Track Of The Day: Sea Change – ‘Stepping Out’

An electronic exploration of an ambiguous metamorphosis; Norwegian artist Sea Change has shared her latest single ‘Stepping Out’. It’s taken from her new album INSIDE, which is set for release on 15th November.

Through a fusion of disjointed beats and atmospheric synth textures, Sea Change (aka Ellen Sunde) navigates her ideas about transforming into an animal on her new single. The track was written after she relocated to Berlin, and during her many trips to LA, which resulted in the seven tracks that make up her new album.

Following on from 2015’s Breakage LP, new record INSIDE focuses on what happens when Sunde swaps over-thinking for living in the moment. She explains further: “When I made this record I tried to channel the same state of mind I have when I go clubbing – not overthinking everything, like I usually do, but instead embracing my impulses; working intuitively, almost anti-intellectual. I learned that that’s where I am able to get to the core of what I need to express and that I just had to trust those decisions”.

LISTEN: Peaness – ‘Breakfast’

Chester band Peaness‘ first new music in two years isn’t a tribute to the humble hash brown, but a soundtrack to accompany Britain’s (potential?) exit from the EU. With its delayed release coinciding with the somewhat confused state of politics at the moment, the band have now shared their new single ‘Breakfast’. Of the track, the band explain: “We’ve released this… as Britain says goodbye to the European Union and faces the future alone.”

And ‘Breakfast’ really does feel like a break-up song. You can hear the sadness in the melancholic vocals and slow, rhythmic guitar. But it’s weirdly uplifting too; it’s so personal, honest and relatable that you feel like Peaness have got inside your head, stolen your thoughts and added them to a jaunty tune. By the time the chorus hits, you can’t help but join in.

“I’m not really sure exactly what they’re hoping for,” they sing, “I’m not sure they knew what they were in for.” Well, neither are we. But, if the world ends in a couple of weeks, at least we can show solidarity and have a bit of a shimmy to this.

LISTEN: Show Boy – ‘Video’

Having built a reputation over the last few years across London for his dazzling, energy-filled live shows (with support slots for bands such as HMLTD and Black Midi), artist and producer Show Boy has recently changed his set-up from a full band to a duo, creating inspired soundscapes filled with loops and innovative layers. And now, following his exquisite last single ‘Heart Is An Apple’, which received acclaim from the likes of Tom Robinson and BBC Introducing, he’s shared a brand new single, showcasing his new sound perfectly. 

Taken from his upcoming Surreal EP, which depicts a collapsing relationship in the age of social media, ‘Video’ looks at these ideas through the prism of endlessly repeating film footage. Propelled by throbbing beats and a whirring danceable energy, alongside Jovis’ soaring vocals, it’s an instantly catchy, sparkling alt-pop gem that demands multiple listens.

LISTEN: Rozi Plain – ‘Swing Shut’

Picked right from her latest release What A Boost, Rozi Plain’s ‘Swing Shut’ sets the tempo for the new album as a chiming, musically sophisticated record. Combining flowing melodic vocals with new-school jazz brings about a beautifully peaceful tune that would go perfectly alongside a summer day’s stroll.

Prompting the listener to reflect more on life and the importance of looking to the future, rather than reminiscing about things gone past, ‘Swing Shut’ juxtaposes sombre lyrics alongside a lilting instrumental to really pack a punch with its meaning.

Rozi Plain explains that the new album draws on homely roots while focusing on a life on the road, and how undoubtedly beautiful existence can be. Plain expands: “I feel like you do a lot of looking back, looking forward, looking at your life, and looking out of the window.“
