WATCH: Girl Ray – ‘Everybody’s Saying That’

Following the release of 2021’s ‘Give Me Your Love’, London trio (and GIHE faves) Girl Ray have now shared another much-anticipated buoyant new single.

Reflecting on themes of new love and self-doubt, ‘Everybody’s Saying That‘ is propelled by a swirling disco-inspired energy, oozing the band’s colourful charisma and uplifting charm. Flowing with funk-fuelled hooks and a sparkling danceable allure, it showcases the smooth lilt of Poppy Hankin’s distinctive vocals perfectly. Fizzing with all the shimmering blissful zest that we’ve come to know and love from Girl Ray, it’s the perfect Friday anthem; just one listen will elevate your spirits, leaving you ready to hit the dancefloor/roller-disco/bedroom with a revived sense of optimism.

Of the track, Hankin explains:

“The lyrics on this single were inspired by the straight-to-the-heart simplicity of the disco greats. I wrote it while missing my partner while on tour in 2020, and it plays on themes of new love and self-doubt. Musically we took reference from the nu-disco resurgence that seemed to be taking off in 2020, in particular from the likes of Kylie Minogue (Disco), Jessie Ware (What’s Your Pleasure?), Dua Lipa (Future Nostalgia) and Róisín Murphy (Róisín Machine). We were really inspired by all of these women re-imagining disco.”

Track Of The Day: Gemma Cullingford – ‘Walking In The Air’

Following acclaim for her debut solo album Let Me Speak from the likes of John Kennedy, Jamz Supernova and Amy Lame earlier this year, Gemma Cullingford (who you may know as one half of epic electro-punk duo Sink Ya Teeth) has now shared her own festive offering.

A unique rendition of The Snowman’s ‘Walking In The Air’, it’s propelled by immersive glitchy beats and a haunting, captivating energy. As soaring vocals flow alongside the pulsating, effervescent soundscape, Cullingford has transformed this emotive classic into a swirling, strangely dark – yet instantly uplifting – slice of fizzing alt disco.

With The Snowman apparently being the only Christmas film that Gemma can bear to watch, she explains of the track:

“I remember as a child watching The Snowman and owning the picture book, both of which were just magical and strangely soothing… I’d been toying with the idea of covering it for the last few years. This is the song that represents the film and I decided to ‘Gemma it up’ a bit...”

Video Premiere: Bugeye – ‘Don’t Stop’ (Feral Five Reset Remix)

Celebrating the first anniversary of their incredible debut album Ready Steady Bang, GIHE faves Bugeye have collaborated with some of the UK’s most creative DJs, producers, and bands to cook up an exciting charity remix album, kicking off with newly refreshed single ‘Don’t Stop’, remixed by Feral Five.

The electro duo have brilliantly drawn out the synth tingles and stomping beat of the original track, propelling ‘Don’t Stop’ into the realms of a club banger; all glittering tambourines and charged guitar licks.

Of the collaboration, Feral Five explain: “We love Bugeye! Ready Steady Bang is an absolute instant classic album. The chance to get our hands on one of the tunes and Feralize the freak out of it was irresistible”. ‘Feralized’ is an apt descriptor; Angela Martin’s formidable vocals have been perfectly spliced up into a commanding siren call to the dance-floor, ramping up the sparkly beats of electro whilst highlighting the song’s grunge-fuelled rock roots.

If an album of reinvented tunes wasn’t enough, all profits of the remixes will be donated to Newham charity The Magpie Project, fighting against mother and child homelessness. Angela from Bugeye explains: “Our debut album is very dear to our hearts so being able to explore new possibilities across a number of genres was dead exciting to us. We feel blown away that so many talented people wanted to work with us too. Being able to do this for a Newham charity was very important. Paula and I grew up there. It was, and still is a very poor area, one of the poorest in the UK. We know we’re not going to change the world with just one remix album, but if we can help even a single family sleep safe and sound at night, we will have achieved something incredible“.

Accompanying the ‘Don’t Stop’ remix is psychedelic brand new video. Artfully constructed with vibrant, trippy imagery, it’s a perfect visualisation of the track’s swirling euphoric energy; a completely immersive experience for eyes and ears alike. Watch the video, for the first time, here:

Track Of The Day: Gemma Cullingford – ‘Wide Boys’

Known as one half of GIHE faves Sink Ya Teeth, musician and songwriter Gemma Cullingford has now shared the video for her first solo single. Ahead of the release of a debut album this summer, during the band’s downtime throughout the pandemic Gemma has been working on creations of a more personal nature, and it’s just what our ears need right now.

Propelled by throbbing tribal beats and infectious bass, ‘Wide Boys’ reflects on the need for us to wake up and take back control from those in power. Driven by a racing energy and interweaving immense hooks, including a fiercely flowing flute solo, it’s an instantly catchy, funk-fuelled slice of electro-tinged disco pop. Retaining some of the danceable groove that we’ve come to know and love from Sink Ya Teeth, ‘Wide Boys’ maintains its own unique majestic musicality and sweeping empowering zest. Stirring in sentiment, yet uplifting in sound, Gemma Cullingford has created a colourful call to arms for these desperate times. Of the track, Gemma explains:

“It’s a message to the average man and woman on the street, many of whom it seems have been brainwashed by both those in power and by the far right. It’s saying that every single one of us are being controlled as part of a big, sinister game. This is a response to my own awakening to that…”
