Track Of The Day: Gazel – ‘The Night Concierge’

Gazel closes the final chapter to her debut album Gazel’s Book of Souls with the delightfully eerie video to accompany her single, ‘The Night Concierge’.

Stepping into the lobby of a seemingly deserted hotel, we meet not only the Night Concierge in question, but also the various characters which he morphs into. This tableau of life, created by the incredible acting talent of Jared Morgan, invites us to observe the unravelling action as the characters busy themselves with their own day to day activities. Gazel herself steps through the shadows, contributing to the mystery as the unseen but omniscient narrator. 

‘The Night Concierge’ beautifully concludes the narrative of Gazel’s Book of Souls, a bold debut which masterfully blends philosophical theories with electro-beats and mystical melodies. As we rapidly rewind and fast-forward through the abandoned hotel, seemingly caught in the Twilight Zone, we can only begin to imagine what tales of wonder that Gazel will conjure up next for us.

Track Of The Day: Bugeye – ‘Don’t Stop’

London based four-piece Bugeye create forward-thinking, danceable punk. Their new single ‘Don’t Stop’ comes alongside the news that the band will be releasing their debut album later this year on independent record label, Reckless Yes.  

Angela Martin’s Sleater Kinney-esque vocals and driving guitar team up with Grace Healy’s ’90s style synth lines in perfect harmony. ‘Don’t Stop’ is a riotously catchy number that will certainly make you want to dance, even if it is centred around the perils of drinking to excess.

Of the single, the band have explained: “’Don’t Stop’ is about alcohol abuse and the cyclical state that goes hand in hand with this. It’s a downward spiral of fuck ups and promises that tomorrow will be different. It’s about the denial of even having a problem in the first place and the pressure that society and the media put on us to ‘Don’t Stop’”

Having originally formed in the late ’90s, news of Bugeye’s debut album is a welcome development for fans and we certainly can’t wait to hear where their sound is headed. A steady stream of solid singles in recent years have already cemented their position as key players in the Riot Grrrl scene and we’re sure that this is a reputation that’s set to grow. PREMIERE: Lewin – ‘Sorrow’

Ahead of the release of her upcoming debut album, songwriter and musician Jara Holdert, aka Lewin, has now shared her poignant new single.

Written while she was still in a relationship with her muse and producer Aaron Ahrends, ‘Sorrow’ imagines how her love might leave her. Filled with shimmering melodies and the impassioned rich tone of Holdert’s soaring vocals, it oozes a heartfelt delicate emotion, resulting in a truly stirring and thought-provoking slice of melancholic alt-folk, with shades of the blissful allure of Laura Marling.

Adding an immense poignancy, ironically a year after writing the song, the song’s prophecy seemed to come true; Ahrends moved away to Berlin without warning, thus ending their relationship and leaving Holdert heartbroken.

Releasing ‘Sorrow’, Lewin has shared a live rendition capturing the raw energy of her performance, ironically recorded by Ahrends who stopped filming before the end of the song, and so the video then switches to moving footage of the landscape seen on a train journey to Berlin.

Track Of The Day: Girl Ray – ‘Friend Like That’

Following the recent release of their second album Girl, and having charmed us on more than one occasion with their joy-filled live show, North London’s Girl Ray have now shared a new video for album track ‘Friend Like That’.

An ode to friendship, ‘Friend Like That’ flows with the trio’s colourful energy as jangly syncopated beats flow alongside the distinctive soothing allure of Poppy Hankin’s vocals and funk-filled pop-inspired hooks. Filled with a vibrant calypso-tinged zest, it’s a dreamily uplifting offering showcasing the band’s shimmering, sunny charm and their inspired matured sound. Of the track, the band explain:

“This is a friendship anthem. Reminds us of a really smashing high five with great contact. In music, friend love is often overshadowed by romantic love and IT’S JUST WRONG. This one goes out to the mates of the world.”

Filmed in their old school in Muswell Hill, the accompanying video depicts an ’80s themed/Carrie-inspired tale of female friendship in the face of the mean popular kids, and showcases the band’s endearing wit (and significant acting skills!).
