Sonic Youth and I feel like they’ve really lent into that influence on these new tracks. The band say that ‘100 Calls’ is the “saddest” song on the album, but it still has VERO’s trademark grit and defiance rumbling beneath the surface. (KC)

YELF. – ‘loud’
British-Swedish artist YELF. is a loyal follower of GIHE and involved in multiple musical outfits, including Aether Speaker and Pets and Doom and Gloom – so she’s a prolific talent! This track ‘loud’ is her debut solo offering; a shoegazey tune about “the electric, maddening feeling of liking someone, but being unsure whether they like you back.” Through her grunge infused guitars and yearning vocals, she personifies the feeling of being in romantic limbo perfectly. I’m really looking forward to hearing more from YELF. over the next 12 months. (KC)

Maria BC – ‘Marathon’
‘Marathon’ is the title track from Maria BC’s upcoming third album, which is set for release on 27th February via Sacred Bones – one of my favourite labels. The American artist dissects the spectrum of human emotion and how we endure and persevere through shifting moods throughout the LP, expanding their own sonic palette in the process. Maria’s distorted guitars and serene vocals on ‘Marathon’ help to communicate this experience, making it both a soothing and unsettling listen. I’m looking forward to hearing their new record in full. (KC)

Mi.el – ‘Grains Of Sand’
‘Grains Of Sand’ from London-based dream-pop band Mi.el is a lovely leftover from my December 2025 inbox. Full of atmospheric riffs and brooding vocals, the band say the track is about “positive nihilism, a reflection on finding freedom in insignificance” which hopefully provides listeners with a sense of liberation – an apt sentiment for the new year. Alice Sloan – ‘Return The Ghost’
A brooding alt-folk contemplation on identity and people pleasing, ‘Return The Ghost’ is the debut single from Belfast queer singer-songwriter Alice Sloan. Her rich vocals and grungy ’90s inspired guitar sounds mesh together to make her first solo offering a moody and memorable affair. “‘Return The Ghost’ is trying to find yourself within the noise, when you stop trying to please everyone and realise you don’t know who you are beneath that,” she shares. “Dig deeper, you may discover the parts of yourself you tried to bury.” (KC)

Softcult – ‘Queen Of Nothing’
Since I began following Softcult in 2020, I’ve been consistently impressed with everything that the Toronto-based shoegaze sibling duo have released. They’ve shared multiple EPs over the past six years, but now they are gearing up to release their debut album, When A Flower Doesn’t Grow, on 30th January via Easy Life Records. When I interviewed guitarist and vocalist Mercedes Arn-Horn back in 2024, she hinted that Softcult had pushed their sonic boundaries whilst writing and recording their album, and this single ‘Queen Of Nothing’ beautifully showcases this development. Sharply produced and deeply resonant, the track tackles patriarchal double standards and feelings of inadequacy via dreamy vocals and hazy riffs. (KC)

Thee Soreheards – ‘I’m Not Your Fucking Sex Doll’
‘I’m Not Your Fucking Sex Doll’ is the title track from Montréal punks Thee Soreheads’ debut EP, which they released last year via Outhouse Records. It’s both a visceral and gleeful rejection of objectification and misogyny, fuelled by grinding riffs, intense beats and singer Maria’s Kathleen-Hanna-esque vocals. (KC)

HAWXX – ‘Resistance Is Justified’
Having been big fans of HAWXX since they played live for us back in 2018, I’m excited to hear that they’ve got a new album coming out this Spring. Ahead of the album, they’ve shared an immense and poignant tribute to their friend Jordan, who’s one of the ‘Filton 24’ and has been in prison for over a year without trial for allegedly destroying weapons in the Elbit Factory that were due to be sent to Israel. As they scream “Free, free Palestine!” with a fiercely impassioned grit and a raging energy that builds throughout, their message seems more necessary than ever. This song is a tapestry of collaborations from Ahmed Muin Abu Amsha, a talented music teacher in Gaza whose singing with children over drones circling above have gone viral on social media, members of the Greek Flotilla mission to Gaza (including my cousin Ploutarxos), Petrol Girls, Jasmine 4.t., Bekor, members of Choir Noir, Soren Bryce, Millie Manders, Orchestrated Discontent, Ruby Wednesday and more artists in support of the cause. There is also a sample of Jordan’s sister Brogan, giving a speech in the song. (ML)

Fightmilk – ‘Sounds Like A You Problem’
What’s been described as their heaviest song to date, Fightmilk’s new one is an absolutely perfect return to from one of my most favourite bands. As Lily’s gravelly vocals soar with a rich, sweeping power alongside Alex and Healey’s racing gritty hooks, and Nick’s thrashing beats blast consistently throughout, ‘Sounds Like A You Problem’ offers a proper “big angry song”. Reflecting on Lily’s own experiences with an abusive ex partner with a refreshing honesty, the all-too relatable and recognisable feelings of terror and frustration emanate through the song’s fierce energy, whilst a cathartic sense of empowerment comes at realising it was never your fault. A welcome new direction from a band continuing to hone their sound and show that they’re not afraid to address sensitive topics head on. (ML)

Junk Whale – ‘Lime n Soda’
Responsible for one of my favourite EPs of last year, Junk Whale have started 2026 by releasing more gorgeous new music. One half of their new double single, ‘Lime n Soda’ reflects on the contrasting feelings of being at a gig: “It can be an overwhelming sensory experience for me. It’s dark, it’s loud, it’s cramped with sweaty bodies…but as soon as the music starts, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” vocalist Josie explains. Offering all the gloriously scuzzy hooks and lilting indie-pop energy that we know and love from the band, I can’t get enough of its sparkling raw emotion and cannot wait to have Junk Whale headline for us at The Cavendish Arms on 19th February, along with twee queercore supergroup Tomboy Grandpa (featuring members of Fightmilk and adults) and First Timers alumni Pink Bucky. Tickets are on DICE now and cheaper in advance. (ML)

