Track Of The Day: Lazybones – ‘Snake’

If you’re a fan of the shouty aggro of the likes of Slaves, but want some female vocals to go with the no-frills style, then have a listen to Brighton trio Lazybones, and their debut single,’Snake’ – featuring Candi on vox and organ, Joe on bass and Sam on drums.

On the surface, the sound of ‘Snake’ is much like Slaves, or Idles: over-driven, raw and raucous – deriving its power largely from Candi’s gritty singing style and Sam’s percussion. But underneath that, Lazybones’ secret weapon is the deceptively complex fretwork from Joe’s bass guitar and the underlying hum and whirl of that organ.

By the time the bridge arrives, with all the noise and intensity that it brings, the band that you’ll most be thinking of is DFA 1979. It’s that bass-led sound that really comes through after multiple listens to the song, which also bears comparison to some of Deap Vally’s harder-edged tunes. In terms of influences, Lazybones cite the likes of Black Sabbath and Sex Pistols, but it’s their nod to Chas & Dave that seems to demonstrate where their fondness for a succinct rhyming couplet comes from.

The band, in reference to their name, say they’ve been called “lazy for not getting a guitar player”. But, if anything, the video for ‘Snake’ tells a different story – with its commitment to a ’90s bowling alley aesthetic, achieved by playing hand-drawn animations on CRT TVs and recording the images on a VHS camcorder. And that’s true of the band’s sound too – combining wit, artistry, and plenty of venom, Lazybones have got the muscle, but they’ve also got the brains.

Catchy Lazybones live in Brighton on 22nd December at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar.

Track(s) Of The Day: Yumi And The Weather – ‘Long Before / Callum’

Yumi And The Weather is Brighton-based project fronted by the crystalline-voiced singer/songwriter/producer, Ruby Taylor. For those who let their ears and whole bodies drift to her wave, Yumi And The Weather make beautiful indie-electro pop, mixed with guitar, serving up dreams of endless, blissful summers, with an added depth. Now, Taylor has offered us a taste of what’s to come on next year’s debut album with a special AA side release.

‘Long Before’ is a sparkling guitar-led song reminiscent of Blondie. The lyrics soar around the crevices of a doomed relationship – “You were hiding from me/lying to me long before you came around to me.” The thrilling guitar solidifies the poignancy of the lyrics, lifting it up and letting it explode into sonic stardust.

‘Callum’, however, is a more introspective, electronica-fuelled offering. Another break-up song, Taylor’s voice repeats the name “Callum” throughout the beautiful chorus as the track builds to a powerful climax, ending with the poignant lyrics: “Like flowers that bloomed and slowly died… You didn’t seem to notice.”

Both tracks add beauty to the mundane, turning heartbreak into something transformative. The perfect sustinence for cold November days to make the endorphins dance again.

‘Long Before / Callum’ is out now via MIOHMI Records. Yumi And The Weather’s debut album is due for release in May 2018, but in the mean time, listen to more of her on Soundcloud – she deserves your love!

Track Of The Day: Anushka – ‘Mountains’

If you’re looking for something to funk up your Tuesday, Brighton duo Anushka are here to do just that. Together, Max Wheeler and Victoria Port combine elements of soul, house, jazz and hip hop to create a fresh, psychedelic, up-beat sound.

“It’s a song about how we are so often thrown into situations with people and they just aren’t ready to step up and be in the moment,” the band explain. “It’s about personal growth and how we move on from people, how we reconcile and forgive and about how we become our own strength.”

Anushka are preparing to share their new EP, which will feature artwork from artist and fashion designer Ryan Hawaii, in the next few months.

Track Of The Day: Projector – ‘Love’

Brace your ears for the swirling sounds of Brighton trio Projector‘s new single ‘Love’. It’s a gritty, sultry, reverb-soaked affair with a stylish accompanying video that shows the band performing live and looking painfully cool in the process.

We’ve been hooked on the sounds of Lucy, Demelza & Edward since we saw them live at DOLLS’ single launch in October, and their Sonic-Youth-meets-Bloody-Valentine vibes have been buzzing around our brains ever since.

The band will be playing at KidBrother’s single launch at The Monarch on the 7th November (RSVP here), as well as a headline show at New Cross Inn in January (event details here) so make sure you head down to see them if you’re free. Watch the video for ‘Love’ below and follow Projector on Facebook for more updates.

‘Love’ is available to download now.
