WATCH: Majken – ‘Lovely Daughter’

Tentative, soft-focused, colourful visuals form the new video for Swedish songwriter Majken‘s single ‘Lovely Daughter’. The track is taken from her upcoming debut album, set to be released this Autumn via Kollektivet Records.

Directed and shot by Amanda Davies, Majken says the footage for ‘Lovely Daughter’ is “conceptual but still intimate and self-revealing” – a perfect reflection of the Malmo-based musician’s songwriting style. Majken has been writing songs since the age of 14 and has a clear intuition for delicate, tender sounds with “sad and sloppy guitar”.

Her debut album was recorded at her home with Damon Tutunjian (Mew, Swirlies), who appreciates lo-fi recordings, 70’s synthesisers and MIDI harp as much as she does. WATCH: Death Valley Girls – ‘Disaster (Is What We’re After)’

Fans of Iggy Pop are going to approve of Death Valley Girls‘ new video for their latest single, ‘Disaster (Is What We’re After)’. The Los Angeles “doom boogie/dystopian punk/occult glam rockers” have shared the visuals featuring the icon, alongside the news they’ll be releasing their third studio album, Darkness Rains, on October 5th via Suicide Squeeze.

The ‘Disaster (Is What We’re After)’ video, directed by Kansas Bowling and shot on 16mm film, is a recreation of the famous Andy Warhol Eating a Hamburger short film, but starring Iggy Pop, eating a burger, listening to Death Valley Girls (which he proudly proclaims at the end).

“We’re strong believers in opti-mysticism and connecting with people through rock n’ roll” Death Valley Girls say of their collaboration with Iggy. “Having Iggy dig our music was more than amazing for us. When Kansas told us she had a dream about recreating the ‘Andy Warhol Eating a Hamburger’ short film but with Iggy starring for our music video, we were cautiously excited about the possibility. Next thing we know we’re in Miami with Iggy himself, and a rock n’ roll dream became reality!”

Death Valley Girls consists of vocalist & multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel, as well as a plethora of like-minded compatriots who can fit their lives around the band’s relentless touring schedule (and in the back of the van). On their third album Darkness Rains, they’re joined by bassist Alana Amram, drummer Laura Harris, and guests like Shannon Lay, The Kid (Laura Kelsey), members of The Make Up, The Shivas, and Moaning.

On their latest single, thundering bass lines and riotous guitar riffs combine to beckon disaster in classic rock style. It reflects the band’s ethos perfectly: “Embrace the darkness and don’t fear the Reaper”. WATCH: Gazelle Twin – ‘Hobby Horse’

A unique artist with razor sharp creativity: Gazelle Twin (aka Elizabeth Bernholz) combines glitchy beats, menacing samples and an uncanny costume in the visuals for single ‘Hobby Horse’. It’s the first track from her forthcoming album, Pastoral, set to be released via her own label Anti-Ghost Moon Ray on 21st September.

The video, directed by long-time collaborator Chris Turner, fearlessly displays the themes of the new record; on which Bernholz “exhumes England’s rotten past” whilst simultaneously bringing “its ever-darkening present into focus”. Her costume – Morris-dancer-meets-football-hooligan – is striking enough, but when paired with Turner’s creative use of lighting, slow-mo and close-ups; the visuals become an enticing but nerve-shredding affair.

Speaking about the new video, Bernholz says: “‘Hobby Horse’ is yet another fun-but-deranged experiment in an ever-growing catalogue of collaborations with director Chris Turner. We have a mutual appreciation for the uncanny – especially the kind tinged with a bit of ultra-violence. It’s great working with someone who knows how to capitalise on every kind of “weird” there is, yet still managing to keep performance at the core”.

Gazelle Twin has been forming her own brand of “weird” since the release of her debut album, The Entire City, in 2001. She released her sophomore record Unflesh in 2014 to critical acclaim, and between Motherhood and curating another two atmospheric records (2016’s Out Of Body & 2017’s audio/visual project Kingdom Come), she’s now ready to release the highly anticipated Pastoral – which she debuted live at Supersonic festival earlier this year.

Alongside the release of the ‘Hobby Horse’ video, Gazelle Twin has announced a string of live dates, including a performance at Rough Trade East on Thursday 27th September. Track Of The Day: Sit Down – ‘Mothership’

Inspired by their love of sci-fi & Route 66: Brighton-based duo Sit Down have shared a video for their single ‘Mothership’. Filmed entirely on VHS by the band during an American road-trip, the visuals show the pair frequenting highways and diners as their thunderous single plays on in the background.

The video has been released alongside the the exciting announcement that they will play Reading and Leeds Festivals this year for BBC Introducing. Taken from their recent debut EP Cheap Luxe, ‘Mothership’ is a blur of aliens and autonomy, as drumming front woman Katie Oldham explains: “There’s an undeniably feminist message behind it, like there is with the majority of our songs. It’s mostly about growing into womanhood, but also just loving the idea of this huge all-powerful alien queen invading earth to save us from horrible men.”

The band are keen to keep things DIY too, as Guitarist Greg Burns adds: “The decision to film ‘Mothership’ on VHS was not just purely for the aesthetic, it also embodies exactly what we stand for with Cheap Luxe, the namesake of our EP. To us, Cheap Luxe is embracing the crude, ramshackle reality of life in a world so obsessed with projecting perfection. It’s about this real, gritty rawness that’s so much more fun than taking yourself seriously. Doing everything DIY is important to us, and there was something so magic about working so hard to go on this once in a lifetime adventure and film this thing, which we could only then afford to do on an old camcorder we got for a few quid at a car boot sale. It’s perfect.”
