LISTEN: Nasty Little Lonely – ‘Glitter’

Industrial and sinister post-punk sounds collide in gritty yet sparkling style on Nasty Little Lonely‘s latest track ‘Glitter’. Hailing from the Bristol scene that recently spat Idles into the music world’s consciousness, the trio are inspired by the likes of MX-80 and have shared stages with The Wytches, Idles, Part Chimp, God Damn, Bo Ningen and Lydia Lunch.

Despite it’s glamorous namesake, ‘Glitter’ is a track drenched in introspection and anxiety, examining the mental strains of being a performer. It recounts the moments of exhilaration on stage that often come at the cost of a great deal of stress, and abrasively explores whether the highs would be as powerful without the lows.

LIVE: Black Gold Buffalo – The Waiting Room, London 07.02.18

Black Gold Buffalo performed to a packed Waiting Room in Stoke Newington on Wednesday night, proving that their brief absence from the live scene has not altered their ability to deliver sharp renditions of their intoxicating sounds.

Although the band have undergone line-up changes since their conception in 2012, they’re still fronted by vocalist Keziah Stillwell, with the multi-talented Hannah Holland on bass and production. Guitarist Marc Hayward and percussionist Joy Joseph now complete the group, helping to bring Black Gold Buffalo’s moody, atmospheric tracks to life.

Keziah’s vocals and performance style made the set all the more compelling. She captivated to crowd with her majestic voice and fans happily complied when she asked them to step forward to fill the space in front of the stage. Joy’s intense and vital percussion anchored the set, working in harmony with Hannah’s brooding basslines and Marc’s melodic guitar riffs.

The band played a selection of new and old tracks, but recent singles ‘Pearls Deep’ and ‘Lay It Down’ rang out the clearest, both of which will feature on the group’s self-titled debut album which is set for release later this year. Full of urgency, atmosphere and energy, Black Gold Buffalo should be at the top of your live “to see” list.

Track Of The Day: Bamboo Smoke – ‘To The Waves’

A dreamy, ambient offering that gently tugs on the heart-strings, Bamboo Smoke have shared their latest single ‘To The Waves’. Brought together by their shared love of soul, hip hop & jazz, Bamboo Smoke prefer to keep things “fairly loose and unpolished”, trying to retain “as many raw qualities” from each recording as they can.

“Can you hold my heart, without falling apart?” questions vocalist Louise on ‘To The Waves’, as instrumentalist Tom creates a hazy soundscape to reflect on such an intimate thought. We’re swept away by the bands efforts on this new track and think you will be too.

WATCH: Pillow Queens – ‘Favourite’ (acoustic)

Irish indie band Pillow Queens have shared an acoustic version of their recent single ‘Favourite’, proving their gentler musical arrangements can still pack an emotional punch. The track is taken from the band’s upcoming EP State of The State, which is set for release via Specialist Subject on 16th March.

Pillow Queens’ charm and energy still flows through this softer rendition of ‘Favourite’ and it permeates the sound on their upcoming EP too. The band worked with Producer Peter Ashmore to finalise their musical explorations of “emotional highs and lows”, including the “frustration of trying to succeed in post-recession Ireland” and the toll that can take on your mental health.

Pillow Queens will be touring Ireland and the UK in April, so make sure you learn all of the words to ‘Favourite’ before you head along to one of their shows.