Me Rex – ‘Angel Hammer’
Another band who’ve played live for us and I’ve been very much in love with for a long time, Me Rex have continued to charm us with their previous five EPs and two albums, and have now shared the first new single to be released on their own label Pterodactyl Limited. Reflecting on vocalist Myles’ chaotic experiences that lead to him getting sober when he was 20, ‘Angel Hammer’ fizzes with an impassioned sense of vulnerability and raw immersive emotion, as the band’s trademark twinkling hooks and introspective lyricism are intertwined with a cathartic driving energy. Scarebears – ‘Scapegoat’
“Brand new, fresh-out-of-the-oven, aggressive post-punk” is how Bristol trio Scarebears describe themselves, and I’m a big fan already. With debut single ‘Scapegoat’ they seethe against the rise of far-right rhetoric in the UK media and mainstream politics with a riotous sense of urgency, reflecting on the hypocrisy and danger of ignorant false narratives that are used to incite violence and discrimination. A fiercely defiant, brutally honest and instantly addictive slice of empowering punk, it’s the first taste from Scarebears’ upcoming EP, Worse for Everyone, which will be released in Spring 2026. I cannot wait to hear more! (ML)

 

Kim Gordon – ‘NOT TODAY’
I probably don’t need to write an intro for this exceptional new Kim Gordon track – but in case you missed it – the acclaimed Girl In A Band author is releasing her third solo album, PLAY ME, on 13th March via Matador Records. ‘NOT TODAY’ embodies the same potent conviction and self assurance that all of the former Sonic Youth bassist & vocalist’s solo offerings have radiated – only here it sounds fuller and more fluid. Midori Jaeger – ‘exasperate’
Another of my Ones To Watch for this year, cellist and songwriter Midori Jaeger has now announced the release of her EP, (Un)planted, on 9th March. Having instantly caught my attention with their unique style of playing the cello and the soothing allure of her vocals while playing in Tanita Tikaram’s band back in October, the Japanese London-based artist creates immersive soundscapes that are truly her own, with latest single ‘exasperate’ being no exception. Swirling with angular yet beautifully smooth finger-picked hooks and Jaeger’s sumptuous vocals, it soars with an invigorating energy and I can’t wait to hear the full EP very soon. (ML)

TTSSFU – ‘Upstairs’
This stand alone single from Wigan-born, Manchester-based artist TTSSFU was released late last year, but it’s been swirling around my head ever since. Based on an unhealthy romantic infatuation, it’s a tender rumination on the disconnection and isolation that can fester with this kind of obsession. TTSSFU released one of my favourite EPs of 2025, titled Blown, so I’ll be keeping a keen eye on the new music she shares over the next 12 months. (KC)

Ailbhe Reddy – ‘That Girl’
Existing in the emotional ether of a breakup, Dublin-born artist Ailbhe Reddy’s upcoming third album, KISS BIG, is a wholehearted affair that continues to spotlight her talent for empathetic songwriting. Set for release on 30th January via Don Giovanni Records, ‘That Girl’ features on the record and is described by Ailbhe as the “emotional anchor” of her upcoming offering, full of her tender vocals and observational lyricism. She’ll be playing a London headline show at The Lexington on 21st April to celebrate her new album. Tickets are on sale now! (KC)

Tenderness – ‘The Salt Flats’
As someone who had Deep Throat Choir soundtrack me walking down the aisle, hearing the voice of anyone from that incredible collective always feels pretty special. And so the news that Katy Beth Young (also of Peggy Sue) is sharing more new music from her solo project Tenderness is very welcome to my ears. Ahead of the release of her debut album, True, on 13th March, ‘Salt Flats’ showcases Young’s gorgeously rich vocals as twinkling Americana-tinged hooks ripple throughout, reflecting with a stirring gentle melancholy on the fleeting nature of joy. I can’t wait to witness Tenderness’ beautiful offerings in the perfect setting of St Pancras Old Church on 18th March. (ML)

Charlotte Cornfield – ‘Hurts Like Hell’
Ahead of the release of her sixth album in March, Charlotte Cornfield has now shared the beautiful title track. A poignant rumination on addressing insecurities and putting yourself out there, ‘Hurts Like Hell’ flows with warm Americana-infused melodies alongside Cornfield’s distinctive rich vocals. Showcasing Cornfield’s ability for heartfelt lyrical storytelling and exposing an endearing vulnerability, its delicate grace shimmers throughout as we’re introduced to what promises to be an exquisite album. Special Friend – ‘Breakfast’
Set to release their new album, Clipping, on 30th March, French-American Paris based duo Special Friend may be new to me but I’m already pretty obsessed with their fuzzy uptempo hooks, lilting energy and rich syrupy harmonies. A perfectly short but extremely sweet slice of sunny dream-pop, ‘Breakfast’ is our first taste of the upcoming album, and if that’s what’s on the menu, I can’t wait for lunch and dinner…(sorry) (ML)

Radhika ft. Gerard Love & Mitch Mitchell – ‘Starry Eyes’
A supergroup of sorts, featuring Gerard Love (Lightships, Ex Teenage Fanclub) and Mitch Mitchell (The Pastels) alongside vocalist Radhika Meera Dade, Radhika have started the year with an effervescent taste of their upcoming new album, Cine Pop. Interweaving a range of influences, from the films of David Lynch to her own Indian heritage, Radhika creates utterly dreamy, shimmering soundscapes rippling with a spellbinding allure. Reflecting on intergenerational connections and the passing of souls into the next realm, ‘Starry Eyes’ demands multiple listens and will draw you into the cosmic world of Radhika on first listen. Hater – ‘Angel Cupid’
Malmö-based indie-pop band Hater said they weren’t expecting to write a bunch of love songs for their upcoming album, Mosquito – set for release on 6th March via Fire Records – but that’s what flowed from their fingertips after a long hiatus. This reluctant feeling is epitomised on the band’s latest single ‘Angel Cupid’, which sees them tenderly, yet disdainfully reject the omnipresent notion of traditional love and the archetype of Cupid, by seamlessly combining explicit lyrics and lush melodies together. Sunflower Thieves – ‘Already Taken’
Leeds alt-folk duo Sunflower Thieves have returned with their new single ‘Already Taken’ – a poignant reflection on the emotional resilience that’s earned after enduring a difficult breakup. Full of their lush dual vocals and gentle acoustic riffs, Amy and Lily provide listeners with a calm resolution to a troubling period of time. The band will be touring the UK this year, including a London headline show at The Grace in Islington on 28th April. (KC)

