Track Of The Day: deep tan – ‘camelot’

Following the bewitching sounds of last year’s poignant ‘deep fake’ and with acclaim from the likes of So Young, NME, The Quietus and BBC 6Music, Hackney-based trio deep tan have now announced the release of their debut EP.

Taken from the EP, the band have now shared new single ‘camelot’. Propelled by the majestic whirr of sparse hooks and throbbing beats, it builds with a quirky hypnotic splendour and fizzing tension, with shades of the playful jangle-fuzz of the likes of Stereo Total. Conjuring memories of heavy nights out in dingy music venues that we’re all missing so much right now, as swooning vocals glide across the angular soundscape, ‘camelot’ creates an eerily infectious offering; another truly captivating sonic cacophony from the post-punk trio that will leave you longing for more of their exquisite stirring allure.

Of the track, the band explain:

‘camelot’ is an unashamed tribute to ‘the sesh’. a group of people have just been evicted with only 48hrs notice, leading them to have one last rager in order to forget about the stress of not finding a new home with such short notice. coming in at less than two minutes, the frenetic energy of the track sets the scene for total obliteration…

‘camelot’ is accompanied by a home-made video – a ‘visualisation of 21st June’ featuring footage from parties, weddings and raves. Watch now!

‘camelot’ is out now, listen on Spotify. And deep tan’s debut EP, creeping speedwells, is set for release on 4th June.

WATCH: Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business – ‘Woman Is A Word’

Originally from Canada and now based in East London, Jenny Moore has played in bands such as Charismatic Megafauna and Bas Jan, and has now shared a brand new single from her six-piece choral punk ensemble Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business. Featuring members of Trash Kit, F*Choir and Bamboo, the ensemble have received acclaim from the likes of Steve LaMacq on BBC 6Music for last year’s stirring ‘I Am Afraid’ and have now announced the release of a debut EP, set for release this Summer.

A cover of Empress Of’s ‘Woman Is A Word’, this latest offering highlights the power of voices coming together in unity. Oozing a sweeping, celestial splendour, the many vocals flow together in harmony creating a captivating soundscape, propelled by an upbeat, jazz-infused musicality. Adding their own unique euphoric energy to the poignant sentiment and soulful passion of the original, Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business have created an emotive and empowering rendition.

Of her inspiration to cover ‘Woman Is A Word’, Jenny explains:

“I’m always hunting for mantras, earworms and hooks that I can drench my vocal chords in, making sure there are powerful phrases locked in my muscle memory… When I’m up against power dynamics that try to reinforce boring tropes of gender or undermine my own self-knowledge, I need a groove to settle into that reminds me ‘I’m only an image of what you see.’ Empress Of’s song offered me that groove and I felt compelled to rearrange her song as a way of meditating. Covering this song felt like an act of building resilience for those moments when I feel like I just don’t know how to fight anymore… I often think about how vast our experiences of both gender and desire could be if we acted like all humans deserve dignity, freedom to self-determine, and to be the boss of their own bodies! This tune acts as a kind of escape from the dominant narratives that try to control everyone for the sake of the status quo…”

‘Woman Is A Word’ is accompanied by a beautifully hand-crafted video highlighting the subtle power of the voices of the track, featuring footage of all of Mystic Business in the their separate respective homes, coming together through the power of song. Watch now:

Woman Is A Word‘ is out now via Lost Map, available to download from bandcamp.

Track Of The Day: Maja Lena – ‘Birch’

Formally of the band Low Chimes, Marianne Parrish – aka Maja Lena – has now announced her debut solo album, set for release this summer.

Taken from the album, new single ‘Birch’ offers a truly captivating alt-folk soundscape. Reflecting on new beginnings and oozing a pastoral elegance, it’s propelled by resplendent vocals and a luscious shimmering musicality, with shades of the likes of Rozi Plain. With a majestic, ethereal grace, sweeping soothing melodies are interwoven with exquisitely put-together layers of twinkling instrumentation, creating a bewitching sonic gem. Of the track, Maja Lena explains:

“‘Birch’ is a song about feeling vulnerable yet elated. About starting a new phase of life and love, yet also knowing that this elation could be snatched away at any given moment. The Birch tree here is a symbol for this feeling, and its branches moving in the wind resemble a feeling of freedom and excitement.”

‘Birch’ is accompanied by a beautifully made video, filmed entirely on Super 8 in the Lake District, with Martha Webb. Watch here:

Birch‘ is out now, and The Keeper – the upcoming album from Maja Lena – is set for release 23rd July via Chiverin Records.

WATCH: L.A. Witch – ‘Motorcycle Boy’

Following last summer’s album Play With Fire, Californian punk trio L.A. Witch are sharing the deliciously noir visuals for album highlight ‘Motorcycle Boy’.

The track quite literally revs into existence. A rapturous statement of confidence, a combination of dynamic guitar solos and marching drum beats, anchored together by Sanchez’s sultry vocal. The video combines two of lead singer Sade Sanchez’s main passions, motorbikes and guitars, and is steeped in a type of hazy vintage nostalgia that has become synonymous with the band. Speaking about the video, L.A. Witch singer & guitarist Sade Sanchez explains:

“The song is inspired by Moto Boys like Mickey Rourke, Marlon Brando, and Steve McQueen, so of course we took a lot of inspiration from our favorite biker movies like The Wild One, Rumble Fish, On any Sunday, Easy Rider, Hells Angeles ’69 and The Girl on a Motorcycle. I had worked with (director) Ambar Navarro and Max on another project and loved their other work, so we wanted to work with them on this. They definitely did their homework and came up with a cool story line. I got to feature my bike that I’d been rebuilding during the pandemic. It was nice to shoot a video where you get to do two of your favorite things, riding motorcycles and play guitar.”

Play With Fire, the latest album from L.A. Witch, is out now via Suicide Squeeze Records.
