Julie Hawk’s Top Ten Female Artists @ Liverpool Sound City

With Liverpool Sound City coming up this weekend, we spoke to Julie from GIHE favourites HAWK about her top ten picks of female bands and artists to catch at the festival.

HAWK will be playing at Liverpool Sound City on Saturday 5th May at Birdies Bar for The Local.

Read about Julie’s picks here (including some of our own faves!), and have a listen to the playlist in preparation for the weekend!

Average Sex – Ugly Strangers
I can’t think of a better time of year to discover this band. Hazy summer slacker vibes
summing up my lowest-common-denominator feelings with sweet guitar refrains and
refreshingly blunt lyrics.

Peaness – Same Place
Super hooky with really satisfying vocal harmonies throughout. I am dancing in the mirror in
the ’90s all over again.

The Orielles – Sugar Tastes Like Salt
I have been wanting to see this band for ages, mostly because Mari from GIHE always has
such good things to say about them! Sugary guitar sounds cut through dissonant hooks and
dripping attitude. Roll on LSC!

Wye Oak – Civilian
Okay, I know Wye Oak has released plenty of stunning music since ‘Civilian’ but this song
gives me such intense nostalgia for my early days in London trying to find some foothold in
music. I love how it constantly rumbles forward from a place of reflection to one of intense
movement and presence.

Maria Kelly – Small Talk
My friend and label-buddy. This woman’s voice has a special place in my soul.

Amaroun – Made a Fire
This is just wonderfully dreamy, infectious alt-pop. But there’s nothing throw-away about it – the depth and tone of her voice takes her music from catchy to deeply resonant.

Super Organism – Everybody Wants to be Famous
When I first heard this song, I decided immediately that it would probably be the soundtrack
to my summer. That was back in January, so we’re nearly there.

Berries – Faults
I saw these guys last summer at Head for the Hills and was totally floored. Since then, their music has been there for me when I need to not give a fuck. Thanks Berries!

Rews – Shine
This band are an absolute power-house and deserve all the attention they’re getting right
now. I’m told they must be seen live to be believed, so they are top of my LSC bucket list!

Gaffatape Sandy – Beehive
Probably my favourite new discovery from the LSC line-up! Energetic garage punk with
interweaving lead vocals. For nights when pre-drinks turns into a perfectly messy house
party.

Anna Calvi Announces Tour Dates & Brand New Material

After a series of teasing and inspired images across the realms of social media, guitar chanteuse, two-time Mercury Prize nominee, and London’s own Anna Calvi has announced a series of three solo shows due to take place in Berlin, Paris, and London this June.

Calvi’s 2011 self-titled debut record was pretty fucking rad and 2013’s incredibly personal (and equally as fab) follow-up, One Breath, made the sophomore album curse look like a sentiently feeble and try hard myth. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Anna—alongside musical soulmate, Mally Harpaz, onstage and once you have, there’s no way on earth you don’t want to keep going to see her again and again.

While her third album has yet to be announced, the message delivered with the tour dates was one that verified that it’s just around the corner and that all three shows will be full of brand new yet-to-be-heard tracks.

Several European festivals will also have the pleasure of Anna’s performances but these three shows, in particular, are the beginning of something new for Anna Calvi, and at Get in Her Ears we cannot wait to see what’s in store.

From Anna:

“I remember looking into your eyes, I remember our energy, I remember you testing me, I remember me testing you, I remember feeling the most alive in those moments, I remember the dam breaking, like a primal scream. I want it again, I want to see you again.. This new music is everything I wanted it to be. I want you to hear what I’ve created and laboured on with love for so long, for you, for us.”

From us, one of our favourites:

Tour dates June 2018:

12th June – Berlin, Germany – Berghain
15th June – Paris, France – La Gaîté Lyrique
19th June – London, UK – Heaven

LIVE: Hinds @ Electric Brixton, 19.04.18

Following their debut in 2016, and having wowed us at Visions Festival back in 2015, and Green Man Festival last year, I was super keen to make the hat-trick and catch vivacious Spanish quartet Hinds live at the relatively local venue of Electric Brixton.

Bringing with them the Madrid sunshine (and commenting that some of us “even look a little burnt”), following support sets from Horsey and Baywaves, Hinds bound onto the stage, immediately oozing their truly infectious charisma and kicking things off with ‘The Club’, opening track from their brand new album I Don’t Run. 2016’s ‘Chilli Town’ is greeted by whoops and cheers as the band continue to exude their joyous, jangly scuzz.

With each moment spent with this band, the sheer sense of glee heightens, such is the sunny spirit of Carlotta, Ana, Ade and Amber. Propelled by an unrelenting, uplifting energy, they launch into a vibrant cover of Kevin Ayers’ ‘Caribbean Moon’ as the crowd dance along in buoyant bliss.

The sense of delight remains when Carlotta gets told by the venue that crowd-surfing is not allowed; despite the disappointment, she continues in typical, beautifully breezy fashion for the next few songs. Even when introducing ‘Tester’ with the evident bitterness of a past relationship – “We repeat six times in this song ‘should I’ve known before you were also banging her?'” – the mood remains as the band continue to blast out their feisty, frenzied lo-fi garage rock.

Following the cacophonous bliss of personal favourite ‘Bamboo’, fellow Madrid band Baywaves join the stage and Hinds show the world (Brixton) that they make their own rules, as Carlotta and Ana launch into the crowd and surf away, their bodies floating atop a mass of adoring, sweaty fans. A glorious chaos ensues, bringing the set to a momentary close.

Returning to the stage for a few more fantastically energy-fuelled blasts, Hinds have treated us to a perfectly euphoric evening; a most fitting accompaniment to Thursday’s fleeting heatwave, it’s sunny and spirited in all the right ways, leaving me grinning from cheek to cheek in utter bliss.