Flip Top Head – ‘Porcelain Plugs’
Brighton art-rockers Flip Top Head draw inspiration from acclaimed poet Sylvia Plath on their latest offering ‘Porcelain Plugs’. Taken from their recent EP, Trilateral Machine, the track alludes to the restorative qualities of a hot bath, something which Plath notably mentioned in her 1963 novel, The Bell Jar. Flip Top Head are currently on tour across the UK in support of Independent Venue Week and they’ll be returning to London on 7th March to play one of their biggest headline shows to date at The Lexington. Hannah Schneider – ‘In This Room’
Another artist who we’ve been fans of for a number of years now (and having played live for us as one half of the electronic duo AyOwA), Danish artist Hannah Schneider returns to grace our ears with a new album set for release on 7th February. Title track ‘In This Room’ swirls with a shimmering melancholy, reminiscent of the stirring grace of Beth Gibbons, as it offers a heartfelt meditation on the stories we tell and the memories we cherish. The upcoming album focuses on acoustic instrumentation and craftsmanship and was created in collaboration with a number of different musicians at a residency at Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen. Kee Avil – ‘itch’
Since the release of her debut album, Crease, in 2022, I have been intrigued by the glitchy, distinctive sounds of Montréal-based experimental artist and producer Vicky Mettler aka Kee Avil. Her appetite for exploring the human condition through her cell-tingling soundscapes seems to know no bounds, and these ambitions have been amplified by her upcoming project. Starting with this evocative offering ‘itch’, Kee Avil has teamed up with NNA Tapes and plans to write and record her new album, Vapor, in real time – releasing the songs in chronological order over the next 12 months. “My hope is that at the end, a natural cohesion appears, a concept reflecting a frozen moment in time, a process from start to finish,” she explains. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with. (KC)

Isabel Pine – ‘A Flickering Light’
This beautifully soothing piece of music is lifted from Fables, the upcoming debut album from British Columbia-based, classically trained musician Isabel Pine. Set for release on 20th February via kranky, Isabel recorded her new LP in a remote cabin, playing her instruments outside amongst the sounds of nature, which gives Fables a truly pensive, peaceful quality. This intuitive collaboration is deftly captured on ‘A Flickering Light’. (KC)

Sarah Pagé – ‘Spring Is Here’
This beautiful soundscape from Montreal-based harpist Sarah Pagé features on grassroots benefit compilation album, Gaza Is The Moral Compass, released digitally & on cassette via Beacon Sound and launched publicly on Radio AlHara (Bethlehem). It is one of sixteen altruistic and eclectic tracks on the record, which features contributions from Amulets, Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and Kareem Samara. Sales of the album will benefit two Palestinian-led mutual aid groups on the ground in Gaza: Seeds Of Hope and Reviving Gaza. This is the first in a series of compilations that Beacon Sound have planned to help provide relief to the long suffering people of Palestine. Noémi Büchi – ‘I was almost there’
Inspired by everything from “the dislocated bodies of Francis Bacon” to the transience of memory, physical touch and intimacy; this experimental soundscape from Swiss/French artist Noémi Büchi is deeply intriguing. It’s lifted from her upcoming album Exuvie – derived from the Latin word ‘exuviae’ meaning ‘what has been shed’ – which is due on 27th February. Through her genre-blending, idiosyncratic instrumentation, Noémi manages to truly get under the skin and conjure up a potent, emotional response to her sounds. (KC)

Hannya White – ‘Slow my mind’
Released as part of a compilation album by Metamorphika – an artist-led community-driven arts space, commercial gallery & music label – this industrial-tinged track from London-based artist Hannya White slipped into my GIHE inbox at the end of 2025. It’s an unnerving, visceral offering with its piston-like beats and breathy voicework. Definitely check out the whole compilation, Metamorphika Vol. 1, if you like what you hear from Hannya – it’s an intense amalgamation of noise, industrial textures and genre-bending sounds from an array of unusual artists. Tanya Tagaq – ‘Foxtrot’
Having been a big fan of innovative vocalist and composer Tanya Tagaq at Get In Her Ears for a number of years now, we’re excited to hear that she’s releasing her new album, Saputjiji, on 6th March. Weaponising the military alphabet into a protest callsign, latest single ‘Foxtrot’ offers us an insight into the starkly compelling power of the upcoming album. Venturing between beautifully ambient and fiercely abrasive soundscapes, Saputjiji offers a potent counter-strike against billionaires, genocide, abuse and colonial systems, and I cannot wait to immerse myself in it fully. HAVVK – ‘You Say You Won’t’
Ahead of the release of their upcoming new album in March, GIHE faves HAVVK have shared another spellbinding taste of what’s to come. As front person Julie’s celestial vocals emanate throughout, ‘You Say You Won’t’ showcases the Dublin trio’s ability to create a shimmering immersive grace whilst touching on poignant subject matter. I really can’t wait for them to come and headline for us at The Shacklewell Arms on 28th March, especially as they headlined the first ever gig we hosted back in 2016 – it’s going to be a pretty special evening, with support from Athabaska and Rats-Tails. Fraulein – ‘Wait and See’
Unsurprisingly, the GIHE team all love this latest single from Northern Irish/Dutch duo Fräulein. ‘Wait and See’ focuses on the contradictory nature of anxiety, and how we clench our teeth through it, rather than treating the issue underneath it. It’s another seamless blend of the band’s trademark gritty-yet-melodic riffs and considered, hard-hitting beats. I can’t wait to see Fräulein play live at Scala supporting art punks JOHN on 29th Feb.

SPRINTS – ‘Heavy’
We’re big fans of SPRINTS here at GIHE, so watching their stellar debut album, Letter To Self, receive so much love and acclaim when it was released at the beginning of this month was a real joy. The Dublin-based band are a formidable force on the stage, and this track in particular showcases their intense, dynamic songwriting talents. (KC)

Gouge Away – ‘Stuck In A Dream’
This angst-ridden anthem from Florida-based five piece Gouge Away has been stuck in my head for an entire month. Visceral vocals, heavy riffs and relentless beats – I’m obsessed. ‘Stuck In A Dream’ is taken from Gouge Away’s upcoming third album, Deep Sage, which is set for release on 15th March via Deathwish. The Baby Seals – ‘Mild Misogynist’
Cambridgeshire punk trio The Baby Seals are back, and I could not be happier about it. Following a little hiatus for life stuff, they have now announced the release of their debut full length album and shared a typically catchy, witty and gently raging tune that’ll lodge itself firmly in your ears on first listen. Reflecting on those men we all (sadly) come across on a daily basis who claim to be feminists because they happen to have a wife/daughter/mother, but are actually a huge part of the problem with their damaging micro-aggressions and embedded sexist views, with its gritty energy and danceable hooks, ‘Mild Misogynist’ is the perfect re-introduction to The Baby Seals’ ability to deliver their all-too-necessary message with a fizzing sense of fun. Self Torque – ‘No Rest’
I’m so impressed that Brighton-based Self-Torque has managed to transform feelings of desperation and inadequacy into a frenzied, vibrant anthem on ‘No Rest’. Taken from their recent EP, No Rest For The Depressed, it’s a potent reminder that there are always better days on the horizon, and that you are more capable than you think you are. (KC)

