Track Of The Day: BABii – ‘Beast’

In her new dreamy electro single ‘Beast’, Margate-based artist and producer BABii arranges a harmonious meeting spot where stretched synths and longing lyrics dance in the air. With a tasteful distance between sounds, BABii’s production footprint is minimalistic and distinctive – painting a rather vast soundscape within a lo-fi/bedroom-pop context.

Creating the ideal quirky bedroom palette, and then expanding upon that so elegantly seems quite natural to BABii as she resembles experimental artists like FKA Twigs and Clairo. Her eerie bass that tiptoes beneath the mix sets the temperature in which the emotionally icy song sits. Building from the song’s start, the instruments seem to slowly gather and linger to then hit hard as ever in BABii’s in-your-face chorus. Polyrhythmic relationships between the song’s vocal melodies and instrumentals make for a fascinating and emotive evolution of the ‘Beast’. This bubbling sonic space mirrors the yearning feelings BABii suggests in her lyrics discussing distance and its push and pull side effects.

Being in “the belly of the beast” is emotionally confrontational and cathartic as BABii’s ‘Beast’ unravels and brings light to its true narrative.

Track Of The Day: BABii – ‘POiiSON’

A melancholy electronic exploration of a toxic relationship; Margate Producer BABii has shared her new single ‘POiiSON’, taken from her debut album HiiDE which is set for release on 5th July via Deathwaltz Originals.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Grimes, FKA Twigs and even JoJo and the Pocahontas soundtrack, BABii has been busy crafting her electronic pop beats over the last few years. She played 7 shows in 5 days at this year’s SXSW Festival, and she’s set play shows across the UK to celebrate the release of her debut album this July.

Speaking about her new track ‘POiiSON’, BABii EXPLAINS:”[It’s] about being in a toxic relationship but just ignoring the fact that is not good or not working. I also wanted it to sonically sound like the feeling of being poisoned.” We’ve certainly been intoxicated by BABii’s catchy, impressive beats.

LISTEN: Babii – ‘Carniivore’

A taster from BABii’s forthcoming album HiiDE, ‘CARNiiVORE’ lives within a world of eerily fragile electronic soundscape that is reminiscent of early Grimes and FKA Twigs. There are mesmerising keyboard and synth sounds woven into its web of melody and, really, this is a particularly good example of what can be done with synth pop.

The song is intricate and clever while still being listenable and accessible. The dreamlike qualities of BABii’s work seem to stem from her preoccupation with her thwarted childhood dreams; there is a sense of the childlike as well as the terrifying in her soundscapes, which might be why she describes the process of making HiiDE as being her way of crying. This is an oddly beautiful single, and one that will stay with you long after listening.

Track Of The Day: BABii – ‘Seiizure’

Emerging Margate-based artist BABii has shared her new single ‘Seiizure’, taken from her debut LP HiiDE, which is set for release later this year via Deathwaltz Originals. It’s a lo-fi fusion of atmospheric synths, snappy percussion and cutting-but-cute vocals.

Speaking about the new track, BABii explains: “I nearly put this song in the bin, but Iglooghost heard a small clip from it when I used to post parts of songs on my Instagram and encouraged me to finish it. Now it’s one of my favourite songs on the record”. Encouraged by her collaborators and fans – including umru, Kai Whiston and Abi Wade – BABii has been cutting and pasting snippets of her songs and sharing them online for a while. Now, she’s ready to step in to the spotlight, and if ‘Seiizure is anything to go by, it’s going to be a bright one.
