NEW TRACK: Chelsea Wolfe – ‘Everything Turns Blue’

A shadowy rumination on the convoluted process of healing from an unhealthy relationship, Chelsea Wolfe has shared her latest single ‘Everything Turns Blue’. Taken from her upcoming seventh album, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, which is set for release via Loma Vista on 9th February 2024, the track is a hypnotic blend of compelling vocals, brooding keys and brittle beats which reflect the aching sincerity of true self-liberation.

Following on from her previous singles ‘Dusk’, ‘Whispers In The Echo Chamber‘ and ‘Tunnel Lights’, Wolfe’s new track continues her narrative of recovery, rediscovering self autonomy, and redefining what resilience both looks and sounds like. ‘Everything Turns Blue’ is about “finding yourself again after a long era of being part of something toxic,” she explains. “Making a split with someone after 10 years, 20 years, 30 years — there’s going to be some high highs and low lows as you begin to process it all.” Wolfe captures these emotional fluctuations succinctly in her lyrics. “What do I have to do to heal you out of me?” she questions throughout the track, before ultimately emerging from the shadows feeling stronger and more self assured.

Wolfe describes her upcoming album She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She as “a rebirth”, breaking the physical and emotional chains that once prohibited this cathartic process. “It’s a story of freeing yourself from situations and patterns that are holding you back in order to become self-empowered,” she explains in more detail. It’s “an invitation to step into your authenticity,” and as she poetically concludes: “like the dark moon, that void space can feel unpredictable and looming, but it also holds so much potential, mystery, and excitement.”

NEW TRACK: Chelsea Wolfe – ‘Whispers In The Echo Chamber’

A potent blend of shadowy industrial sounds and her trademark captivating vocals, Chelsea Wolfe has shared her latest single ‘Whispers In The Echo Chamber’. Taken from her newly announced seventh album, She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She, which is set for release via Loma Vista on 9th February 2024, the track is a heavy rumination on trusting your inner voice and following your own intuition.

Exploring the cyclical nature of healing, Wolfe’s new album is described as “a rebirth”, breaking the physical and emotional chains that prohibit this cathartic process. “It’s a record about the past self reaching out to the present self reaching out to the future self to summon change, growth, and guidance,” she explains in more detail. “It’s a story of freeing yourself from situations and patterns that are holding you back in order to become self-empowered. It’s an invitation to step into your authenticity.”

Written alongside her longtime collaborators multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm, drummer Jess Gowrie and guitarist Bryan Tulao, Wolfe has crafted a dynamic, genre-blending manifesto of self-autonomy across ten tracks, with latest single ‘Whispers in the Echo Chamber’ spotlighting this in all its glory. Finding strength and power in the calmness of a whisper, as ominous synths and metallic riffs swirl around her, Wolfe is “bathing in the blood” of who she used to be – emerging cleansed and cutting as ever.

The track is accompanied by a stunning monochrome video, directed by Geoge Gallardo Kattah and filmed in Colombia. Wolfe explains the concept behind the visuals: “This video feels like a love story between myself and my sleep paralysis entity, who, for the sake of this video, represents a calm inner voice cutting through mental chatter and anxiety to help guide me towards a more authentic path. From the inward to the outward, this entity shows me the expansiveness of new possibilities, if only I’ll take the first difficult steps.”

Chelsea Wolfe has also announced a London headline show at Heaven on Sunday 21st April 2024. Tickets are on sale now.

ALBUM: Soccer Mommy – ‘Sometimes, Forever’

Inspired by the concept that neither sorrow nor happiness are permanent, Sophie Allison aka Soccer Mommy cleverly nods to synth sub-genres on Sometimes, Forever. From new wave to goth, the album broadens Allison’s repertoire without abandoning the compelling melodies she’s known for.

Throughout, Sometimes, Forever is informed by historic musical movements. It’s entirely plausible that the album has been described as “a moodboard of vintage touchstones”. ‘Unholy Affliction’ and ‘Following Eyes’ both echo the 1990s grunge scene, with the use of guitars in the latter particularly drawing inspiration from Nirvana’s ‘Heart Shaped Box’. Likewise, opening track, ‘Bones’ wouldn’t feel out of place on Alvvays’ eponymous 2014 album.

Thankfully, Sometimes, Forever falls short of simply recycling old sound as the album transcends its influences. Later track ‘With U’ and lead single ‘Shotgun’ both incorporate heavier synth notes. The juxtaposition between this sound and the previously mentioned tracks separates Soccer Mommy from a sea of grunge and indie-pop imitators. The synth notes should come as no surprise though – Sometimes, Forever was produced by Daniel Lopatin of Oneohtrix Point Never, most notable for the score of ‘Uncut Gems’ and The Weeknd’s chart-topping, ‘Dawn FM’. Lopatin has an unbounded synth vocabulary, which particularly shines through on ‘With U’.

Radiating an overwhelming theme of blueness, Soccer Mommy’s album is partially galvanised by the push and pull between Allison’s yearning to produce meaningful art and her scepticism about artless careerism. The echoey vocals on ‘Fire In The Driveway’ accompanied by nothing but acoustics certainly represents this disposition. Interestingly, the downcast lyrics depicting elitism on Sometimes, Forever follow Soccer Mommy’s past successes. Strikingly, her studio debut, Clean, is one of the most beloved albums of the 2010s lo-fi bedroom-pop scene. Similarly, her sophomore effort, color theory, was GRAMMY nominated. As explorations of artistic integrity go, Sometimes, Forever is a brave effort.