Ski Lift – ‘Double Yellow’
Following last year’s catchy ‘Living The Dream’, London trio Ski Lift are back with a stirring new single. With bassist Lizzie Walsh taking the lead on vocals, ‘Double Yellow’ flows with a whirring splendour as lush harmonies intertwine with a sparkling energy. Inviting us all to take a step back and absorb the often overlooked beauty of our surroundings with a lilting warmth, it showcases songwriter Benji Tranter’s ability to turn even the most everyday of situations into genuinely heartfelt, and instantly catchy, indie-pop anthems. The Menstrual Cramps – ‘Abortion’
“I’ve had an abortion, no I’ve had two / If you don’t like it, then fuck you!” Straight to the point, as always, Bristol faves The Menstrual Cramps have now shared this raging, honest and utterly necessary pro-choice anthem at a time when we need it more than ever. Written in response to archaic laws being imposed against women who seek abortions, both in the US and here in the UK, the track seethes with a fierce angst, whilst showcasing front person Emilia’s trademark stark wit and ferocious energy. With their return, The Menstrual Cramps continue to create a perfect balance of unifying joy and rage that has never felt more urgent. pink suits – ‘C.O.F.F.E.E.’
Following last year’s riotous single ‘Refuse The Rules’, total faves pink suits have now shared another taster of their upcoming second album in the form of a new tongue-twisting punk anthem. Although seemingly less politically charged than some of the Margate duo’s previous offerings, ‘C.O.F.F.E.E.’ touches on themes of addiction and exhaustion but with a racing, fun-fuelled energy, oozing the band’s playful charisma. Whilst essentially Lennie and Ray’s soundcheck song, it showcases all there is to love about the immense formidable force that is pink suits. Watch the caffeinated new video for ‘C.O.F.F.E.E.’ here. Dystopian Hellscape, the upcoming second album from pink suits, is set for release on 1st April. (ML)

Dermabrasion – ‘Magic Missile’
Another brooding, ominous cacophony from Toronto-based duo Dermabrasion. The band have just shared their superb debut album, Pain Behaviour, via Hand Drawn Dracula and it is well worth your attention. Industrial-tinged post punk noise: 100% a bit of me. (KC)

GHLOW – ‘Big City’
Stockholm alternative duo GHLOW are back with a brand new album, Levitate, which is set for release on 8th March via PNK SLM. This track, ‘Big City’ is the first exciting, intense glimpse of what listeners can expect from the new record. (KC)

The Fauns – ‘Shake Your Hair’
Following a decade-long hiatus, Bristol based shoegaze ensemble The Fauns have now returned to charm our ears, releasing their new album this month. Showcasing the sweeping ethereal soundscapes that we’ve come to know and love from the band, whilst dipping into newer, electro-driven sounds, the album as a whole oozes a mystical allure as glistening instrumentals provide a backdrop for Alison Garner’s exquisite emotion-rich vocals. I’ve had it on repeat since first hearing it, immersed in its captivating blissful haze. Read about the five songs that have inspired Garner’s vocal style the most here. Heart Rot – ‘Anchors To Elsa’
Inspired by the quiet-loud dynamics of the ‘90s grunge scene, New York band Heart Rot deliver their ethereal yet gritty creations with a fierce allure. A completely DIY project, the band draw influence from their experience as girls and connection to the natural world in their songwriting, and pride themselves as artists honing their craft; not just in creating their music, but in their merch too, hand-making it all from second-hand clothes. With just two songs out so far, they’re a new favourite for sure; I can’t wait to hear more of their raw, bewitching soundscapes. (ML)

Tusks – ‘Adore’
I love this evocative single from London-based electronic artist Tusks. It’s lifted from her her upcoming album, Gold, which is set for release on 12th April via One Little Independent Records. Inspired by a variety of contrasting experiences and emotions, the album is a dynamic, intricate musing on the shifting nature of love, time and change. I look forward to hearing it in full. (KC)

Fears – ‘4th of the 1st’
I’m so glad that Dublin-born, London-based interdisciplinary artist Constance Keane aka Fears is back! Taken from her upcoming second album, affinity, which is set for release on 22nd March via TULLE, this single ‘4th of the 1st’ delicately dismantles the duplicitous and intrusive thoughts that follow in the aftermath of a complicated breakup. It’s a poignant reflection on emotional resilience and self-soothing. Watch the accompanying video for it here. (KC)

Birthday Problem ft. Ailbhe Reddy – ‘E.L.E’
‘E.L.E’ is the atmospheric debut release from Birthday Problem, a collaborative electronica project between Irish musicians and producers Matt Harris (HAVVK) and Rocky O’Reilly. Released via VETA Records, ‘E.L.E’ – which stands for ‘Extinction Level Event’ – follows the narrative of a fictional character who is in an underground post-apocalyptic world. The track also features vocals from GIHE fave Ailbhe Reddy. (KC)

KÁRYYN – ‘Anthem For Those Who Know’
Marking her first new music release in four years, ‘Anthem For Those Who Know’ is a defiant return to form for Armenian-American songwriter, composer & producer KÁRYYN. It’s a poignant statement about self autonomy and the significance of advocating for yourself and others in the face of adversity. Co-produced with Hudson Mohawke and released via Mute, ‘Anthem For Those Who Know’ is a rumination on the importance of protest in all its forms. (KC)

Schande – ‘Relevant Campaigns’
I can’t seem to stop listening to this song and crying. A thing of pure beauty. Its twinkling grace. The whirring to-ing and fro-ing, like the constant rippling of the tide that keeps going even when everything else seems like it’s stopped. The shimmering hooks that rise and fall. Jen’s whispering vocals fading in and out with an understated melancholy. Written while her mother was terminally ill, it’s an exquisite rumination on the fragility of life and the strength of love. Watch the beautiful accompanying video here, and keep you eyes peeled for Schande’s upcoming new album, Once Around, set for release this year via Thurston Moore’s The Daydream Library Series. (ML)

