New Track: Frankie Rose – ‘Anything’

Set to release her fifth studio album this Spring, New York based artist Frankie Rose has now shared her latest single ‘Anything’ – an inspiring, exploratory track. While following the latest release of her own interpretation of The Cure’s ‘Seventeen Seconds’, Rose has dived into something fresh at this time in her career. 

Filled with beautiful ’80s-inspired electro-pop nuances, in ‘Anything’ Rose showcases her ability to fuse together new sounds with a hybrid of inspirations of her past, creating something that sounds refreshingly ultra-modern. Nostalgia for post-punk remains while ‘Anything’ glamourises grunge to a shiny finish of crisp vocals across a sweeping electronic landscape. At its core, ‘Anything’ is confident and undimmed while grabbing an array of eclectic influences into its mix of excitement for the now. 

Slowly building with sharp drums and choral synth pads, as Rose’s vocals float on top of her mix with an irresistibly catchy and contagious allure, ‘Anything’ feels like a poignant reflection, but specifically one that does not feel too heavy – executing the idea that we are in a constant state of learning. 

‘Anything’ feels like accepting that we make mistakes and must move on from them, learning from them in a way that offers not only self-disappointment, but a cycle of valuable growth. Frankie Rose is all-seeing in ‘Anything’, as she brings us along on a beautifully cathartic, optimistic sonic journey.

Track Of The Day: Maria Uzor – ‘Winner’ (feat. Emily Winng)

Following last year’s epic debut EP, Innocence and Worldliness, and having captivated us with the euphoric energy of her live show, Maria Uzor (of Sink Ya Teeth) has now shared another taster of her innovative solo material.

Originally released as a vinyl only B-side to ‘Permission’ on Heaven’s Lathe in March this year, ‘Winner‘ was written by Uzor in little more than 24 hours and features her good friend Emily Winng on vocal duties. Building with propulsive, immersive beats and a frenzied, whirring splendour, a swirling, glitchy soundscape is created oozing a dark, deep house allure and thumping techno energy. Racing with a frantic delirium, the track climaxes with the addition of Winng’s rich, soulful vocals, soaring with shades of the danceable drive of Moloko as gritty undertones swell beneath the surface. A majestic summer anthem for all those who like a bit of electro scuzz with their sunshine.

‘Winner’ is accompanied by an entertaining home-made video. With the concept conceived by Winng, and shot by Joel Benjamin, it plays on the meaning of the song title – depicting a mysterious bloody brawl between two friends. Of the video, Winng explains:

“Because of the song title, I thought a fight that continues to different locations throughout the duration could work. Maria and I have been friends for years so it felt totally comfortable getting down and dirty. She’s tough though!”

Uzor adds:

“It was so much fun filming the video… Inspiration came from all over the place; old kung fu flicks, Zombie B-movies, Street-fighter, Adam & The Ants, and definitely a bit of Prison Cell Block H in there too…”

WATCH: FRÄULEIN – ‘By The Water’

Originally hailing from Northern Ireland and the Netherlands respectively, London-based duo Joni Samuels and Karsten van der Tol – aka Fräulein – are fast becoming total faves here at Get In Her Ears. Now, following their majestic last single ‘Belly’ and having completely blown me away at my first post-covid gig at The Windmill a few weeks back, they have now shared a visceral new offering.

Propelled by a gritty, swirling energy and raw, impassioned drive, ‘By The Water’ reflects on the difficulty we can often have in moving on from events of our past. Building with a subtle, brooding melancholy and eerily captivating allure, the track showcases the stark, soaring power of Joni’s vocals, creating an utterly immersive wall of grunge-fuelled splendour. Yet another example of this innovative duo’s consistent ability to develop their exquisite musical prowess with each new release, firmly cementing them as ones to watch right now. Of the track, the band explain:

“It touches on the contrasting emotions often invoked by looking back at events from your past. The track is about beauty & nighttime & romanticising times & living in the past, even though you know it’s shit and that it can keep you stagnant.”

LISTEN: LIINES – ‘Keep On Going’

With their last single ‘Sorry‘ reaching over 100,000 streams on Spotify and with acclaim from the likes of Sleaford Mods, Radio X’s John Kennedy and BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, longterm GIHE faves LIINES seem to be consistently going from strength. Now, ahead of a few tour dates coming up this month, the Manchester trio – comprising of Zoe McVeigh, Leila Sullivan and Anna Donigan – have shared a potent new offering.

Propelled by a frenetic sense of urgency as Leila’s emphatic beats set the tone, ‘Keep On Going‘ gradually builds with intricate musical layers as gritty, whirring hooks kick in alongside Donigan’s deep, throbbing bass.
