ALBUM: Brix & The Extricated – ‘Breaking State’

Following the success of their debut Part 2 last September, post-punk super-group Brix & The Extricated have just released their new album Breaking State. Having relentlessly toured and performed at numerous festivals over the last year, they’ve now returned with this latest release – pushing sonic boundaries, showcasing their vast artistic intentions and front-woman Brix Smith-Start’s incredible songwriting talent.

An eclectic collection of sounds, Breaking State is introduced to our ears by the sweeping, discordant strings (arranged by Sarah Brandwood-Spencer) and eerie power of opening track ‘Alaska’. As the thunderous bass lines of Steve Hanley kick in, pounding beats provide the backdrop to Smith-Start’s distinctive soaring drawl, which captivates with its immense, ferocious power. Continuing in the same vein, ‘HC’ and ‘Dog Face’ provide perfect blasts of post-punk power, with swirling Fall-reminiscent guitars and spiky bass, alongside gritty vocals and an immediate, frenetic energy.

Combining catchy surf-rock hooks with a raw vocal delivery, lead single ‘Prime Numbers’ “… is about about sacred geometry and mathematics as the language of the universe. Non physical consciousness and chaos magic…”, before we’re greeted by an interlude from the punk-driven force in the two following tracks which signal a slight change in tone. With a sweeping musicality, ‘Heavy Skies’ interweaves layers of strings, guitars and a steady pulse, flowing with twinkling emotion-strewn melodies as it builds to a luscious cinematic soundscape. Likewise, ‘Vanity’ continues with a sparkling splendour, exuding a unique emotive majesty, proving that Smith-Start is certainly no one trick pony.

Reviving a classic punk energy and seething passion, tracks such as ‘Sleazebag’ – confronting all those sleazebags in the industry that we’re unfortunately so familiar with -, ‘Going Strong’ and ‘Heavy Crown’ blast out with an in-your-face power and empowering spirit, propelled by Hanley’s trademark immense basslines and Smith-Start’s gritty, snarling vocals.

Closing the album is perhaps the most poignant offering of the lot. Juxtaposing a romanticism of musicality with a forthright bold lyricism – “I will never give up, I will never back down…” -, it’s an utterly empowering end to a fantastic collection from a totally inspirational woman. Oozing a refreshingly raw, honest emotion, it’s a perfectly epic ballad to end the album – a motivational anthem that’ll have you singing along as you get up, ready to face the world, whatever it may throw at you.

Oozing a fresh energy, Breaking State marks Brix Smith-Start out as an artist willing to move with the times and develop her sound. Whilst retaining her reputation as a somewhat legendary musician, as well as a strong female presence in the industry, it’s refreshing to hear that she’s still coming up with new ideas and even drawing influence from some of the exciting young bands around at the moment. A perfect melting pot of genres and inspirations – from riotous punk, to classic rock ‘n’ roll’, and twinkling pop to fresh post-punk -, Breaking State is a simply epic creation, proving that Brix & The Extricated are well and truly back, and cannot be missed.

Video Premiere: Hilma Nikolaisen – ‘Only Me’

Following 2016’s debut Puzzler, Norwegian artist Hilma Nikolaisen has announced her upcoming new album Mjusic will be released next month, and has now graced our ears with an infectious new single.

Flowing with scuzzy hooks alongside Nikolaisen’s swooning, languid vocals, ‘Only Me’ oozes shades of the mellow alt-rock of the likes of Courtney Barnett or Pip Blom. Fuelled with impressive riffs and jangly, lo-fi melodies, it’s propelled by a paradoxical visceral energy whilst at the same time emanating all the dreamy, laid-back feels before it speeds to a final, whirring climax. Accompanied by a psychedelic new video, featuring artwork from Vanessa Baird, ‘Only Me’ is an uplifting slice of rock ‘n’ roll with a contemporary edge.

Of the video, Nikolaisen expands:

“I am a big fan of the artist Vanessa Baird. In 2016 I was fortunate to feature her work on the cover art for my debut album ‘Puzzler’. Baird’s breathtaking exhibition ‘You Are Something Else’ was really something else. I’m proud and grateful to have ‘Only Me’ and ‘You Are Something Else’ connected in this video.”

Mjusic, the upcoming new album from Hilma Nikolaisen, is out 30th November.

Track Of The Day: Scrounge – ‘Etch’

One of our favourite duos around at the moment, Lucy and Luke – aka Scrounge – met at Goldsmiths and are now based in South London creating totally unique, immense genre-blending post punk anthems. Having played for us a couple of times now, their live show is truly breathtaking, unlike anything else I’ve seen or heard before. And so, it was with excitement that we heard they have brand new single out…

Both edgy and itchy, the appropriately named ‘Etch’ is a short, but very sweet, blast of perfect scuzz-filled post-punk. A track that will indeed remain etched on your ears, demanding multiple listens, it’s propelled by Luke’s thrashing beats as Lucy’s colossal vocals rage alongside whirring hooks with a gritty sense of urgency. Oozing the duo’s epic, swirling wall of sound, with ‘Etch’ Scrounge have blown me away once again, marking themselves out as definite ones to watch.

‘Etch’ is out now via Fierce Panda Records. And you can catch Scrounge live at the following dates:

30th October – The Lexington, London (supporting Hater)
29th November – The Social, London

Lips Choir announce upcoming ‘Club Classics’ gigs

A singing collective for anyone who self-identifies as female, inclusive London-based Lips Choir have just announced their biggest gigs to date, with two nights planned at Clapham Grand on 14th and 15th November.

Talking about the importance of Lips Choir, Sally O’Connor from the group says:

Feminist choirs are offering something that hasn’t really existed much before now – a space for women to take up space and create their own sound and to use their voices to make change in the world. There’s a lot of power and joy in a group of people coming together and singing…

With Lips Choir having previously sold out The Coronet and performed at Bestival, Wilderness and The Royal Albert Hall, next month’s gigs will be celebrating their collection of songs Club Classics: The Lips Remix, and will treat fans to a brand new set that explores the history of dance music in sweet harmony.

Complete with a six-piece all-female live band and special guests including 4x UK beatboxing champion Grace Savage, these gigs looks set to be fun-filled, uplifting events to definitely put in the diary!

Of the event, musical director Jessica Maryon Davis explains:

With this gig, we’re going big on all areas of dance music. We want to bring the Lips sound to everything from Acid House to UK Garage and give props to those varied voices which created the all-time club classics everyone knows and loves. Being a choir, it’ll add a different twist – people aren’t used to hearing up-tempo club tunes sung in choral harmony!

Tickets are £15 (£8 for concessions) and the choir will also be raising money for WAST (Women Asylum Seekers Together). Tickets are available here.
