Track Of The Day: The Motion – ‘Sleep Talk’

Having previously wowed us live at The Finsbury, and with a special acoustic set on our radio show last year, The Motion – a musical project curated by songwriter, engineer and producer Penny Churchill – draws on raw and emotionally-driven lyrics to reflect on their own personal experiences. New single ‘Sleep Talk’ is a slow indie record, using synthetic instrumentals behind soft vocals to add an air of vulnerability that couples with the lyrics perfectly.

Themes of isolation, insomnia and emotional instability expose Churchill’s own raw emotions, which makes it easy for the audience to connect with what they’re saying. The light/dark of the verses and brighter choruses reflect the real-life contrast between happiness and sadness, which are effectively fused together in ‘Sleep Talk’, creating a truly immersive offering.

Of the track, The Motion explains:

“The track captures the mood of being stuck in a cyclical rut of routine. The verses are slow and sonically dark, whereas the chorus is directly contrasting with a warm, surreal feeling. This makes me feel as though, for a moment, I am elsewhere, somewhere with a more free and organic atmosphere in momentary bliss.”

‘Sleep Talk’ is out now, listen on Soundcloud. And you can catch The Motion live on 5th June at The Underbelly in Hoxton Square, London.

LISTEN: Julia Shapiro – ‘A Couple Highs’

“When the rest of my life felt out of control, I felt like this was my chance to be in control of everything” explains Julia Shapiro about her upcoming debut solo album Perfect Version, which is set for release on June 14th via Hardly Art. Having taken a step back from life as Chastity Belt’s vocalist & guitarist after a difficult year, Shapiro has returned with the second single from her new record titled ‘A Couple Highs’; and it’s a breezy, soothing drop of aural medicine.

The track is accompanied by a set of visuals directed by Claire Buss, and is a subtle homage to Kelly Reichardt’s 2008 film Wendy and Lucy, showing Shapiro and her canine doppelganger explore the quiet beauty of suburban Seattle. Shimmering guitars and Shapiro’s gentle voice make the track a real tonic for the ears, and the knowledge that Shapiro played all the instruments herself makes for extra listening satisfaction.

Over the course of a tumultuous year of trying to find stability amidst depression and surgery, Shapiro ultimately rediscovered the parts of music that she loved through the process, and it shines through on her latest single. WATCH: ARXX – ‘Moments At A Time’

As any regular follower of Get In Her Ears will be aware, we’re huge fans of Brighton duo ARXX. They’ve wowed us on numerous occasions (including at our recent International Women’s Day gig at The Finsbury) with their utterly, ferociously, breathtaking live performance, and blasted into ears nationwide with their debut EP Daughters Of Daughters last year.

Now they’ve shared a brand new video to the EP’s opening track, ‘Moments At A Time’. Capturing the immense, thrashing energy of the duo’s live shows, it showcases their phenomenal, sparkling force perfectly. As the fierce passion of Hannah’s raw, impassioned vocals blast out against frenzied riffs and Clara’s spectacularly pummelling beats, their seething, punk-infused power is juxtaposed with some beautiful, flowing contemporary dance.

Refreshingly channelling some much-needed female aggression (“I don’t really need you, I’m just taking what I can get…”), ‘Moments At A Time’ once again proves ARXX’s truly magnificent command of all they do, cementing them as one of the most incredible bands I’ve ever come across; truly deserving of every success.

Watch the gloriously glitter-filled video for ‘Moments At A Time’ here:

Catch ARXX live (you will not regret it!) at the following dates:

Tonight (9th May) – The Vans Store, Brighton
11th May – Brighton Brewhouse, Brighton (part of The Alt Show All Dayer in Association with Pool Valley)
17th May – The Waiting Room, London (supporting Projector)

Track Of The Day: La Lune – ‘Grape Soda’

Brighton based dream-pop artist La Lune has shared her sugary new single ‘Grape Soda’ and its a bitter sweet exploration of “love, lustful addiction, and self-destruction”. She’s also shared a hand-illustrated music video to accompany the track, made by graphic designer and fashion student Eva Kubacka.

La Lune has been writing, producing and releasing music with a DIY ethos since she was 18. Now at 20 years old, she’s beginning to capture the attention of BBC Introducing, BBC Radio 6, NME, and Spotify, landing a spot on New Music Friday UK with her recent collaborative release, ‘Heartstop’.

Her refreshing and ambient sounds are reflected in her approach to promoting and sharing her own music too. Masked beneath her pseudonym and with a subtle social media presence, La Lune is using obscurity to protest against the over-sexualisation of women in music, stating that her music should be listened to and judged at “face value”.

With songs as catchy as ‘Grape Soda’ and mesmerising visuals to match, we’re sure La Lune’s approach to music will be respected for what it is: pure and well produced. Watch the video for her new single below and follow La Lune on Facebook for more updates.

La Lune UK Live Dates 2019
June 10th – Komedia, Brighton
August 11th – Boardmasters Festival
August 18th – Twisted Village Festival
