EP: Stef Fi – ‘Girlhood’

A poignant reflection on grief, growth, and grappling with the repercussions of a racist world; Stef Fi has shared her debut EP, Girlhood, via Sistah Punk Records. Best known as the vocalist & guitarist of black feminist punk band Big Joanie, Stef Fi (aka Stephanie Phillips) has shared four alt-punk tracks that provide “sketches of a girl” resisting hate, and trying to find hope in the harshest of realities.

Mellow opener ‘What Remains’ broods with quiet intensity, setting the pensive, yet resistant tone of the EP. “Open wide and swallow divine” Stef directs, over steady beats and ominous guitar riffs. Her punk attitude breaks through on following track ‘Nowhere’. The quiet, uncertain lyrics of the verses contrast well with the distorted riffs and defiant words in the chorus.

“This town will be the death of me”, muses Stef on the eponymous ‘Girlhood’. The song was inspired by the footage of police attacking a young black girl at a Texas pool party in 2015. Extrapolating on what the victim may have felt, Stef delivers the line “I had spoken then I saw, I knew it was my time to fall” with calm resignation and maturity, powerfully contrasting with the violence the young girl experienced. It’s a jarring listen, but one that’s delivered with care and gentility.

‘The Garden’ closes the EP, with its rolling riffs, rumbling percussion, and more of Stef’s yearning vocals. Despite being rooted in inequality, Stef Fi’s Girlhood is a considerate, tender offering that showcases her talent as a songwriter, and as a woman who is dedicated to spotlighting the struggles of others.

Preview & Playlist: Visions Festival Announces Further Acts

With The Great Escape kicking off this weekend, we’re all getting well and truly in the mood for festival season!

Our favourite East London festival, Visions, is back for its sixth year on Saturday 4th August, and has now announced even more fantastic acts to add to their line up, in addition to the first wave.

Taking place across different warehouse venues, arts spaces and churches in London Fields, Visions promotes an eclectic array of new music, as well as a host of craft beers, street food stalls, record fairs, and even a dog show!

Now, to add to the likes of Chastity Belt, Duds, Girlhood and Sampa The Great, Visions have added a host of new artists to the bill, including Marika Hackman, Yak, Sorry, Lone and No Age, as well as announcing Milk – a club night curated by Foals’ Yannis Phillipakis.

In addition, Visions is thrilled to announce that FUCKED UP will return to the UK on Friday 3rd August to play a special Visions Presents Friday event with special guests to be announced. This will be the band’s first London show in 3 years, ahead of them releasing their eagerly anticipated new album.

GUIDE & PLAYLIST: The Great Escape 2018

The Great Escape Festival kicks off in just 7 days time (17th-19th May), and we’re ready to tread Brighton’s pebble beach, chomp on some chips, and trek around town trying to catch the best new music acts.

The prolific 3-day event is renowned for championing new music from all genres, and their female-friendly line-up (which Mari celebrated in her recent article about women & festival lineups for Trash) features some of our all time favourite bands. Dream Wife, Queen Zee, REWS, Pillow Queens & Amaroun will all be strutting their stuff by the seaside over the course of the weekend, but we’re excited to discover some brand new talent too.

PREVIEW: Visions Festival Announces First Wave Of Artists
