Track Of The Day: Aisha Badru – ‘Bridges’

As the new year dawns bright, New York singer-songwriter Aisha Badru’s first UK single ‘Bridges’, and its accompanying video, are a great start.

‘Bridges’ has a lush, enveloping sound; featuring Aisha’s soft, soothing vocals like sparkling ripples on water. It is a positive song, offering hope in a powerfully subtle way, as it explores the persistence required in relationships. It’s a song about not giving in, despite differences – “There’ll be oceans for us to tread, There’ll be bridges for us to mend, But I’ll stick to it”.

The delicate voice and lyrics blend folk and electronica with violins and piano keys in a beautiful orchestration of feeling, making the listener stop and absorb the lyrics and message: a universal one of unwavering love despite the obstacles – “We were worlds apart, so I fell from the stars, I travelled long and I travelled far.” A song that begins with lyrics as beautiful as these will capture your heart, and start a quiet revolution. Often the greatest obstacle that we face is ourselves, and this song offers transcendence of limitations.

WATCH: The Orielles – ‘Let Your Dogtooth Grow’

Following a year wowing crowds at festivals such as Green Man and Truck, and selling out venues including The Lexington, Get In Her Ears favourites The Orielles have now announced the release of their debut album, and we couldn’t be more excited!

The album will be entitled Silver Dollar Moment. Guitarist Henry explains of the name:

“It’s anything that’s unexpectedly brilliant… We played in Toronto, at this bar called the Silver Dollar Room. We’d been in Canada for 36 hours, no sleep, we’d already played at 10, then we played a show at the Silver Dollar at 2am and it was one of the best shows we’ve played. So a silver dollar moment became anything that’s good, but unexpectedly.”

To accompany the fantastic news, the band have shared a new video for their latest single. ‘Let Your Dogtooth Grow’ flows seamlessly with clattering percussion, jangly melodies and Esmé’s trademark woozy vocals. Including some perhaps more conventionally catchy hooks than previous creations, the track builds in intensity with an anthemic majesty as Henry’s whirring guitars and Sid’s impeccable time-keeping succeed in keeping to the band’s own distinctive, unique fusion of sounds.

WATCH: Dream Nails – ‘Tourist’

To celebrate the release of their new Dare To Care EP, GIHE faves Dream Nails have shared a brand new video for their latest single ‘Tourist’.

A racing, punk-fuelled offering, packing a punch with its seething, fist-clenching force, ‘Tourist’ was written about emotionally predatory men who are drawn to women when they’re vulnerable. Propelled by guitarist Anya’s truly infectious riffs, pounding beats and front woman Janey’s buoyant energy and impassioned vocals, it’s another sparkling, energy-filled offering from the band.

Charting a girls’ day out to the seaside with a retro tinge, the video sees the band having fun at Margate seafront, dancing on the promenade and generally giving zero fucks to what anyone might think. Filmed and directed by an all female crew, it highlights the band’s ethos of ‘fries before guys’, and oozes all the joy-filled, empowering charm from our favourite Feminist Punk Witches.

‘Tourist’ is yet another example of why we need Dream Nails in our lives; at times like this, we need bands like them more than ever – a group willing to combine activism and music to form a unifying force against the patriarchy. A band who continue to inspire and motivate girls everywhere to get to the front and make our voices heard.

Dare To Care, the new EP from Dream Nails, is out now.

Premiere: The Wild Things – ‘Loaded Gun’ (Behind The Scenes)

Having received acclaim from the likes of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Amazing Radio, West London band The Wild Things have also achieved success touring the US and have been featured as BBC London’s ‘featured artist of the week’. Now, having built a reputation for their energy-fuelled live shows and their very own ‘Wild Things Bawl’ live nights, they are back with a brand new video. And we get to have an exclusive peek behind the scenes of its creation…

Directed by Marcus Maschwitz, who has worked with Fall Out Boy, Bring Me The Horizon and 30 Seconds To Mars, the video for ‘Loaded Gun’ contains stylish black and white footage of Sydney, Cameron, Rob and Pete preparing to unleash another impassioned slice of infectious indie-rock to our ears and eyes.

With the exclusive behind the scenes footage containing snippets of the pulsating beats, throbbing hooks and rich, raw grit of Sydney’s vocals to be found in the powerful new single, we cannot wait to see the final cut very soon!

Of the track, Sydney explains:

“‘Loaded Gun’ started in our studio with a simple riff. Every time Cam played it, I heard the phrase Loaded Gun over and over. It felt too badass and too fun not to roll with, so we worked on bringing each section of the track back to that motif. The mental image of it is so striking that it really informed the direction of the track. It quickly became our live set highlight and hasn’t been out of the setlist since! It’s so exciting to come on and bust it out because you know immediately everyone’s gonna sit up and pay attention.

‘Loaded Gun’ is out 17th November, and you can watch the exclusive behind the scenes video here:

Catch The Wild Things live at Power Of Solace’s Rock Against Violence event on 16th November.
