PREMIERE: Hari Debi – ‘Sick’

An angst-fueled attempt to process feelings of self-loathing and entitlement, London trio Hari Debi have shared their new single ‘Sick’ today!

Formed of Maddy (vocals), Mark (guitar), and Luis (drums), Hari Debi began making music together in 2018. The band are influenced by the eclectic sounds of Nick Cave, Alanis Morissette, and Queens Of The Stoneage, and aim to create heavy music that flows in a similar vein

New single ‘Sick’ is the result of their time spent together, and it’s four minutes of moody vocals, dense guitar riffs and crashing percussion. The lyrics flesh out the frustration that comes with feeling like you’re not being valued, whilst the noises behind them provide a cathartic backdrop to cut loose to.

PREMIERE: Ailsa Tully – ‘Highly Strung’

Brooding guitars and intuitive vocals permeate London based indie/folk artist Ailsa Tully‘s new single ‘Highly Strung’. Released via Skivvy Records – which Ailsa runs herself – the track is a dreamy exploration of the anxieties surrounding time and space.

Fusing choral elements with a lo-fi grunge attitude, ‘Highly Strung’ is accompanied by a music video inspired by the lyrics in Ailsa’s song. The washing line featured in the visuals is reflective of the lyric “I am just highly strung, out on the line’, and nods towards an exploration of gender roles, (i.e hanging washing out) as well as Ailsa’s own state of mind.

PREMIERE: Kianja – ‘There’s Nothing More’

Sincere lyrics, heartfelt vocals and an understated power permeate British multi-instrumentalist Kianja‘s new single ‘There’s Nothing More’. Released via Best Laid Plans, the 20 year-old artist has demonstrated her ability to create beautiful soul-pop sounds on this latest release.

“It’s about longing for love that you can’t fix,” Kianja explains, “It’s gone, but you constantly wish you could repair it”. She wrote the song originally when she was 14, but has since reworked it and collaborated with Dan Smith (Bastille) and producers Mark Crew and Dan Priddy (Rag’n’Bone Man, James Arthur) in order to fully develop the track.

Born and raised in north-east London, Kianja moved to Durban in South Africa as a teenager. There, she experienced a totally different way of life, before moving back to London again in recent years. “Moving to South Africa gave me a shift in perspective. education is a focal point there and I went to two solid schools. I got a music scholarship for a private school. I’ve experienced two very different worlds, which I feel feeds into my creativity”

PREMIERE: Mesadorm – ‘When She’s in That Mood’

A gentle, evocative, charming listen; Mesadorm have shared their new single ‘When She’s in That Mood’ ahead of its official release via Babylegs Records on 29th March. The track is taken from the band’s upcoming acoustic album Epicadus, which will be released on 19th April.

The new LP was recorded live in Eype Church, Bridport, where PJ Harvey recorded Let England Shake. It features re-imagined songs from the band’s 2018 album Heterogaster and new compositions arranged for acoustic instruments.

Frontwoman Blythe was inspired to write ‘When She’s in That Mood’ after leaving her previous band Vaults in 2017. The song’s composition prompted her to think of a particular musical moment in Michael Nyman’s piece ‘The Mood That Passes Through You’ – written for Jane Campion’s award-winning 1993 film, The Piano.

Speaking about the track, Blythe explains: “After a few transcendental days holed up overlooking the Dorset coast and walking seaweed beaches in February 2017, my then boyfriend Tom jammed some chords on his guitar and I sang some lyrics I’d penned about my experience there. I later translated his guitar chords to my piano to develop it into a more complete accompaniment part…”

“The New Zealand coastline and atmosphere in that heady film, the Dorset coastline and the East Anglian coastline of my upbringing fused together in my mind as I wrote about the paradox of ‘choosing’ to evaporate the self in sex and love. I also reference a good friend of mine who inspired me with her spirit of surrender in this way – she, my muse, is dancing while I sing”
