WATCH: Noga Erez – ‘NAILS’

Flowing with her trademark polished production, defiant vocal swagger and snappy lyrics, pop renegade & GIHE favourite Noga Erez has returned with her razor sharp single, ‘NAILS’. Released via Neon Gold/Atlantic Records, who Erez has recently signed to, and her first new music since her second album KIDS, ‘NAILS’ is accompanied by a slick video directed by long time collaborator Indy Hait, featuring Erez and her music & life partner Ori Rousso.

“‘NAILS’ is a song about jealousy, and how being jealous of people, in this particular case another woman, makes you idealize that person in a very weird and dark way,” Erez explains about the track. Together, Rousso and Erez explore these emotions through their infectious beats and Erez’s visceral emceeing, playfully loosening the grip of the jealous thoughts that we are all prone to from time to time.

The deeply satisfying sound of Erez tapping her own nails on different surfaces also underscores the new anthem. Their crunch adds a palpable, physical energy to the song, emphasizing the sharp humour that fuels her fierce lyrics. Armed with her embellished fingertips, she imagines her own nails as an amusing weapon with which to take down her adversaries – “I’ll bump a bitch / flesh pieces in my nails.”

Erez acknowledges the privilege of being allowed to work through these emotions in her music. “I feel like we live in a culture that says, ‘Don’t think those negative thoughts. Don’t even let that cross your mind’ but sometimes I’m like – ‘these bitches are looking at my man, I don’t want that!’ – it’s very, very funny. So I say, let it cross your mind, so that you can leave these things at the thought level, and get the poison out of you. The song is an invitation for everyone to feel that empowering, aggressive vibe and embrace it.”

ALBUM: Anteros – ‘When We Land’

After putting it off for many years, I’ve finally learned to drive, and as every 27 (or 17) year old knows; a perfect driving album is key to any good road trip. Enter When We Land, the debut album from Anteros released via Distiller Records. It’s the perfect dream-pop companion to hit the open road with.

Since forming in 2014, the band have been making the rounds touring the UK with groups such as Two Door Cinema Club, Blaenavon, and White Lies. They hit up Glastonbury and Reading along the way, honing their disco-pumping rock. I love a band that waits a little while to put out their debut album, and just like driving, this album is well worth the wait.

Standout Tracks include ‘Honey’ – an absolute thumping ear-worm with a lovely, sticky, fuzzy-bee of a bass tone. If ‘Honey’ is the call, then ‘Afterglow’ is the superb melancholic response. This banger would sound at home on the Atomic Blonde soundtrack. It sounds like you’re trying to dance your troubles away in a Berlin club and don’t want to find the exit.

‘Drive On’, the lead single from the album, keeps this record steaming on, and I particularly love the exposed fragility of Laura Hayden’s vocal in the bridge. ‘Ordinary Girl’ is a slowed down power ballad to gesticulate to, the best part of which being the drop before the gargantuan chorus kicks in. If the rest of the album is a night out, then this is the crippling, reflective hangover. Actually, this track is the reason for the night out in the first place; there’s an underpin of heartbreak to this album, and ‘Ordinary Girl’ finally gives the listener some answers as to where this heartbreak came from.

If you’re a fan of Black Honey, Dream Wife or Goldfrapp; you’re definitely going to be interested in Anteros’ album. It’s a great debut from a hard-working new band and it’ll take them to all the right places. Grab your copy here.

Track Of The Day: Emilie Kahn – ‘Will You?’

Beautifully melancholic and expertly produced, Montreal songwriter Emilie Kahn‘s latest single ‘Will You?’ makes for a poignant and earnest listen. The track is taken from  her second album Outro, which is set for release on 22nd February via Secret City Records.

The new song is accompanied by an equally beautiful music video, directed by Aaliyeh Afshar and Max Taeuschel. Speaking about the visuals, the pair explain: “We wanted to highlight Emilie’s performance while exploring the dark but tender feeling of the song. Playing with the mirror, blinds and faux walls, we wanted to delve into the liminal divide between life and death in a physical way”.

Emilie Kahn’s alternative pop tunes have an exquisite pain about them, and ‘Will You?’ is another shining example of the songwriter’s ability to achieve so much through minimal but focused music. Listen to ‘Will You?’ below and follow Emilie Kahn on Facebook for more updates.

LISTEN: Laura Musgrave – ‘Two of a Kind’

Leicestershire songwriter Laura Musgrave has shared her latest single ‘Two of a Kind’ with a heartwarming video to accompany it. The footage features photos of Laura’s fans who submitted their “two of a kind” photos, whilst Laura’s gentle vocals celebrate the special unions they have.

Although she never stopped writing music, Laura returned to recording again after a decade long hiatus in 2018. The break not only gave Laura the chance to feel more comfortable with her style of music, it also helped her to find inspiration in other genres too; including folk, country and blues.

Laura’s perseverance and ingenuity have led her to create easy-listening tunes like ‘Two Of A Kind’. Listen to the the track below and follow Laura on Facebook for more updates.
