WATCH: Table Scraps – ‘I’m A Failure’

With acclaim from the likes of Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne and IDLES’ Joe Talbot, Birmingham’s Table Scraps featured as one of our ‘Ones To Watch’ in 2018, and they’re certainly proving themselves worthy of the title. Following the dark and gritty garage-punk of tracks such as ‘My Obsession and ‘Sick Of Me’, and the recent release of their debut album, the trio are back with a riotous new single.

Fuelled by the band’s trademark ferocious force and an infectious scuzzy energy, ‘I’m A Failure’ blasts out whirring riffs alongside the raw, impassioned vocals of Poppy Twist. Accompanied by a brand new tongue-in-cheek video, it’s another perfect slice of raging, empowered grunge-fuelled rock from our favourite Brummies.

Of the inspiration behind the new visuals, TJ from the band explains:

“Making videos without any budget is more fun. We took some cheap wood and socks and made this Beavis and Butt-Head inspired love letter to the golden era of MTV – excess, big budgets, channel hopping and boredom. Sock puppets and explosions were always meant to be together!”

WATCH: Alice Bag – ’77’

If you need something inspiring to motivate you during these ridiculously cold, and depressingly dark, times, then look no further. Punk legend Alice Bag has brought together a dream team if ever there was one – Riot Grrrl queens Kathleen Hanna and Allison Wolfe, plus an appearance from Shirley Manson – to bring us the perfect angst-driven anthem.

Much like Dolly Parton’s 1980 proto-feminist workplace comedy ‘9 to 5′, ’77’ comments on the gender pay gap that still plagues society nearly forty years after the country star’s film theme-song. With a fantastically tongue-in-cheek video that sees Hanna, Wolfe and Bag each fake typing in coloured wigs, the women not only rage that “I make 77 cents and it’s not right / It’s bad for women!”, but make the point that “it’s worse if you’re not white” and insist that “it’s time for change…”

Filled with seething, punk-driven riffs, ’77’ is an empowering, inspiring call to arms to unite against the patriarchy and make the changes needed for equality, in the workplace and beyond. As Bag poignantly sneers “… don’t pretend that we’re paid equal… You wrote the script / But I’m writing the sequel.”

Video Premiere: MALMØ – ‘We Come From The Stars’

Following the success of her last single ‘You’, Danish artist Maria Malmø and her band – aka MALMØ – have now shared another captivating offering from their upcoming debut album.

The title track from the album, ‘We Come From The Stars’ is an exquisite, twinkling slice of alt-pop, showcasing everything there is to love about MALMØ. Flowing with Maria’s soulful, rich vocals, delicate, shimmering melodies and a sweeping ethereal splendour, it’s an utterly dreamy creation, oozing a resplendent, other-worldly magic.

Of the inspiration behind the track, Maria explains:

“We’re nature all the way through – although we often forget it because of all the layers and things we surround ourselves with. It gives me great peace and a sense of purpose to think that we actually consist of stardust: Nitrogen in our brains, chalk in our bones, iron in our veins, and carbon in our souls.”

WATCH: Amaroun – ‘Made A Fire’

Following support for her debut single ‘Bed Bugs’ from the likes of Clash, BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins, Amaroun returns to grace our ears with another captivating offering.

Flowing with the soaring, rich vocals of Jay Brown, ‘Made A Fire’ is filled with catchy, twinkling hooks and a subtle emotion-strewn power that’ll cast you under its spell on first listen. Oozing an effervescent ethereal haze and soulful splendour, it’s an instantly uplifting, and totally dreamy, sonic delight.

Of the track, Brown explains:

“The song was written in a heightened state, in the aftermath of my coming out… I’ve found clarity in the thrill of meeting someone new. When you find that person and there’s this instant connection you can’t deny, it’s something that’s hard to describe. This song is simply gratitude in musical form for that person and that feeling.”
