WATCH: Empress Of – ‘When I’m With Him’

The marvelous Empress Of has shared a video for her latest single ‘When I’m With Him’- an upbeat reflection on an uneven relationship. The track is taken from her second LP Us, which is due to be released this October.

Empress Of (aka Loreley Rodriguez) released her debut album Me in 2015 to critical acclaim, and her aptly named follow-up record Us promises to be equally as interesting if ‘When I’m With Him’ is anything to go by. Lorely handled all of the production and writing on her debut album, building a strong reputation for being a woman in command of her introspective, self-empowering electro-pop sound.

Alongside the release of her new album, Lorely has announced a collaboration with Chloe for their Fall/Winter 2018 campaign, so expect to see and hear a lot more from her in the next few months. Watch the video for ‘When I’m With Him’ below and follow Empress Of on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Noga Erez – ‘Cash Out’ (feat. SAMMUS)

The idiosyncratic voices of Tel Aviv’s Noga Erez and Philadelphia rapper SAMMUS combine in superb style on ‘Cash Out’, the follow up to Noga Erez’s previous knockout single ‘Bad Habits’. Together, the pair “call out the contradicting and chauvinistic pressures piled on women through consumerist society” with defiant, seething flair.

Warped, stretched beats and sharply outspoken lyrics permeate the track, which tackles the toxic double standards women routinely face. Erez explains the track’s purpose further: “The intention is to list out things that can make you a successful woman, in the most twisted, chauvinistic way. What society’s version is contradicts itself (eat breakfast, not too much), and is derived from the image of well-being and wealth that is presented to us alongside commercials about food, food porn etc. It all sums up a person feeling that their mind is exploding from consuming everything that we are fed by society and advertising companies. The song is all from a woman’s perspective.”

It’s this distinct perspective that makes Erez’s new music so ear-catching. Both ‘Bad Habits’ and ‘Cash Out’ mark a stylistic shift away from her highly acclaimed debut album Off The Radar (released via City Slang in 2017), proving that Erez is capable of dismantling her own sound as well as out-dated, patriarchal values. Her lyrical wit is complimented perfectly by SAMMUS’ razor sharp raps, making the context of the track ring out with powerful intensity. WATCH: Anteros – ‘Call Your Mother’

Anteros have delivered another shimmering indie-pop gem in the form of ‘Call Your Mother’, with a sweltering new video to accompany it. Released via Distiller Records and produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman, Bloc Party), the track fluctuates between heartfelt youth and heady fun.

The video is the first in a series of short films shot in Marrakech, co-directed by frontwoman Laura Hayden and creative director Bella Howard (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX, HAIM.) Speaking about the inspiration behind the video, Laura says: “Growing up, leaving home, the first taste of freedom is the sweetest. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Confusion, mess, self-awareness, little big disasters, discovering the grey area. Having to stew there for a while. Communication, self-reflection, the BIG picture, the small ones that get you there. Where to look? What happens next? Excitement. Melancholy. You stand still, you move on. You build your own home.”

Anteros have been busy playing live shows alongside the likes of Two Door Cinema Club, Sundara Karma and Circa Waves – as well as appearing as guests on one of our previous Get In Her Ears radio shows! Expect plenty more new music from the band in the coming months, with their debut album set for release in 2019. The four-piece have also announced a new UK headline tour for October, including a date at The Garage in London.

Track Of The Day: Ouri – ‘Escape’

Offering listeners an opportunity to immerse themselves in her atmospheric, carefully curated beats: Multi-instrumentalist, DJ & electronic producer Ouri has shared her latest single ‘Escape’.

Taken from her upcoming EP We Share Our Blood – set for release on September 28th via Ghostly International – ‘Escape’ is a cleanly cut, impressive example of Ouri’s production skills. Speaking about her new EP, she says: “As I continue to create music, I want the whole experience to be even more raw. No one else is included for this one; from writing to mastering, the process is direct from me to the listener”.

It’s this assertiveness that’s allowed Ouri to hone her vision. In 2017, she released her debut album Superficial, on which she mixed her truth with chaos. Her obsession with strong sensations, femininity and this same truth makes up the heart of this record. In late 2017, she joined forces with Montreal-based singer-songwriter Mind Bath, and dropped a surprise self-titled EP. The Ouri / Mind Bath EP features both tenderness and aggressiveness, and balances the femininity and masculinity of the two artists.
