LISTEN: The Orielles – ‘Blue Suitcase (Disco Wrist)’

Having wowed crowds at festivals such as Green Man and Truck last year, and sold out venues including The Lexington, we couldn’t have been more excited to hear about the release of The Orielles‘ debut album next month.

Taken from the album is new single ‘Blue Suitcase (Disco Wrist)’. Inspired by the experience of spending time in the studio over the summer, the lyrics tell a profound story of spotting an unaccompanied case on a train platform and the discussions that followed. Filled with joyous, jangly hooks and woozy, sunny harmonies, the track oozes the band’s trademark dreamy, psych-filled scuzz alongside added funk-filled beats and an uptempo retro groove.

Another wonderfully infectious sonic delight from our most favourite young trio.

Silver Dollar Moment, the upcoming debut album from The Orielles, is out 16th February via Heavenly Recordings.

LISTEN: Gold Baby – ‘Duppy’

We fell in love with new favourites East London’s Gold Baby (featuring members of Long Teeth, Three Girl Rhumba, Siân Alex) last month upon hearing their sunny debut single ‘Feed It!’, and now they’re back to charm our ears with a brand new track.

More mellow and down-tempo in sound than ‘Feed It!’, ‘Duppy’ is a delicate, emotion-strewn offering with shades of early noughties alt-rock. Flowing with lush, swooping vocals and catchy, jangly hooks, it showcases Gold Baby’s ability to create twinkling slices of utterly infectious indie-pop.

Another solid gold effort from this new band that once again leaves our ears desperate for more.

Track Of The Day: Bamboo Smoke – ‘Sleepless’

A smooth, effortlessly produced electronic lullaby, Bamboo Smoke have shared their latest single ‘Sleepless’. Formed of lyricist & vocalist Lou and instrumentalist & producer Tom, the duo create hazy soundscapes with smoky undertones and soulful vocals.

A chance meeting on a rooftop brought Bamboo Smoke together at a time when Lou had armfuls of notebooks filled with words and melodies and Tom had a library of instrumentals desperate for the right voice. The duo have since spent months writing together in South London, riding trains, scrawling lyrics and bouncing phone recordings back and forth.

The band’s debut EP is a collection of songs written over the course of the last year, during sessions snatched from the temporal demands of life in London in your 20s jobs, blending the playful with the shadows, capturing fragments of dreams.

LISTEN: PRVNA – ‘Homework’

‘Homework’ is the debut single from South London solo artist PRVNA. As ethereal, soulful vocals ease us into the R&B slow-jam inspired track, the gently layered backing vocals create a multi-dimensional feel, with previously unnoticed details picked up with each listen.

An ode to a life lesson which many listeners would no doubt be able to relate to, ‘Homework’ is a tale of opening up our hearts too soon in a relationship and exposing our vulnerabilities, only to end up being hurt. PRVNA conveys her message through many elements of her track, including lyrics which could be advice given to us from our older sisters: “… you’ve done it again / you’ve opened up to the wrong man / and how is he meant to know your worth / when you never let him do the homework?”.

‘Homework’ hints to us that PRVNA is willing to expose her vulnerabilities for her craft, singing with a frank realness to uplift others in a show of sisterly solidarity. So, if that is what you need in your life right now, make yourself a hot chocolate and press play.

‘Homework’, the debut single from PRVNA, is out now on Apple Music and Spotify.
