Track Of The Day: Zoey Lily (feat. Indigo Svn) – ‘Not There’

I’ve been a strong fan of Zoey Lily and everything she’s put out from the moment she popped into our inbox in 2015. Her music always delivers with its electro beats, catchy melodies and Zoey’s distinctive vocals. ‘Not There’ feat. Indigo Svn is no different. With her last single ‘Last Goodbye’ only released last month, she’s back already with her next release. And if there all as good as this… Then keep ’em coming Zoey!

‘Not There’ features American rapper Indigo Svn – him and Zoey were first brought together when she attended one of his shows in North London. The track defies the physical odds of living on the other side of the planet by recording the track within a day and Indigo SVN sending his contributions from his Brooklyn bedroom studio all the way over to the UK. Of the track Indigo SVN says, “In my eyes the project was the dominos falling in the most seamless way. I was in a great reflective mode when the song was brought to my ears and it was the therapy I needed, she helped me step out of my box a bit more too which is alway great when bringing new music to the people.”

I’m continually entranced by Zoey Lily’s hushed and at times haunting vocals and, combined with Indigo SVN on this track, I think it makes for a perfect union.

Track Of The Day: Tigercats – ‘Candy’s Tailor’

Three years since the release of the critically-acclaimed Mysteries, Tigercats have returned with their much-anticipated third album Pig City.

Taken from the album is latest single ‘Candy’s Tailor’. Filled with twinkling, jangly melodies and uptempo, calypso-like beats, it flows with raw vocals and rich layers of sound, creating an utterly uplifting summer anthem.

Inspired by the band’s anger at the incessant gentrification of East London as developers close in on the studio they call home, Pig City offers a broadening of the band’s pop influences, expanding into highlife, afrobeat, and scuzzy West African psych.

Pig City is out now via Spanish label El Segell del Primavera. Catch Tigercats live at the following dates:

3rd June – Primavera Festival, Barcelona
23rd June – Not A Cult Festival, Malvern
29th July – Indietracks Festival, Derbyshire

Track Of The Day: Slowcoaches – ‘Found Down’

A band after our own hearts, having shouted back against the injustice of harassment and toxic masculinity in the music industry on last year’s ‘Complex’, Slowcoaches continue their biting social commentary with new single ‘Found Down’.

Racing with a seething energy, ‘Found Down’ hits your ears with its scuzzy riffs and the raw, angst-driven vocals of Heather Perkins. Oozing an immense, punk-fuelled power, it’s a perfect blast of raging honesty that we need now more than ever.

Of the track, Perkins explains:

It’s about how the ‘struggle’ of the artist is glamorised by mainstream labels via the media in order to sell records… And it’s about how mundane and frustrating the day-to-day reality of that struggle can actually be, whether that’s mental, financial or something else.”

‘Found Down’ will be released as a 7″, backed by Misfits’ cover ‘Skulls’ on the B-side. Catch Slowcoaches live at the following dates:

27th May – UK @ Raw Power Festival, London
5th June – Green Door Store, Brighton
21st June – Chunk, Leeds
23rd June – Delicious Clam, Sheffied

Track Of The Day: Ishani – ‘Insomnia’

Following powerful releases such as ‘Don’t Stop The Fight’, which centred on the horrific social effects of rape, Ishani has returned to immerse our ears in her captivating sounds with new single ‘Insomnia’.

An ode to the one in three of us who suffer with the condition, ‘Insomnia’ flows with Ishani’s soulful vocals set alongside glitchy beats and ethereal, whirring hooks. With shades of the likes of Massive Attack or Grimes, it oozes an exquisite, ambient musicality, creating a truly spellbinding and instantly infectious majestic soundscape.

Of the track, Ishani explains:

“[It’s] a love song to all of those sleepless people up all night, trapped in their sheets…”