Moor Mother – ‘Guilty’
Following critical acclaim for her 2021 album Black Encyclopedia Of The Air, innovative artist Camae Ayewa – aka Moor Mother – has now announced the release of her 9th studio album. Our first taste of the album comes in the form of ‘Guilty‘, a collaboration with Lonnie Holley, Mary Lattimore and Raia Was. Oozing a mystical energy, it encapsulates the sentiment of the album – a poignant and necessary message, bringing to our attention crimes committed by our ‘fair isle’. As the glistening musicality provides a backdrop to lists of ‘great’ Britain’s injustices against humanity and the harsh realities of colonialism, the juxtaposition of the horror of ‘Guilty’s message with the beauty of its musicality is stark. A hauntingly beautiful offering; an urgent message encased in an evocative sonic grace. The Great Bailout, the ninth album from Moor Mother, is set for release on 8th March via ANTI-. (ML)

Allison Lorenzen – ‘Words’ (Low Cover)
Taken from the upcoming album, Your Voice Is Not Enough – a tribute to the band Low – Allison Lorenzen’s cover of ‘Words’ made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I first listened to it. The album was born from a conversation between Planning For Burial’s Thom Wasluck and record label The Flenser, who were inspired by the “nuanced beauty” of Low’s discography. Whether you’re a fan of Low or not, Allison’s cover and the renditions on the record are well worth your attention. The album features contributions from Midwife, Amulets, Planning for Burial and more. (KC)

Katy Kirby – ‘Hand To Hand’
Flowing with lilting melodies and rich, sumptuous vocals, Brooklyn artist Katy Kirby’s new single reflects on what she calls ‘heteropessimism’ and the gory collapse of several relationships, with a twinkling, yet gritty, allure. The single comes ahead of the release of Kirby’s second album, Blue Raspberry, later this month, which sees her delving into her sexuality and the ways we present ourselves during the quest for love. The album’s out on 26th January via ANTI, and I can’t wait to hear more of Kirby’s beautifully honest creations. (ML)

bedbug – ‘halo on the interstate’
Originally a solo project from non-binary artist Dylan Gamez Citron, LA-based bedbug has now expanded its lineup to include Owen Harrelson, Minerva Rodriguez, Meilyn Huq and Drew Cunningham. Together, the band are preparing to release their fourth album, pack your bags, the sun is growing, on 15th March via Boston’s Disposable America label. This single ‘halo on the interstate’ showcases their fully fleshed out new sound perfectly. (KC)

Grace Petrie – ‘Start Again’
Having been a big fan of Grace Petrie for a number of years now, and being lucky enough to interview her back in 2021, I’m super excited to hear that she’ll be releasing her third album in March. With its chiming piano alongside Petrie’s heartfelt vocals, new single ‘Start Again’ offers a stirring first taste of the album; a rousing ode to the power of solidarity. Building with a gentle emotive spirit, it showcases her ability to create beautifully catchy folk-strewn anthems that ripple with an undercurrent of politically-charged urgency. Build Something Better, the upcoming album from Grace Petrie, is out on 8th March on The Robot Needs Home Collective. (ML)

Waxahatchee ft. MJ Lenderman – ‘Right Back To It’
Kansas based artist Katie Crutchfield aka Waxahatchee’s been one of my most played artists of the last few years – her heartfelt Americana-tinged ballads just get me every time. And latest single ‘Right Back To It’, is no different. Featuring MJ Lenderman on backing vocals, their voices intertwine to create blissful heartfelt harmonies alongside lilting banjo melodies; my favourite combination of sounds. It’s just exquisite and I can’t wait to hear more on the upcoming new album, Tiger’s Blood, set for release on 22nd March via ANTI-. (ML)

A brooding, atmospheric soundscape that explores the way our moods fluctuate during uncertain times, I’m obsessed with this track from London-based trio Ritual Forms. Lifted from their upcoming debut album, Nighttime Economy, which is set for release on 2nd March, it’s a captivating blend of hypnotic loops, steady beats and intoxicating vocals.

CIRCE – ‘Undone’
A sonic manifestation of power, I love this new tune from dark-pop artist Circe. I’ve been listening to her 2020 EP She’s Made Of Saints again recently, and I’m always so impressed by her ability to create such immersive, cinematic soundscapes that melt away the edges of reality. ‘Undone’ is no exception. I can’t wait to see her perform it live at The Shacklewell Arms on Monday 30th Jan. (KC)

Frankie Rose – ‘Anything’
Set to release her fifth studio album this Spring, New York based artist Frankie Rose has now shared her latest single ‘Anything’. Propelled by a whirring ‘80s-inspired drive with shades of the likes The Cure (you should also check out Rose’s Cure cover album Seventeen Seconds), a glistening soundscape flows with a stirring anthemic majesty, creating a blissful slice of electro-pop. Love As Projection, the upcoming new album from Frankie Rose, is set for release on 10th March via Night School Records. (Mari Lane)

ARXX – ‘Ride Or Die’
I challenge you to listen to this new one from absolute faves ARXX without hitting repeat at least 10 times… It’s just such a totally infectious anthem. All propelled by thrashing, impeccable time-keeping from Clara, ‘Ride Or Die’ showcases the gritty, emotion strewn vocals of Hanni, alongside sweeping catchy pop hooks and an empowering euphoria of unified voices singing along with the chorus. An utterly uplifting celebration of queer love and unwavering friendship, it’s the perfect sing-along anthem live. Being able to share a room full of adoring fans, all joining in joyously with “I would” at The Social a few months back was a blissfully memorable experience that I hope to re-live very soon. ‘Ride Or Die’ is out now via Submarine Cat Records, ahead of the release of ARXX’s upcoming album of the same name, which is set for release on 31st March. Grandmas House – ‘Desire’
GIHE fave Grandmas House are back with this gritty new single! Taken from the upcoming new EP, Who Am I, which is set for release on 3rd March via Brace Yourself Records, the track is inspired by the disorientating power of romantic infatuation, full of charged riffs and commanding beats. (KC)

Piss Kitti – ‘I’m Jammed’
This belter from Liverpool-based punks Piss Kitti was released at the end of 2022, but it’s a taste of what’s to come from the band later this year. Having previously supported Black Lips, Dream Wife and Amyl & The Sniffers, it looks like 2023 is set to be another big year for the band. I’m looking forward to hearing more tunes like this in the near future. (KC)

ALT BLK ERA – ‘Rockstar’
From the opening riff of ‘Rockstar’ to the track’s final lyric, I love this alternative anthem from Nu Metal sister duo ALT BLK ERA. It dropped into my inbox at the end of last year and it’s been ricocheting around my skull ever since. (KC)

