LIVE: Nik Void (supporting Gum Takes Tooth) – Electrowerkz 25.01.19

Surrounded by smoke and bathed in flickering coloured lights, Nik Void gave a masterclass in how to perform electronic music solo at Electrowerkz on Friday night. Supporting duo Gum Takes Tooth at their album launch for Baba Yaga’s Hut; Void’s obscure but intriguing soundscapes infiltrated the heads of her large crowd.

Positioned behind a desk overflowing with wires and synths, Void skillfully tuned and triggered her equipment, creating intense waves of experimental electronic noise. Many will be aware of Void’s history as one half of Factory Floor, and as one third of Carter Tutti Void, alongside Cosey Fanni Tutti and Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle/Chris & Cosey) – but even without an understanding of her previous work, Void’s solo set is a truly remarkable experience.

The transitions between tracks are seamless, despite Void being open to “the creation of space for ‘mistakes’” in her music. The mood and tone are constantly in flux; sometimes droney and desolate, other times euphoric and uplifting. Despite her laid-back performance style, it’s easy to see that Void is a woman who is entirely immersed and in control of the jungle of wires that surround her. She moves with ease between synthesizers, making her technical set-up look like it requires minimal effort to manipulate.

There is something transformative about her sound; she communicates complex emotions in unconventional ways with only a few voice samples. She blends elements of techno, ambient, avant-garde and noise into a truly stunning performance, which is made all the more intense by the venue it’s set in. Track names and timings become unnecessary, as Void’s electronic craft-work eludes any kind of labeling or conventional measures/restraint.

At the end of her set, Void graciously bowed her head to the appreciative applause directed her way. Whether you’re a loyal follower or a new addition to the fan club, Nik Void’s live set is definitely going to appeal to anyone interested in diverse, original electronic music.

Track Of The Day: Kill J – ‘Dead Weight Soldier’

Copenhagen’s Kill J is back with a new track and accompanying set of visuals titled ‘Dead Weight Soldier’ – and revenge is at the forefront of her mind. Following her fiercely political release ‘Strange Fruits of The Sea’, this is the second track from her forthcoming album Superposition, which is set to be a poignant and unapologetic listen.

Kill J combines her usual bitter sweet vocals and distracting electronic beats to give ‘Dead Weight Soldier’ a startling sonic power. The music video, directed by J6 Films is equally as intriguing; shot in monochrome and set in a bleak industrial environment.

Speaking about the track, Kill J explains: “It’s based on a revenge fantasy. A retaliation against an incompetent man that I have encountered quite a few times in different forms throughout my life: full of hot air, an egomaniac driven by sex and power. A person that has no real talent but is very good at taking credit for other people’s achievements.”

Kill J’s ruthless musical efforts have kept us hooked over the last few months, and we’re eager to hear more from this unusual artist. Listen to ‘Dead Weight Soldier’ below and follow Kill J on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Boy Harsher – ‘Fate’

Massachusetts duo Boy Harsher have shared the second track from their forthcoming new album, Careful, which will be released on February 1st via their own label Nude Club Records. Titled ‘Fate’, the new song is four minutes of off-kilter synths, breathy seductive vocals and dance inducing beats.

The track is accompanied by a startling set of visuals, directed and produced by Bryan M. Ferguso. The video shows a blood-thirsty young woman hunting her prey against a dark cityscape – reminiscent of cult 80’s film Lost Boys (minus the mullets, of course).

Speaking about ‘Fate’, Boy Harsher explain: “It’s a song about how there’s no amount of running that can prevent you from your life. You are raw and beat-down, yet you will continue to behave the same way – ‘Fate’ is your own trouble, a magnetic force that’s stuck on you forever.”

Immerse yourself in the sound of ‘Fate’ below and catch the pair playing live at Heaven on 27th February.

PREMIERE: Party Fears – ‘Sun King II’

DIY disco punks Party Fears have shared their new single ‘Sun King II’ taken from their upcoming EP Just Friends, and we’re delighted to be premiering it here on Get In Her Ears!

Recorded at Start Together Studios in Belfast by Ryan McGroarty and mixed by Robert Kelly, the track was first written in early 2016 during the run up to the US election and just before the Brexit vote *shudders*. It targets “toxic masculinity, crash economics and rampant capitalism” but despite its turbulent context; ‘Sun King II’ is an upbeat, electro-disco anthem brought to life by forceful drum beats and defiant vocals.

Comprised of Northern Irish native Maggie Devlin and Adelaide’s Eilis Frawley, Party Fears’ music packs a glistening punch reminiscent of our faves Le Tigre, and ‘Sun King II’ is another example of the duo’s ability to take something negative and turn it in to a cathartic, dizzy antidote to the modern world.

Listen to the new single below ahead of its official release on December 14th, and follow Party Fears on Facebook for more updates.
