LISTEN: Jealous Tina – ‘Interim’

A hazy, lo-fi musing on the energy we pour into those who are sometimes not worthy of our love; Jealous Tina have shared their debut single, ‘Interim’. Taken from the band’s debut EP which is currently in the works; the track is a smooth, jazzy offering from the neo-soul outfit.

Based in Bath, Jealous Tina formed in 2018 and began creating music together. The five piece are influenced by the sounds of Mahalia, Puma Blue and Erykah Badu, giving their tracks a soulful, jazz-inspired sound. Vocalist and saxophonist Rosie Patton fronts the band, and her voice takes centre stage on ‘Interim’.

“You’ve got me wrapped around your finger, is that where I’m supposed to be?” questions Patton, over grooving bass lines and steady beats. “I’ve tried to be anything but yours” she muses further, laying bare her thoughts about what it takes to be an “interim lover”. The track is accompanied by a sweet, nostalgic looking video, shot and directed by Patton herself. Watch the footage below and follow Jealous Tina on Facebook & Spotify for more updates.

WATCH: Tired Lion – ‘Waterbed’

Smoking Nuns, cemetery backdrops, and savage guitar riffs dominate the new video for Tired Lion’s latest single, ‘Waterbed’. The track is a grunge-infused goodbye to the past, and a bold leap into the band’s future sound.

“I could never feel the way I used to feel” sings front woman Sophie Hopes, over grungy guitars and crashing percussion. Though her lyrics drip with disappointment, her powerful vocals act as a catalyst for letting go of what’s dragging her down. Hopes relocated to Brisbane from her hometown of Perth 18 months ago and has been evolving Tired Lion’s sound ever since.

Speaking about the track, Hopes explains: “I guess I always found waterbeds fascinating – they came with guarantees of abolishing back aches, better sex, curing insomnia etc. – none of which actually happened. I read that apparently a lot of people didn’t last more than a month with them. The song represents that you could buy into the idea of something but when you get there the reality is actually far from what you expected. Looking back on memories, sometimes things just don’t work out the way you thought they would – the song is about cutting ties to the past.”

Track Of The Day: Mourn – ‘Call You Back’

An edgy, relatable exploration of the anxieties around answering the phone; MOURN have shared their latest single, ‘Call You Back’. Released via Captured Tracks, the band have managed to turn their feelings of unease into an instantly gratifying, cathartic guitar tune.

Boldly opening with the repeated lyric “I’d rather die”, the Catalan three-piece are quick to communicate their dread about a seemingly easy task, but then confess on a more personal note: “before letting you know how I feel about you.” MOURN are adept at tapping into universal insecurities, providing a personal angle, and deconstructing them through indie guitar hooks and powerful vocals.

Since the release of their 2019 album, Sorpresa Familia, MOURN have undergone a lineup change (drummer Antonio Postius left the band), and severed ties with their former Spanish label. It’s fair to say the band have done a lot of growing up, and this is reflected in their current single. “I admire you, and it’s hard to realise that you might be wrong” the band admit on ‘Call You Back’, rooting their lyricism in a more mature reality.

The accompanying video for ‘Call You Back’ was (ironically) shot on the band’s smart phones, as they were unable to create the music video they had planned due to Spain’s current lockdown. The result is an inventive, witty set of visuals that communicate the band’s desire to escape their anxieties. Watch the video below, and follow MOURN on Facebook & Spotify for more updates.

LISTEN: Tora – ‘Call Your Name’

A captivating exploration of inequality and unbalanced power dynamics; Tora has shared her latest single, ‘Call Your Name’. Produced by Courage, the track is a soulful blend of steady beats, saxophone sounds and smooth vocals that prove Tora has a talent for commanding listeners attention.

Self-described as “empathy with a sharp tongue”, Tora’s music is as edgy as it is enigmatic. On ‘Call Your Name’, she shuns the idea of seeking validation from others, delivering her own story with her soft, yet powerful vocals. “They don’t write stories ’bout women like me” she sings; determined to shake up the narrative and write her own.

Following on from her previous singles ‘Vein’ and ‘Pisonia Prologue’, ‘Call Your Name’ is another example of Tora’s ability to coolly observe injustices, and transform them in to captivating tunes. Listen to ‘Call Your Name’ below and follow Tora on Instagram & Spotify for more updates.