Tokky Horror – ‘Hammer 2 The Face’
Rave-punk trio Tokky Horror will be unleashing this frenzied, excellently named anthem on their crowds at grassroots music venues across the UK for Independent Venue Week from the 1st of February! This track is described as “A sub 2-minute blast of urgency, taking aim at the casual sexual harassment that plagues femme’s in gig spaces.” I can’t wait to hear it live at The Black Heart in Camden. Alien Chicks – ‘Cowboy’
The new single from GIHE faves and Ones to Watch for this year, Alien Chicks’ ‘Cowboy’ offers an insight into the trio’s ability to create relentless funk-fuelled punk-rock with a truly unique edge. Building from a sultry rumination on anxieties to a frenzied blast of whirring, riotous emotion, it’s another wonderfully chaotic cacophony from the South London trio. About Bunny – ‘Teeth’
Taken from their recent EP Mixtape Vol.1, this single from London-based rock band About Bunny bites chunks out of its listeners. They’ll be playing at The Hope & Anchor in Islington on 16th February, so head down to see them live if you like what you hear. (KC)

Berries – ‘Spiral’
Following the release of their debut album, How We Function, last year, long term faves Berries have been going from strength to strength lately. Recent single ‘Spiral’ showcases all there is to love about the London trio; an instantly infectious slice of garage-rock, it hits you with its raw, scuzzy power and Holly’s distinctive sumptuous vocals and spiky guitar hooks. Driven by a frenetic energy, it perfectly captures the utterly compelling allure of the band’s live shows – witness this for yourself on their March headline tour – details here. (ML)

The Early Mornings – ‘Early-Modern Rain’
Having just released their second EP Ultra-Modern Rain, London trio The Early Mornings have been becoming known across the London scene for their energetic live sets, and wowed crowds at Left Of The Dial festival last year. Latest single ‘Early-Modern Rain’ fizzes with a jangly energy with shades of left-field legends The Raincoats, as angular hooks flow with a scuzzy allure. A perfectly playful slice of post-punk that will leave you eager to listen to the album in its entirety. (ML)

Softcult – ‘Dress’
Canadian twin siblings Softcult are back with this hazy new offering which tackles the issue of consent. Blending buoyant melodies with their candid lyrics – “It’s a dress, not a yes / Not a fucking invitation” – the band refuse to remain silent in the face of pervasive everyday sexism. The track is taken from their upcoming EP, see you in the dark, which is set for release on 24th March. (KC)

Death Valley Girls – ‘Sunday’
The latest single from LA psych-rockers Death Valley Girls, ‘Sunday’ oozes an enchanting other-worldly splendour. Building with a fizzing energy, it harks back to the psychedelic sounds of the ’70s California scene, whilst showcasing the band’s ability to create something that is utterly unique, reflecting on the process of addressing your pain and being honest with yourself. A beautifully immersive trip into the cosmic world of Death Valley Girls. Islands In The Sky, the upcoming new album from Death Valley Girls, is set for release on 24th February via Suicide Squeeze Records. (ML)

Mandy, Indiana – ‘Injury Detail’
Thumping beats and heavy, unpredictable rhythms permeate this track from experimental electronic outfit Mandy, Indiana. Influenced by the dystopian worlds of Blade Runner 2049 and video games like Bisoshock, vocalist Valentine Caulfield explains: “‘Injury Detail’ was inspired by the idea of being trapped in a liminal space, with the guitars creating a seemingly limitless and undefined landscape. The vocals act as a guide to possible salvation, or perhaps something of a more sinister intent.” (KC)

Lizzy Young – ‘Cigarettes Are Good For Pain’
Someone I’m very excited to hear more from over the next 12 months is Lizzy Young. This track is a love letter to everyone who identifies as a woman, a confrontational art-pop, electro and trap record! (TW)

Rumpistol x Kill J – ‘Walk On Home 2.0’
I was so excited to see Kill J pop up on track, and it’s one I’m going to let speak for itself. ‘Walk On Home 2.0’ is a sensationally layered soundscape. (TW)

Livia Rita – ‘FUGA FUTURA’
This sensational track is taken from Livia Rita’s album of the same name, and I can’t stop listening to it and leaning into the journey it takes me on. They will be releasing a music video for this track soon, where all the different creatures from their previous passages come together as a collective to create a portal into their queer mythologies. It is a mystical journey, a collection of possible future identities, inspired by our desires, dreams and fears for the future. It is a place of healing and fantasy, where nature rebels and magic abounds all in an attempt to unite otherworldly revolutionaries – to a swampy slow pop anthem. Are you ready? I am! (TW)

Nameless Twin – ‘Dead Roses’
I love everything about this haunting new single from industrial-electronic duo Alicia Rei Kim and Ryan Osterman aka NAMELESS TWIN. They’ve only released a handful of tracks so far, but all of them have been the perfect blend of dark, dreamy sounds. (KC)

Feral Five – ‘Truth Is The New Gold’
Ahead of the release of their new album next month, electro-punk duo Feral Five have shared the title track as a scintillating taste of what’s to come. Propelled by a fierce energy, ‘Truth Is The New Gold’ explores truth and trust between both people and information. Offering a glitchy soundscape fizzing with an ethereal whirr, Kat’s sweeping, rich vocals flow as a sparkling cinematic splendour immerses the listener. Truth Is The New Gold, the upcoming new album from Feral Five, is out on 10th February via Reckless Yes. (ML)

girl with dream – ‘HRT’ (Heart Replacement Theory)
I can’t get enough of this song by girl with dream, the newest project from trans singer-songwriter Chris Lawson alongside Rhy Climenhage. This track is all about the sacred power found in embracing yourself and participating in an act of healing, guided by self love and harnessing agency. Just beautiful. (TW)

Razor Braids – ‘Nashville, Again’
Brooklyn-based Razor Braids are a queer, all-female/non-binary rock band who combine the vulnerable self-awareness of indie rock with dynamic instrumentation, anchored in a 90s ethos – just like us here at GIHE! This track is a fresh look at an old fave of theirs, the first song they ever released as a band! (TW)

Frankie Morrow – ‘Sunflowers’
Having released their debut EP, Blue Parrot Backpackers Hotel in October, Scottish band Frankie Morrow finally formed their current fully-fledged outfit last year after initially playing together and separately in various musical projects across Scotland since their teens. Personally, I can’t get enough of their glistening, folk-strewn sounds and heartfelt lyricism, and love the lilting grace of this track ‘Sunflowers’. (ML)

