LISTEN: ALT BLK ERA – ‘I’m Normally Like This’

Embracing the power of their individuality and refusing to let the opinions of others impact the way they express themselves, genre-defying sister duo ALT BLK ERA have shared their latest single ‘I’m Normally Like This’. Fuelled by their antagonistic and joyful spirit, the track is a cathartic rage-dance anthem that celebrates the freedom that comes with championing your own creativity in alternative music scenes and beyond.

Formed of sisters Nyrobi and Chaya, ALT BLK ERA create tenacious alternative anthems designed to showcase their vivid personalities. Inspired by the likes of Ho99o9, Nova Twins, Hacktivist, The Prodigy and Billie Eilish, they blur the boundaries of pop punk, nu-metal, rap and electronic music to form their riotous sounds. Refusing to be pigeonholed, the pair splice these genres together to explore and vent their frustrations about life, and new single ‘I’m Normally Like This’ does exactly that. “I don’t give a damn if you like it / I’m normally like this!” they chant, over a backdrop of jagged electronics and dense dance-inspired beats. Their defiant vocals hammer home the message that being yourself is the best way to push back against the haters and the gatekeepers.

ALT BLK ERA have a busy summer of live performances ahead of them. They’ll be playing Glastonbury Festival on the Shangri-La Truth Stage on 23rd June, plus the band will be playing as main support for our GIHE summer gig with STRAIGHT GIRL at The Shacklewell Arms on Friday 7th July! NEW TRACK: ALT BLK ERA – ‘Rockstar: LUNAR’

After sharing their blistering nu-metal inspired track ‘Rockstar’ at the end of last year, genre-defying sister duo ALT BLK ERA are showcasing their softer side on latest single ‘Rockstar: LUNAR’. Beautifully contrasting with the band’s usual visceral, heavy sound, ‘Rockstar: LUNAR’ is an earnest reflection on an unhealthy relationship, gently edging listeners towards acceptance and finding strength in their vulnerability.

Formed of sisters Nyrobi and Chaya, ALT BLK ERA create tenacious alternative anthems designed to express their vivid personalities. Inspired by the likes of Ho99o9, Nova Twins, Hacktivist and Billie Eilish, they blur the boundaries of punk, nu-metal and trap to form their riotous, anthemic sounds. Refusing to be pigeonholed, ALT BLK ERA enjoy exploring their musical dynamic further by releasing ‘SOLAR’ and ‘LUNAR’ versions of their songs. Nyrobi’s Solar energy represents her wild, raucous spirit, and Chaya’s calmer, more introverted energy is represented by Lunar.

Their original single ‘Rockstar’ was a volatile, all-consuming wall of noise, but on ‘Rockstar: LUNAR’, the duo filter the heaviness of romantic infatuation through a different lens. Full of tender vocals, evocative piano sounds and confessional lyrics, the track is a poignant rumination on an emotionally harmful relationship. The pair find solace in opening up about the difficult reality of loving someone who is bad for you, and have showcased their impressive, seamless ability to move between music genres in the process.

Track Of The Day: Miss Kill – ‘All You Gotta Do’

A gritty guitar tune inspired by feelings of risk and vulnerability, Bristol-based sister duo Miss Kill have shared their latest single ‘All You Gotta Do’. Taken from their upcoming debut EP, Don’t Tell Me Twice, which is set for release on 16th September via AWAL, the track seethes with a heavy sense of angst.

Formed of sisters Alannah and Felicity Jackson, Miss Kill are inspired by the sounds of Hole, Placebo, Nirvana and The Vines. The pair have supported GIHE favourites ARXX, Mannequin Death Squad and Grandmas House on tour, as well as playing shows with the likes of Krooked Tongue, Millie Manders and the Shutup, The Courettes, Giant Sky and Hands Off Gretel. Together, the duo blend the best elements of grunge and garage rock to create their urgent, melodic sounds, with latest single ‘All You Gotta Do’ being a bold combination of both.

Described as a song about “feeling completely intoxicated, vulnerable and needing someone to to care, but they are refusing to,” ‘All You Gotta Do’ is full of bittersweet vocals and heavy reverb, reflecting the clouded head space that inspired it. From the track’s snaking opening riff to the swirling, crashing chorus, it feels like an exasperated plea for help when you’re struggling to see through the murky waters of inebriety.

A collection of tracks that the band say are an “ode to raw feelings and insecurities,” Miss Kill’s upcoming EP, Don’t Tell Me Twice, looks set to be a candid exploration of the fragmented thoughts that formed it.
