Track Of The Day: My Idea – ‘Breathe You’

With the final single from their debut album, New York duo My Idea rip up the rulebook. ‘Breathe You’ feels radically vulnerable. The intimacy of the lyrics and production make for uncomfortable listening: it’s the musical equivalent of hearing your neighbours arguing through paper-thin walls.

The band, made up of Palberta’s Lily Konigsberg and Water from your Eyes’ Nate Amos, have talked about their latest album soundtracking a collective breaking point. And you can hear that so clearly in this duet. Amos’ lo-fi, electronically enhanced vocal collides starkly with the purity of Konigberg’s voice, stopping you in your tracks. And the conflict builds further with the song’s urgency and almost grotesque imagery that paints a picture of obsessive lust.

Of the track, Amos explains:

“‘Breathe You’ was never really intended to be on the album. I made the hook/beat in the middle of a night when I was unable to sleep and sent it to Lily as a sort of ‘check out how ridiculous this is’ joke; she recorded the verses and sent it back within a day. This was during a really difficult time for both of us and we were processing our emotions in very different ways – I buried my sadness inside of humour and Lily wore hers on her sleeve In spite of the absurdity of the song at a basic level, it ended up being as honest and accurate as anything we’ve made…”

Releasing ‘Breathe You’ as the last single of their first album is a stroke of genius from the band. It’s such an interesting song, both musically and lyrically, that you can’t help but wonder what they’ll do next!

Cry Mfer, the debut album from My Idea, is out now on Hardly Art.

Track Of The Day: Piney Gir – ‘Alchemy Hand’

The iconic Piney Gir proves why she’s been dubbed “the indie Dolly Parton” with her latest single, ‘Alchemy Hand’. It’s a retro slice of psychedelic garage rock, which showcases Piney’s supernatural talent as a singer and songwriter.

Opening with a woozy, nostalgic organ-style whirr, the song builds to a brilliantly proggy chorus which gives it a spooky 1960s feel. Think Aleister Crowley and Marianne Faithfull messing with an Ouija Board! When you add Piney’s distinctive, bluesy vocal into the mix, it’s nothing short of perfection.

Piney’s confident, beautifully crafted lyrics explore spirituality which further adds to the song’s dreamy, mystical energy. And when she sings “I put a spell on you,” you believe her. It’s instantly bewitching. With ‘Alchemy Hand’, Piney Gir shows she can truly make magic.

‘Alchemy Hand’ is out now Reckless Yes and an EP of the same name is due in June.

LISTEN: GRAWL!X – ‘Hopelessness’

I let out a little squeal of joy when this landed in my inbox. Grawl!x’s first new music since 2020, ‘Hopelessness’ is a dreamy piece of uplifting pop. With the band’s newly expanded line-up, Maria Michael Machin’s beautiful vocals and revelatory lyrics are given the big, bold platform they truly deserve, buoyed by multiple layers of lush melody and instrumentation.

For a song about hopelessness, this electro-infused number feels anything but. It’s simultaneously joyous and vulnerable; a sad song that you can have a proper shimmy to, which emphasises the importance of hope and sharing your feelings.

Formally a solo project, this taste of new music from Grawl!x is infused with a new confidence and energy that we’ve never seen before. With an EP due for release this spring, it feels like they’re a band at the height of their powers.

Spring, the upcoming new EP from Grawl!x, is set for release later this Spring via Reckless Yes.

Track Of The Day: Sassyhiya – ‘I Had A Thought’

Formally of the beloved cult guitar band Barry, who seemingly made everyone who saw them fall in love with them, Kathy Wright and Helen Skinner are now striking out on their own as Sassyhiya and have shared an uplifting new video. Taken from their debut EP, ‘I had a thought’ is just irresistible; a supercool slice of wonky post-punk that will, excuse the pun, get in your ears and refuse to leave.

The duo, who are real life as well as musical partners, have an undeniable chemistry and confidence. Recorded at home over lockdown, the song’s plodding, melodic bass, jerky guitars and twee, sing-song vocals collide brilliantly to make a modern, post-punk classic.

The song is a must-listen for fans of The Raincoats, Shop Assistants, Delta 5 and Shopping. A bold, brilliant and fully realised debut, the band have given us a very sassy ‘hiya!’ indeed. Here’s to many more!

Gum Demos, the new EP from Sassyhiya is out now. And you can catch Sassyhiya at their first ever gig, playing for us with Fightmilk and Bitch Hunt at The Shacklewell Arms on 25th March. Tickets here.