‘LINN – Okay, Sister’
Copenhagen DIY avant-pop artist LINN has released this tune with all its soothing tones and acoustic pluckings, highlighting the vulnerability in the lyrics. It’s taken from her upcoming EP, Femte Dimension, which is out now. Don’t forget to check out the video which was filmed by her 4 year old – amazing! (TW)

Prima Hera – ‘Sidecar’
This is the debut release from Prima Hera, the solo project of musician Stef Williamson. A track all about self-doubt, told through the perception of an imagined other, it’s just beautiful. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Prima Hera in 2023. (TW)

Poolblood – ‘voyager’
This woozy guitar tune from Toronto-based musician poolblood is a tender reflection on the conflicting feelings that come with moving on at the end of a relationship. It’s taken from her recent album, mole, which explores the highs & lows of romantic and platonic love. The songs on the record were influenced by the dynamic between Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix’s characters in Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, which is one of my favourite films! (KC)

Dog Park – ‘Sunny Decadence’
A bright, lo-fi indie pop tune, ‘Sunny Decadence’ is the debut single from Paris-based band Dog Park. Full of soft vocals and hazy guitar sounds, it’s a proper antidote to the January blues. (KC)

H.L Grail – ‘O.T.D’
Whilst you may be familiar with her from London icons Goat Girl, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Holly Mullineaux – aka H.L. Grail – has now announced the release of her debut EP. Taken from the EP, new single ‘OTD’ immerses the ears in a shimmering, celestial splendour as Mullineaux’s delicate vocals ripple beautifully with a whimsical allure. An exquisitely stirring lullaby. Deerhoof – ‘Sit Down, Let Me Tell You A Story’
Having just announced the release of their upcoming 19th (!) album in March, math-rock alumni Deerhoof have now shared an enticing taster with their brand new single. Sung entirely in Satomi’s native Japanese (as is the whole album), ‘Sit Down, Let Me Tell You A Story’ offers a frenzied, colourful cacophony as quirky honey-sweet vocals twinkle throughout the fuzzy soundscape. I’m super excited about the return of Deerhoof and can’t wait to hear Miracle Level, the new album, released on 31st March via Joyful Noise. (ML)

Ronnie Spector – ‘She Talks To Rainbows’
Hearing news of Ronnie Spector’s passing last week hit hard. A truly innovative musical icon, she inspired generations of women in music, whilst The Ronnettes were one of the first ‘girl groups’ to receive worldwide acclaim. Sadly also famous for being a survivor of serious physical and psychological abuse from her husband of six years, producer Phil Spector, I think it’s important we remember Ronnie for the incredible musical gifts she’s left us with. I just love the sparkling, soulful splendour and whimsical grace of this lesser known beauty, ‘She Talks To Rainbows’. (Mari Lane)

Bas Jan – ‘Sex Cult’
The latest single from London experimental collective Bas Jan (founded by Serafina Steer and featuring members of Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business and Jarv Is), ‘Sex Cult’ offers a glistening cacophony propelled by a quirky energy and captivating allure. Reflecting on society’s attitude towards polygamy, it radiates a celestial joy as crystalline voices come together in unity to create something quite euphoric. Baby You Know, the new album from Bas Jan, is out 28th January via Lost Map Records. (ML)

ML Buch – ‘I’m a Girl You can Hold IRL’
This song is taken from Danish electro-pop musician ML Buch’s album Skinned which came out in 2020, but I spent a lot of the winter break listening to it so thought I’d share it with you all in 2022. I love its futuristic techno electro tones and all the FEELINGS. (TW)

SEA CHANGE – ‘Is There Anybody There’
Created during a time of intense loneliness during the middle of lockdown, this atmospheric offering from Norwegian producer Sea Change gives me goosebumps. Blossoming from a place of empathy, it’s one of many evocative tunes that feature on her upcoming album, Mutual Dreaming, which is set for release on 11th February via Shapes Recordings. Brimheim – ‘This Week’s Laundry’
A stirring, intricately observed guitar tune about trying to cultivate a “normal” routine during a time of deep vulnerability, I love this single from Danish alt-pop artist Brimheim. Taken from her upcoming album, can’t hate myself into a different shape, which is set for release on 28th January via W.A.S Entertainment, the track flows with her tender vocals and confessional lyrics, which chime with relatable melancholy. I had the pleasure of interviewing Brimheim about her new record and her love for Queen Avril Lavigne earlier this month. Read our chat here. (KC)

Midwife – ‘2020’
This is a gloomy (but great) track about the year we’d all rather forget: 2020. Taken from Midwife aka Madeline Johnston’s third album Luminol, which was written & produced during quarantine last year, ‘2020’ is her cover of The Offspring’s 1997 track ‘Gone Away’, which I didn’t know until the person who recommended Midwife to me sent me a link to the original song. I know she’s been around a while, but I’m newly obsessed with this track & her album.  (KC)

Wu-Lu – ‘Times’
My new obsession, I recently came across South London multi-instrumentalist and producer Wu-Lu courtesy of Mary-Anne Hobbs on BBC 6Music. Creating a wonderfully eclectic smorgasbord of immense sounds, I just love how Wu-Lu manages to fuse together dark, Deftones-esque punk with a gritty, hip-hop inspired edge. I cannot stop listening to this track right now, which features drums by Black Midi’s Morgan Simpson. (ML)

Pearly – ‘Silver Behind The Mirror’
An agitated, sultry dose of cinematic heavy rock, I’m a big fan of this single by Ohio-based trio Pearly. Taken from their upcoming album Silver of The Mirror, which is set for release on 11th February via Eto Ano Recordings, the track is a smouldering slice of “stoner rock” that heaves with heady desire. SASAMI – ‘Say It’
This industrial-tinged “rage dance anthem” from SASAMI is 100% a bit of me. Taken from her upcoming album Squeeze, which is set for release on 25th February via Domino, SASAMI explains: “I feel like when I hear this song I see a hot femme with a mystical flamethrower engulfed in emotional blue flames throwing elbows alone in an industrial dance club in outer space.” Mate, same. HALINA RICE – ‘Sunken Suns’
What do I love more than dreamy songs full of feelings? The answer is obscure electronica! My latest listen comes from London-based artist Halina Rice, as part of a new project where she is embarking on creating new worlds in her music. Of this track Halina explains, “I wanted to create something dark and strange and emotive. The track emerged after days spent generating sounds through synths and noise generators. I put a mass of effects on the sampled vocals and they seemed to develop a life of their own – like a half-heard transmission from another world.” LOVE IT. (TW)

