Get In Her Ears Live @ The Windmill w/ Heavy Heart, 23.05.18

We were extremely excited to host our first night at legendary Windmill in Brixton on Wednesday. Having been a favourite London venue of ours for years now, to be able to put on some of our favourite bands there was really quite an honour.

The night kicks off in breath-taking fashion with London duo Scrounge. As front woman Lucy’s immense vocals rage alongside whirring, scuzzy hooks and Luke’s thrashing beats, the sound that the two of them create is truly impressive. One of the most exciting bands I’ve come across in a long time, I’m left completely blown away by Scrounge’s intense outpourings, and can’t wait to see what they have in store of us next.

Next up is another duo; this time in the form of Brighton’s Hanya. Treating us to their twinkling garage-rock sounds, front woman Heather’s impassioned, soulful vocals cast as all under their spell in an instant. As Hanya’s shimmering offerings flow with a subtle, gritty edge, it’s a simply dreamy set. And, as Heather shares with the crowd that this may be their favourite ever gig, I start to realise it may be mine too!

Penultimate band of the night, Tokyo Taboo, have wowed us more than once with their vibrant, energy-fuelled live set. And tonight is no different. As front woman Dolly Daggerz takes to the stage to blast out set opener ‘Make It Out Alive’, she starts out as she means to go on – dazzling the crowd, not only with an amazing amount of glitter and glowing heels, but with her unique, empowering charisma. Another unforgettable set from the band, Tokyo Taboo never fail to deliver.

Drawing the night to a close are Heavy Heart. As Anna Vincent’s luscious vocals flow seamlessly alongside spellbinding, multi-layered soundscapes, it’s impossible not to fall in love with this band’s captivating grace. Transfixed by their intricate musicality and majestic psychedelic haze, I’m left in awe of Heavy Heart’s totally dreamy offerings.

Huge thanks to the four amazing bands who played for us on Wednesday; to The Windmill for having us, and to everyone who made the trip out. It was a dream of a night, and we can’t wait to come back soon!

Get In Her Ears Live @ The Finsbury w/ Suzie Stapleton, 11.05.18

Following a host of super amazing bands playing for us recently – including LIINES, Witch Fever, The Magnettes, H.Grimace, Ghum and Dream Nails  – we were back at The Finsbury on Friday night for another jam-packed night of the best new music.

Noise Noir kick off the night in style with their sultry desert-rock and racing, blues-ridden hooks. With their snarling energy and stomping sounds, expect big things from this exciting new band…

Next up, awesome electro-pop artist Gaptooth wows us with her immense keytar skills and insightful social commentary; topping off the set with an ‘End Of Patriarchy Disco’ that we all so badly need.

Penultimate band of the night Fightmilk deliver an immense, energy-fuelled set, despite front-woman Lily being almost voiceless. After blasting out the wonderfully catchy power punk-pop of ‘Pity Party’, they enlist a range of willing volunteers to help sing the remaining songs. Despite feeling bad for Lily’s throat, it’s an unforgettable and joy-filled half hour, showcasing the unity of the DIY spirit and impressive improvisation skills of this band.

Bringing the night to a close, Australian artist Suzie Stapleton captivates us all with the raw power of her deep vocals and haunting, other-worldly splendour. With impressive musicianship and dark majesty, she casts us all under her spell.

HUGE thanks to all the amazing artists who played for us last night. And we’re very excited to be hosting another gig this month, this time at  Brixton Windmill, with Heavy Heart, Tokyo Taboo, Hanya and Scrounge.

LIVE (Photos): Wye Oak @ Deaf Institute, Manchester, 04.05.18

After sitting in traffic chaos for hours and seriously contemplating having to scratch the gig, Wye Oak arrive at Manchester’s Deaf Institute in time to throw the gear on stage, do the world’s fastest sound check and then play an utterly storming set. Though drawing heavily on brand new album The Louder I Call The Faster It Runs might have been a risk, the crowd are 101% on side, all the way to the back of the room.

Julie Hawk’s Top Ten Female Artists @ Liverpool Sound City

With Liverpool Sound City coming up this weekend, we spoke to Julie from GIHE favourites HAWK about her top ten picks of female bands and artists to catch at the festival.

HAWK will be playing at Liverpool Sound City on Saturday 5th May at Birdies Bar for The Local.

Average Sex – Ugly Strangers
I can’t think of a better time of year to discover this band. Hazy summer slacker vibes
summing up my lowest-common-denominator feelings with sweet guitar refrains and
refreshingly blunt lyrics.

Peaness – Same Place
Super hooky with really satisfying vocal harmonies throughout. I am dancing in the mirror in
the ’90s all over again.

The Orielles – Sugar Tastes Like Salt
I have been wanting to see this band for ages, mostly because Mari from GIHE always has
such good things to say about them! Sugary guitar sounds cut through dissonant hooks and
dripping attitude. Roll on LSC!

Wye Oak – Civilian
Okay, I know Wye Oak has released plenty of stunning music since ‘Civilian’ but this song
gives me such intense nostalgia for my early days in London trying to find some foothold in
music. I love how it constantly rumbles forward from a place of reflection to one of intense
movement and presence.

Maria Kelly – Small Talk
My friend and label-buddy. This woman’s voice has a special place in my soul.

Amaroun – Made a Fire
This is just wonderfully dreamy, infectious alt-pop. But there’s nothing throw-away about it – the depth and tone of her voice takes her music from catchy to deeply resonant.

Super Organism – Everybody Wants to be Famous
When I first heard this song, I decided immediately that it would probably be the soundtrack
to my summer. That was back in January, so we’re nearly there.

Berries – Faults
I saw these guys last summer at Head for the Hills and was totally floored. Since then, their music has been there for me when I need to not give a fuck. Thanks Berries!

Rews – Shine
This band are an absolute power-house and deserve all the attention they’re getting right
now. I’m told they must be seen live to be believed, so they are top of my LSC bucket list!

Gaffatape Sandy – Beehive
Probably my favourite new discovery from the LSC line-up! Energetic garage punk with
interweaving lead vocals. For nights when pre-drinks turns into a perfectly messy house
party.
