WATCH: Tamar Aphek – ‘Russian Winter’

A brooding mix of distorted bass lines, cutting vocals and thumping beats, Israeli rocker Tamar Aphek‘s latest single ‘Russian Winter’ is a sonic force to be reckoned with. Taken from her upcoming album All Bets Are Off, set for release via Kill Rock Stars on 29th January, Aphek has shared a new video to accompany the beautiful, yet desolate track.

“‘Russian Winter’ is my first concept music video,” Aphek explains. “It was developed in a few stages. First, a visual translation of my personal feelings in light of the collapse of the frameworks and creative endeavours in which I was involved with before the coronavirus, hours of brainstorming with the director Amir Buxbaum on how to transform the ideas into a music video, and finally diving with the animator in a symbolic ocean of images. We are facing huge changes in our old familiar world – I wanted to include images like the cycle of the four seasons – hoping that by sticking to the common place it will help us move forward into the unknown world.”

Hailed as “Israel’s guitar goddess” by Timeout in Tel-Aviv, Aphek’s contemporary rock sounds mark her out as an exciting talent in the world of guitar music. The experienced instrumentalist produced her new record by herself, working alongside the mastering talents of Daniel Schlett (War on Drugs, DIIV) and Greg Calbi (John Lennon, Bob Dylan, David Bowie) to finalise her sound. ‘Russian Winter’ is the third single to be released from the album, showcasing Aphek’s ability to dismantle the world around her through commanding vocals and a cacophony of guitar noise.

Big Joanie sign to Kill Rock Stars & release 7″ single with Charmpit

Get In Her Ears are thrilled to share the news that Big Joanie have signed to iconic US riot grrrl label Kill Rock Stars! To mark the occasion, the trio will be releasing a 7″ split single with fellow feminist punks Charmpit titled Kluster Room Sessions, set for release on 27th November. Having both formed at First Timers Fest, Big Joanie and Charmpit have garnered a loyal and passionate following on the DIY underground scenes here in the UK. With this joint release on Kill Rock Stars, their punk infused sounds will be reaching wider, equally as passionate audiences in the US and beyond.

Kluster Room Sessions features an early recording of Big Joanie’s track ‘Cut Your Hair’ on the A side, and Charmpit’s single ‘Bad Attitude’ on the B side. “We leapt at the chance to do a split EP with Big Joanie because we love them,” explained Charmpit’s guitarist & vocalist Rhianydd YorkWilliams. “We’re so psyched to be working with Kill Rock Stars. They are a cool breeze to work with and we have so much love for what they do.”

After releasing their debut album Sistahs in 2018, Big Joanie are also planning to share their highly anticipated second record via Kill Rock Stars in 2021. “I grew up idolising practically every band on the Kill Rock Stars roster when I was a teenager,” explains Big Joanie’s guitarist & vocalist Stephanie Phillips. “We all have so much admiration for the work Kill Rock Stars has done and their influence on the punk scene. We’re so happy they can join us on this next journey of Big Joanie to help us reach new audiences.” Big Joanie’s 2021 second album will also be released in the UK and Europe via Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz’s label, Daydream Library Series.

LISTEN: MAITA – ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’

“We’re all goners”, Maria Maita-Keppeler joyfully sings on MAITA‘s latest single, ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’. Lifted from the band’s debut album Best Wishes, (set for release on 15th May via Kill Rock Stars), the track is a light-hearted musing on the inevitable, and relatable human fear of death.

Formed of Maita-Keppeler (principle songwriter, guitars), Matthew Zeltzer (electric guitar), Nevada Sowle (bass), and Cooper Trail (piano/drums); Portland-based MAITA caught our attention with their tenderly frustrated sounds on single ‘Can’t Blame A Kid’ earlier this year. On new track ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’, the band cover a dark subject with buoyant guitar riffs and an energetic, catchy chorus.

Maita-Keppeler explains the context of the new single further: ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’ was inspired by my experience with college parties. Every weekend at some grimy house filled with young, drunk people, I would have that moment late at night where I stared into the crowd and remembered that death was waiting for all of us, regardless of how alive we felt. In those moments, everything would suddenly seem insignificant, and we became so naive and small. I wanted to hide the gravity of this truth within a song that felt vibrant and full of life, just as these dark truths were hidden for me within nights of intoxicated revelry. The song carries a different weight for me today, in the midst of this new Covid reality, where the dark truth seems more exposed than ever, and the quest for joy feels more urgent, almost desperate.”

Track Of The Day: MAITA – ‘A Beast’

A poignant, under-stated guitar ode to the difficulty and desperation that comes with heartbreak; Portland-based MAITA has shared their latest single, ‘A Beast’. Taken from their upcoming album Best Wishes, set for release on 3rd April via Kill Rock Stars, the track is a relatable, melancholy-tinged exploration of being able to forgive, but not forget.

Speaking about the track’s premise, songwriter Maria Maita-Keppeler explains: “’A Beast’ [is] a musing on the pain that one person is capable of causing another, and the endless potential for forgiveness that exists within that space. That forgiveness always comes with a price, however: the memory of it that we carry beneath our skin, as does the abused dog that flinches when you lift a hand to pet it.”

MAITA’s willingness to confront emotional uncertainty is what makes ‘A Beast’ such a compelling listen. The accompanying video also reflects the pain and isolation that underscores the track. Maria offers her thoughts on the setting for the visuals: “It was inspired by [the place] where I wrote the song, which was at an old studio apartment in Portland. Though spacious for a studio, [it] had the potential to feel claustrophobic and lonely at the same time, transforming into a hot-bed for creative angst and pining. I wanted the video to take place in a similar setting: an empty apartment to serve as a backdrop for the many stages of waiting- – the tenderness, the frustration, the desperation.”
