Track Of The Day: Charmpit – ‘Bridges Go Burn’

London DIY band Charmpit have indeed been charming our ears, and our hearts, for some time; having wowed us with their energy-filled charisma live on more than one occasion, and following the joyous sounds of their Jelly EP, they’ve now announced the release of their debut album, out next year via Specialist Subject Records.

Taken from the album, new single ‘Bridges Go Burn’ is filled with all the sparkling fuzz, jangly, shimmering hooks and luscious honey-sweet harmonies we’ve come to know and love. An empowering ode to moving on from toxic relationships and standing up for yourself, it’s a perfectly uplifting, luminous slice of ‘Anarcutie’ pop-punk to soundtrack this week’s anxiety…

Of the track, the band explain:

“We grew up in the 90s and 00s surrounded by examples in books/movies/songs of falling in romantic love and breaking up. Pop culture offered us so many blueprints for romantic relationships and comparatively few about other loving relationships. But in our experience, ending friendships, or being estranged from family, was heartbreaking, often more heartbreaking than our romantic breakups. We wanted to contribute a breakup song about friendship and family heartbreak to pop culture. It can take time to burn a bridge, especially when it’s guarded by a troll. You can forgive yourself for taking the time you needed to exit that toxic relationship. And when you exit it, you can write a pop banger so it ain’t so dang depressing. Strike a match, light it up, better bitter than deep fried!”

WATCH: Nadia Javed – ‘I Hate Boris’

We’ve been massive fans of three-tone band The Tuts for a few years now (who have recently supported ska legends The Specials), and so it’s great to see Nadia Javed from the band release her first solo single. And there really couldn’t be a better time for it.

Having been admirably active and vocal with her opinions about Thursday’s upcoming election, even taking part in her local town’s FCK BORIS march, Javed’s perfectly entitled ‘I Hate Boris’ is the pop-punk anthem we all need this week. Reflecting not only on how much she hates the undeniably racist Boris Johnson, but also addressing “the phenomena of brown tories like Sajid Javid and Priti Patel”, and how they do not represent her, the track juxtaposes Nadia’s honey-sweet vocals and twinkling uptempo melodies with the stark realism and searing honesty of the lyrics. 

Combining impassioned activism with an infectious musicality – giving a sparkling voice to how so many of us are feeling right now – with ‘I Hate Boris’ Nadia Javed inspires and motivates us to get up, make our voices heard and fight the right with all our might.

Track Of The Day: Sink Ya Teeth – ‘The Hot House’

Having just announced the release of their upcoming second album, GIHE faves Maria Uzor and Gemma Cullingford – aka Sink Ya Teeth – have now shared an infectious new single.

Fusing together melancholia and deep house, ‘The Hot House’ is filled with the Norwich duo’s trademark, funk-filled groove. Propelled by an immense, cow-bell driven energy and propulsive beats, alongside Uzor’s soaring, sultry vocals, it’s a truly addictive, and wonderfully danceable, anthem about coming together during troubled times. Uplifting and necessary listening at a time when we need it the most.

Of the track, Uzor expands:

 “There’s a lot of polarisation in the world at the moment. The lyrics are about striving for unity in the face of this division. And having a good time while we do it. We’ve all got so much more in common than we think we have. Let’s just have a dance ffs!”

WATCH: The Gravity Drive – ‘Hits Like A Fix’

The Gravity Drive are a harmony driven, alternative pop band led by Elijah and Ava Wolf. Having received support and frequent radio plays from Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing, they independently release records on their own label from their house near Bridport in Dorset. 

The new single and ’60s inspired video, ‘Hits like a Fix’ is a piano-led pop ballad with Ava taking the lead vocals. Opening with slow, wistful keys, Ava’s seductive voice comes in with a sense of underlying drama: “I made the call, you called the sting”.

With a sense of something magnetic happening between the song’s characters, the chorus is more uptempo, with light percussion and delicate mixing adding to the emotional elements. The second verse intensifies, however, oozing a fervent passion: “we lost our freedom to the fever again… You’re the remedy that helps me forget.”

Both the song and video are beautifully cinematic, suggesting the chemistry of fated love. Like a pull of gravity, it will draw you in, giving you much to anticipate from the band’s upcoming second album, The Wildlight, due for release in 2020.

‘Hits Like A Fix’ is out now on all digital platforms.
