EP: LIERS – ‘Elixir’

Formed by lead singer Liz Seaver, Dublin’s LIERS spent most of 2018 cutting their teeth on the Irish live music scene. Performing at Electric Picnic and supporting bands like Fangclub (alongside Vulpynes) at popular Dublin venue Whelan’s; LIERS have taken a few moments away from the stage to share their debut EP Elixir.

Released in January of this year, the record opens with title track ‘Elixir’. It’s a blend of 90’s tinged guitar sounds, with quiet verses leading in to loud choruses in true grunge style. LIERS cite Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Alanis Morrissette as some of their influences, so it’s clear from the offset their EP is going to be full of power chords and powerful vocals. ‘Universal Female’ flows in the same vein, with Liz’s strong voice leading over a rush of alternative sound, designed for when you’re feeling “perfectly imperfect”.

Third track ‘Can’t Got Back’ is a melodic reminder to reluctantly move forward, even if it makes you rage and cry, whilst the penultimate ‘Realise’ is a plunge in to heavier riffs and percussion, detailing an emotional breakthrough in its lyricism. Closing track ‘Host’ is a shimmering slice of open-hearted garage rock, ending the EP on a strongly optimistic note.

Whilst their name suggests deception, it’s clear that LIERS are able to communicate their love of 90s music in an honest and melodic fashion through the five tracks that form their debut EP Elixir. Liz, Ed (lead guitar), Stephen (bass) and Ronan (drummer) should take pride in this impressive debut.

Track Of The Day: LIERS – ‘Host’

A shimmering slice of garage rock glory: North Dublin’s LIERS have shared their latest single ‘Host’. The release coincides with the news that the band have been announced as one of the winners of Ireland’s RTE 2FM’s ‘Play The Picnic’ Competition, which will seem them take to the stage at Electric Picnic on the weekend of August 31st.

LIERS released their debut single ‘Universal Feamle’ just a few months ago, and with now with second track ‘Host’ under their belts; summer 2018 looks promising for the band. Vocalist and guitarist Liz explains further:

“We were delighted with the response and reaction to our first single ‘Universal Female’. It gave us a great chance to get out and chase the gigs and play to buzzed-up crowds. It’s an exciting time to be on the Irish scene with our sound, and we’re very grateful to the DJs who gave us the spins needed so far and of course to our growing base of fans, many of who voted for us to get to play the Picnic and we really want to thank everyone for their support.

We are very grateful to 2FM for the opportunity to play the Picnic as it’s been one of our biggest goals so far. The proceeds of the voting went to the Jack and Jill Foundation so it’s a very worthy cause to support also. We can’t wait to land in Stradbally. We just want to keep being loud, have fun and show people what we’re here to do”

Sounds good to us! Listen to ‘Host’ below and follow LIERS on Facebook for more updates.

‘Host’ is available to stream on Spotify & download from Bandcamp now.

WATCH: Pillow Queens – ‘Favourite’

Can’t decide what you love more: dogs or new music? Well, thanks to Dublin’s Pillow Queens you don’t have to. The indie band have shared a new video to accompany their recent single ‘Favourite’ and it’s a perfect combination of the two.

“The video was borne from the artistic insights of the wonderful Bob Gallagher, combined with our sheer passion and fondness for all things canine,” the band explain about their dog-tastic new offering. “The idea was to bring to life a work which followed the retro look of old Antiques Roadshow episodes and was heavily influenced by Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Best in Show and 80’s prom portraits or – in the case of this particular video – “pawtraits” of dogs and their owners. The National Show centre was the setting for the video while the individual “pawtraits” were shot in All Out Design Studios and feature a mixture of friends of the band and doggo-loving volunteers.”

‘Favourite’ is taken from Pillow Queens’ forthcoming EP State of The State, which is set to be released via Bristol-based label Specialist Subject on 16th March. The band will be touring the UK & Ireland to celebrate their new record, starting with a show at the Irish Cultural Centre on the 16th alongside Delorentos, Video Blue & TAYNE (RSVP here).
