EP: Ghum – ‘The Coldest Fire’

London based quartet GHUM have been organically fusing post-punk with grunge for over three years, resulting in dangerously dark pop that is often as hostile as it is haunting. Their ghostly sound has continued to evolve during this time; from the brooding atmosphere of their  2017 self-titled EP, to the raw emotion of their 2018 double A-Side single: ‘I’m The Storm / Undone’.

After numerous musical endeavours across England, Spain, and Brazil, vocalist Laura Guerrero Lora, bassist Marina MJ, drummer Vicki Butler, and guitarist/vocalist Jojo Khor formed GHUM through a shared love of The Cure and PJ Harvey. Yet, despite their similar interests in alt/gothic rock, each member of the band is a distinctive personality – the band as a whole being self-described as a mix of “passion, anger, logic, precision, timidness, volume and emotion, all at the same time.” Their upcoming EP, The Coldest Fire, is the band sharpening the edge of their knife – an ever evolving, always mysterious, brutally honest sound, that perfectly encapsulates all these elements.

Opening track ‘Saturn’ was the first song to be recorded, and it is immediately apparent that GHUM are not afraid to explore darker territories. The combination of Vicki’s technical drum strikes, Marina’s rhythmic basslines, Jojo’s expansive, borderline psychedelic guitar, and Laura’s mesmerising vocals are reminiscent of early Warpaint. ‘Saturn’ is an atmospheric track with dark pop sensibilities that completely immerses the listener throughout.

‘Get Up’ introduces itself with a bewitching, dark bassline that propels the scuzzy, whirring guitar riffs and rumbling beats that follow to a climax of anger and isolation. Echoing the track’s title, Laura’s determined, ardent voice bellows out the hauntingly anthemic, indignant chorus with such fierce emotion – and a delicate use of Spanish – that you will soon find yourself brooding on the dancefloor. “What I felt is what you feel / Tu me lo hiciste una vez [You did it to me once] / Now I want to see your tears…”

Halfway through The Coldest Fire, and no less hostile than the previous two tracks, ‘1000 Men’ is a textured guitarscape of abrasive, crushing rhythms and piercing bass. The vocals leading the melody move gradually through grunge to an eerie finale that left me with chills down my spine – “A thousand men can’t keep me safe.”

By the closing track, ‘In My Head’, I was left reflecting upon the whole sombre experience of The Coldest Fire; an intense four-track extended play about unpredictable love. The band themselves have described The Coldest Fire as “a re-introduction to GHUM,” and I’m inclined to agree. The EP displays the confidence of a band expanding, but not compromising on their grunge/pop sound or post-punk identity.

The Coldest Fire is out on 28th June on Everything Sucks Music. Pre-order via Bandcamp now. And catch GHUM live at the EP launch at The Shacklewell Arms on 13th July.

Track Of The Day: ARXX – ‘Iron Lung’

Following last year’s release of their incredible debut EP Daughters Of Daughters, and wowing crowds supporting the likes of Lady Bird and The Coathangers as well as at Cro Cro Land in April, GIHE faves ARXX have now shared a fantastically ferocious new single.

Wasting no time at all, ‘Iron Lung’ kicks off immediately with vocalist/guitarist Hannah blasting into our ears with her distinctive, penetrating growl: “Give me the iron lung”, she demands, as we’re instantly, once again, completely blown away by the Brighton duo’s unmatched raw power.

Showcasing all that we love about them, with ‘Iron Lung’ ARXX deliver their immense, ferocious sound to full effect. Driven by Hannah’s fierce emotion and Clara’s unrelenting thrashing beats, it rages with scuzzed-out hooks reminiscent of the catchy rock anthems of (personal heroes) Foo Fighters.

Despite the comparison, however (and it is a compliment of the highest, coming from me: a fangirl who’s seen Foos 14 times), ARXX truly are completely unique in both sound and energy. Having heard ‘Iron Lung’ live the last couple of times I’ve seen them, it’s wonderful to hear it recorded; capturing the raucous force of their live shows perfectly.

Without meaning to sound like a broken record, I really cannot stress strongly enough how incredible I think ARXX are. They stand out amongst a sea of new bands as a constant breath of fresh air; a mighty force to be reckoned with whose consistent dedication and energy to all they do is to be admired. They’re my most favourite power duo, deserving of every success that comes their way, and I cannot wait to see where their anthem-filled journey takes them next.

‘Iron Lung’ is out 7th June. Catch ARXX live:

10th August – Boardmasters Festival, Newquay
14th September – The Dome, Tufnell Park (Loud Women Fest)

Track Of The Day: Joviale – ‘Dreamboat’

Instinctive, hypnotic sounds permeate London-based songwriter Joviale‘s new single ‘Dreamboat’. As the title suggests, it’s a hazy blur of beguiling vocals and avant-pop sounds that’ll have you drifting through feelings of pleasure and pain.

Joviale’s music is informed by the tone and emotion in the songs of Billie Holiday and Janis Joplin, the rhythms of 60’s girl groups like The Marvelettes and The Ronnettes, and the timbre of the percussion and brass in the African music she listened to growing up.

While writing and recording ‘Dreamboat’, Joviale collected material for a scrapbook comprised of various fabrics, cutouts from fashion editorials, alongside religious imagery. She surrounds herself with “soundscapes and treasures from different cultures”, often exploring how movement and nature can be connected to her music. ”It’s my method of weathering a crisis” Joviale explains, “because every experience is a gift whether it’s bad or good”.

‘Dreamboat’ is a disarming, harmonious fusion of charming vocals and sultry sounds, and we can’t wait to her more of the tracks on Joviale’s upcoming EP. listen to the track below and follow Joviale on Facebook for more updates.

LIVE (Photos): Camden Rocks, 02.06.19

Last weekend saw the return of North London’s celebration of all things rawk, Camden Rocks; an annual festival held at various venues across Camden, featuring an array of bands new and old.

Our photographer Jon Mo was lucky enough to head over on Sunday to catch some of our favourites…

Treating The Hawley Arms to their sweeping, dreamy sounds were Indian Queens.

Pals of GIHE and all round awesome people, Tiger Mimic, delivered a special acoustic set for Kick Out The Jams at Rock ‘n’ Roll Rescue.

Riotous duo The Pearl Harts blasted out their seething desert rock at The Monarch.

Having previously wowed us live at The Five Bells, HAWXX delivered their frenzied rock anthems at The Fiddler’s Elbow.

Friends of GIHE, immense rockers The Muffin Heads, blasted out their tremendous raging force at The Dublin Castle.

The Dublin Castle also played host to GIHE faves Bugeye and their unique, sparkling disco-punk power.