Gemini Aaliyah – ‘Moonrise’
Leeds-based artist Gemini Aaliyah says her single ‘Moonrise’ is the beginning of her “fucked up fairy tale where the ghetto meets the goth girl,” and that’s something I’d like to openly support. She channels her angst through yearning vocals and brooding beats, finding solace in the idea of re-birth and reinvention through her lyrics. Gemini Aaliyah will be playing at Drown U Out Festival at Leeds University Union on 19th February, alongside two of my other favourites Ho99o9 and Bob Vylan. (KC)

Queen Cult – ‘Calm’
Following acclaim from the likes of BBC Introducing for their debut single ‘Shindigger’ and support for their resonant latest single ‘A Song About Consent’, Queen Cult’s latest single ‘Calm’ flows with luscious, heartfelt vocals before building to a sweeping, fiercely impassioned proclamation to stand up to the patriarchy. Once again showcasing the Cheshire band’s knack for creating epic pop-rock anthems with a poignant sense of intent, ‘Calm’ cements Queen Cult’s place as definite ones to watch in 2022. The debut EP from Queen Cult is set for release on 28th January. (ML)

Peaness – ‘How I’m Feeling’
Having just announced the release of their debut album, Chester trio Peaness have shared a new taster of what’s to come from the LP. Propelled by uplifting, jangling hooks, latest single ‘How I’m Feeling’ reflects on the feelings of self-loathing and melancholy that can come from being stuck in an unfulfilling job and offers a glistening sense of hope that, with a bit of determination, you can make a positive change. I just can’t get enough of Peaness’ glossy, honey-sweet sounds and sunny, playful energy. World Full Of Worry, the debut album from Peaness, is set for release on 6th May. (ML)

SPRINTS – ‘Little Fix’
Another absolute banger from Dublin four-piece Sprints. Taken from their upcoming EP A Modern Job, which is set for release on 11th March via Nice Swan Records, ‘Little Fix’ is full of powerhouse vocals, crashing drums and racing riffs. The track is inspired by vocalist Karla Chubb’s experience of imposter syndrome, as she explains: “plagued by insecurities, imposter syndrome and gender stereotypes, ‘Little Fix’ is the culmination of all my fears – the, sometimes self-applied pressure that as a woman in music, I can’t just be good, I have to be great.” Even with these anxieties, Karla and her bandmates have created a candid, intensely cathartic offering with this track. Worse Off – ‘You Belong Here’
I love this track by excellently named New York pop punk duo Worse Off. They sent me their EP You Win Some, You Lose…A Lot, in December last year and I was headbanging away to their tunes at my desk. Definitely check them out, their EP is up on bandcamp and Spotify. (KC)

Tits Up – ‘Macho Bullshit’
Having released their debut EP Greatest Tits, at the beginning of the month, Liverpool band Tits Up are ready to blast into your lives with their immense riot grrrl inspired energy and unapologetic honesty raging against the patriarchal society in which we live. Fuelled by a frenzied punk spirit, ‘Macho Bullshit’ hits you with its riotous, angst-driven force, offering an empowering statement of intent. (ML)

Bitch – ‘You’re The Man’
Set to release her debut album next month, queer electro-pop artist Bitch prides herself on being “like Joni Mitchell set to a click track… It’s neon pink, in your face, ready to hex you with its brilliance.” Latest single ‘You’re The Man’ exudes a driving, gritty energy as sizzling synths race alongside dense drum-machine beats, creating an empowering reflection on letting go of negative forces and reclaiming your inner voice. Bitch’s perfectly named debut album Bitchcraft is set for release on 4th February via legendary label Kill Rock Stars. (ML)

Combo Chimbita – ‘Yo Me Lo Merezco’
The title of this warm, joyful track from New York-based Latinx quartet Combo Chimbita roughly translates as “I deserve it”. The track and accompanying video are a celebration of self-love, spot-lighting prominent queer and trans performance artists, including Teresa Karolina who stars in the visuals. ‘Yo Me Lo Merezco’ is taken from Combo Chimbita’s upcoming album, IRE, which is set for release on 28th January via ANTI. Flamango Bay – ‘LA’
The latest single from San Francisco trio Flamango Bay, ‘LA’ reflects on the band’s recent move to the city. Propelled by sunny, jangling melodies, it’s a dreamy slice of indie-pop that glistens with an irresistible, effervescent charm. The Fool, the upcoming debut EP from Flamango Bay, is set for release on 13th May via 0800-Moshi-Moshi. (ML)

Babeheaven – ‘Don’t Wake Me
This band never disappoint. ‘Don’t Wake Me’ is Babeheaven’s latest gently soothing release. Just lovely. (TW)

This is the latest single by South London rapper KEYAH/BLU who I would encourage you all to go and check out if you aren’t familiar with already. (TW)

Skylu – ‘Foreign Concept’
A tune for the stolen hours, this is the debut single from Skylu, whose voice you may recognise from Bamboo Smoke. (TW)

Lucy Barton – ‘Starlight’
The latest single from singer-songwriter Lucy Barton, ‘Starlight’ offers a sparkling reflection on gaining awareness of our self-crippling subconscious thoughts. With a subtle immersive power, the track speaks of breaking free from this internal narration, allowing us to discover the beauty that exists in life. I’m a big fan of Barton’s soaring, glitchy musicality and emotion-strewn honey-sweet vocals, and can’t wait to hear more from her. (ML)

Carmel Smickersgill – ‘Questioning’
The latest single from modern classical artist Carmel Smickersgill, ‘Questioning’ offers a truly captivating and uniquely intriguing soundscape. Mentored by acclaimed musician Anna Meredith, Smickersgill prides herself on creating immersive ‘outsider pop’, and I just love this track’s whirring grace and celestial, ethereal energy, reminiscent of GIHE fave Jenny Hval. Smickersgill is releasing her debut EP in April. (ML)

Novaa – ‘You Can F With Me’
‘You Can F With Me’ by Berlin based alt-pop singer-songwriter Novaa is taken from her forthcoming album due in early 2022. This is a song about the things that people asked and told her as a victim of sexual abuse and rape. Love and solidarity to anyone who relates to that track and remember that the best thing you can ever do for anyone who has been a victim, is to listen, be kind and give them space and support to heal. Zannie – ‘Mechanical Bull’
This is the latest single from New York-based songwriter Zannie, who’s recently signed to iconic riot grrrl label Kill Rock Stars. They remind me a little bit of Phoebe Bridgers on this track and I’m excited to hear more from them this year. (KC)
