Track Of The Day: Beorma – ‘Her’

A bittersweet, sultry tune lamenting the pain and confusion that comes with heartache, Birmingham-based duo Beorma have shared their latest single ‘Her’. Mixing R&B and indie pop sensibilities with a Prince inspired guitar solo, the track is a smooth, melancholy-tinged reflection on absent love.

Formed of Tom and Ferns, Beorma performed separately in different bands before they began working together during lockdown in 2020. Sending ideas back and forth online, the duo’s collaboration led to the creation of their debut EP Virtual Emotionality, which they released at the end of January. Now, the pair have shared their new single ‘Her’ which captures the inner conflicts of desire and the need for distance when it comes to a breakup.

“’Her’ is probably our most soulful song,” Ferns explains. “I really wanted to just lay it bare on vocals and nothing too fancy, just more about trying to channel raw emotion. Prince is a huge inspiration to me so that’s kinda the vibe I was going for whilst still making it very Beorma emo through the lyrics. I think it’s a really relatable song, we’ve all been through some sort of heartache and it’s never easy, especially not when you’re the cause of it. ‘Her’ is essentially a soulful breakup.”

“‘Her’ is a song that felt like it took forever to finish,” Tom continues. “I had the core of it sorted and sent it to Ferns quite early on in Beorma days, but the structure just never felt right, then at some point Ferns suggested a Prince type guitar solo after the first chorus and it all just fell into place after we put the guitar in there and now it’s one of our favourite songs.”

Track Of The Day: Table Scraps – ‘Threads’

Following the savage energy of last year’s ‘Doom Generation’, and having previously wowed crowds at SXSW, Birmingham trio – and GIHE faves – Table Scraps have now announced their new album, set for release in September. Originally conceived as a concept album in 2018, where a band emerges from the rubble of a post-apocalyptic event, after the events of the last couple of years, the doom-filled theme of the collection now seems more resonant than ever before.

Taken from the album, latest single ‘Threads‘ is propelled by a seething energy and gritty, swirling power as ferocious hooks race alongside fierce, thrashing beats. As an immense, impassioned drive builds an eerie sense of impending doom – “united by our gloom / we sense impending doom…” – the track blasts into the ears with a raging, psych-metal spirit, providing a perfectly riotous catharsis. Oozing a poignant sense of urgency, it’s an intense, blazing anthem for these scary times we currently find ourselves in.

Track Of The Day: Table Scraps – ‘Doom Generation’

Having received acclaim from the likes of Idles and BBC 6Music, and having wowed crowds at SXSW last year, Birmingham trio Table Scraps are back with a savage new single, ahead of their upcoming album, set for release next year.

Despite being recorded before the extremities of Covid hit, ‘Doom Generation’s  post-apocalyptic theme couldn’t be more resonant than right now. Immediately hitting the ears with a disconcerting sound of an air-raid siren, the track then builds with immense thrashing riffs and a searing sense of urgency. As the seething, angst-driven power of the vocals rages, ‘Doom Generation’ provides a fierce, riotous commentary on the state of society at the moment. Propelled by an impressive, ferocious musical force, it’s a perfectly poignant, raging catharsis for these seemingly doomed times.

‘Doom Generation’ is accompanied by a homemade animated video, depicting the band standing still, drinking beer, whilst the world collapses around them. A pretty spot-on summation of this year. The video also features cute cameos from other bands on the Birmingham garage rock circuit: Cherry Pickles, The Cosmics and Black Mekon.
